Grew up with springers, have Boykin’s now but been eyeing English working cockers. Feeling like I lucked out with the balance of a Boykin - big dog in a fun sized format - but those field bred cockers you see in the UK are simply beautiful dogs with tremendous personality and drive.

Great video Charlie, Waffles coming on nice , and a steady dog. My cocker dog is 14 months old now and trainings going well, but he is a twin turbo type, head strong cocker. He does as he's told but everything's flat out ! I'm trying to keep his training as slow and calm as possible, will he calm down with age ??

Hey Mr Mordor, & Waffle?/Wawfull? I was very pleased to see you come up on my feed again. Great video. Top Notch.I've seen a few of yours but not for ages. Great to see you with & teaching your son. I met someone recently, (within last 18 months) who had a Yellow Lab (Fox Red) I thought it was one of yours just watching her move. I asked the woman if she was from your kennel, & now I can't remember if she said, "Yes, n my God he'd (you) be embarrassed if he seen her" or...., "No my God, couldn't have afforded one from him." I lean to the former because they waited 2 years for her, & despite the lack of forethought (full time work, 2 small kids) & training on their part, their dog was amazing. She was programmed to work, & loved, & happily working the job she n her head. I'm so glad I found your channel again, I've a working cocker spaniel myself. She firstly belonged to a good friend of mine. I've known her all her life. She lives her now, came to us full time a few weeks after her 7th birthday, She'll turn 11 this September. I'm off to watch more of your videos.

Hi Charlie, just wanted to leave a small comment, great video as always. I've found your content really useful in training my Doberman (around 1 year old now,) who is similar in age (helpfully!) to Waffle. Few things for context: 1) I've always been really careful to maintain a clear distinction between my commands for recall. I use "with me" for a general directional, 'come this way' type command to re-focus my dog back toward me. I then use "come" for a 'come and stand next to me' command (close enough to get back on the slip lead) and finally "in" for back on leash. I also use "me" for 'look at me' prior to releasing him from the leash "off we go!" or going into / leaving the house.. whilst in a sit of course. 2) My dog became very reliable off-lead and is very attentive to me when when walking.. I think using some of your suggested 'dynamism' running away when on walks, loudly shouting"bye" (which walks great as an emergency recall btw...) has really helped with this. He also doesn't really tend to venture more than 20m from me and will generally stay within 5 or so metres of me when walking off lead. Now I recently have felt that my dog has become a little less responsive to recall commands. I'd initially blamed this on him being around the dreaded 'teenage' age for a Doberman. After watching this video and reflecting I think I'd actually become a bit boring in my recall commands (partly because my dog had become so good and reliable with his recall) and made the whole thing rather predictable i.e "come" suddently meant that something had gone wrong or there was potential danger (i.e potential excitement and adventure to my dog) and "in" meant that the walk was over or we were going somewhere less exciting. I've done a walk this evening and have done a bit of an experiment to test my above reflections - in terms of the test I have begun using my 'recall' commands when there isn't any issue or event that means I need the dog to come back. I was quite blown away by how apparent it was that my dog did indeed read "come" as meaning something was happening - I noticed him looking around and checking before coming back, even on one occasion poking his head around the corner of some bushes to see what I might have seen that had led to him coming back - I also decided to bin the "in" command for the walk, instead using "come" and offering the lead ("in" came about because when offered the lead, he will come running and put his head through it...) which has the same effect. This also removed the issue of him knowing "in" meant the walk was over and having a (perceived as teenage) strop of running around before doing as asked. Thanks for the help!

It has been on my mind for years now the exact things you say about labs, in general. I had labs 20 yrs ago for rough shooting in Ireland and while they weren’t as leggy as your sample puppy . The older hunting labs seemed more sleek and balanced as opposed the the box headed barrels we seem to see now. Yours included if you don’t mind me saying. If they can clear a five bar gate…..well.😂. I do have a guestion for you as you seem to train a lot of good gun dogs…do you or anyone train the sleek flat coated retrievers?…..they seem to have the perfect form to be a great all day gun dog. Yet I never see any….

Sadly puppy class would not take a dog unless it was on a harness. Upwards struggle to get Billy used to a slip lead wasn’t easy. Getting there though. He gets frustrated with the lead now and it becomes a huge game.

In the US, speed is really important to winning field trials, so our working Labs tend to look a lot more like the second dog in this video. A lighter, more athletic dog is also much nicer if you hunt out of a canoe or other small watercraft.

Some of these comments.. The man is giving an opinion based on his experience, not advice to throw yours away. If a harness works for some dogs and some people that’s great, but there is no denying harnesses put your dog physically in a better position to pull. As for harnesses being the safer or more comfortable option, that depends very much on the type of harness and dog.

Pansy is like a big koala and looks so happy 😃. I started recall training with our 10 month old girl six weeks ago. She’s a rescue and needs to be treated like a know-nothing puppy. I’m very much reminded of the patience, repetition and baby steps it takes. Even the grass is a distraction 🙈.

You're talking BullShit m8. Most dogs pull less from the first second they have a harness on. I do volunteers work at a dog rescue center , i walked alot of dif dogs and my experiences tell me you're bullshitting. . . . .i just wander why you're doing this is there an alternative motive you not telling us.

This is pure ignorance- dogs safety, wellbeing and comfort are the most important things and a correctly fitting harness is the safest and most comfortable option for walking (with a collar for ID tags while out). Training your dog to walk to heel correctly and behave appropriately in public is perfectly simple with only positive reinforcement, you don’t need to put your dog in a position to make them uncomfortable to learn that’s very outdated. Collars aren’t an appropriate thing for an untrained dog to be wearing in public regardless, they can be slipped off and a dog with shaky recall is a danger to themself and others. I suggest educating yourself before trying to teach others.

You suggest the guy who's been training dogs for decades "educate himself"? You've clearly never actually watched his content if you think he's uneducated. You sure make a lot of inferences from a 30 second clip to be calling others ignorant.
@Lily-ok9lp
@Lily-ok9lp 15 сағат бұрын
@@hinney827 Yes, people with experience still need education because like any profession times change and new information becomes available. I scanned his page after the comment and it reassured me the comment was correct, a lot of old school country folk aren’t known for exceptional animal husbandry- I grew up around people like that and im pretty sure he’s aware he is spreading outdated information and would think im ‘just being soft’. Decades ago things that were completely acceptable are now deemed dangerous and ridiculous- not keeping up with updated standards does make you ignorant as a professional and it’s strange to be defending him.

Depends on the harness of course! There are “no pull” harnesses and harnesses meant for pulling and tracking. Just research your harness and choose the right kind.

I had exactly the opposite experience. My collie cross staff pulled like a locomotive on any lead, but as soon as I got him a harness, he settled down, and seemed to read my little direction through the lead more and respond better. Also, it stopped him choking himself as there was no throat pulling possible anymore.
