I sold my 2009 Jetta TDI with over 170K miles on it and it was still running strong and everything worked perfectly on the car when I sold it. I purchased my second TDI this past December (2019), which is a 2014 Passat TDI SEL. All black with a titan black interior. It had 37K miles when I picked it up and the VW emissions service was performed on November 2019 so I have most of the extended warranty still in place. I picked up the car from LA Auto Auction in West Covina, CA for $11,200 out the door - tax and title included - which in my opinion is the deal of the century for a car of this caliber and with such low mileage (I was able to beat them up a little and got them to reduce the price $500 and I refused to pay their $1000 dealer fees, which they reluctantly agreed to). It was a one owner car with service performed every 10K miles. It had one accident reported with rear end damage and no airbag deployment. The previous owner had it fixed and it's a clean title car. All the pannel lines are perfect and there is no visible evidence of any damage to the car. In fact, there isn't a single scratch on this car which is awesome. The only damage was curb rash on both right side wheels which I had fixed for less than $200. I had the 40,000 mile service performed, which included the DSG service, fuel filter change and a bunch of other stuff, but fortunately the car already had an oil change performed and it didn't require much DEF because the car was serviced when I bought it. The service ended up costing less than $500 which surprised me because they estimated over $750. I'm sure I could have had it serviced for less, but I went with the convenience of having it done at my local dealership, which I have a lot of history with. I'm a TDI fan boy and I am disappointed with the EPA because now VW has raised their middle finger to the USA and said "no more TDI's for you", while the rest of the world gets to enjoy them. TDI vehicles have a bad reputation now while there are still millions of giant SUV's out rolling around that put out a much, much larger carbon footprint on our planet.

Note of warning: I just bought one of these certified pre owned at a vw dealership......lots of the accessories were missing (floor mats, spare tire package had to be replaced,truck cover) basically stuff that was not bolted in the car. The dealership was able to take these from other TDI on the lot and make it work however just keep an eye out. After 2 years in a parking lot and numerous people moving them around things seemed to dissapear....

That is true. I have seen the same thing. I would say it's more common that the owner who turned in the car stripped it down than someone walking off with it. I think the bigger issue is that a lot of the tdis have a lot of body damage from all of the transporters and people who haven't cared about the car. A lot of people thought they were all going to be destroyed.

I had a 2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI for less than 1 1/2 years, and had 10 major issues with it. Its positives won me over, and I continue to miss the car. However, its negatives and the headaches they cause don't make it worth buying.

I had the following issues. 1. Factory radio died and I bought an aftermarket radio and had it installed. VW wanted $1,500 for a new OEM radio. 2. Intercooler replacement 3. Intake manifold replacement. Luckily both of those were under the TDI warranty. 4. The base of the rear coil springs literally rusted causing the car to sag slowly but surely. 5. Sunroof creaked alot when it did work somewhat properly. Got stuck open a few times. 6. Needed a new blower motor for heat & AC. $225 ish from my independent mechanic, my local VW dealer wanted like $475 for that.... 7. (Minor and covered under warranty) but no joke, go to leave the dealership parking lot after the intake manifold replacement I believe, and check engine light was still on.... A glow plug needed replacing... 8. Driver mirror cap turn signal failure. 9. Fuse box melted causing multiple electrical issues, but was told that that the mirror cap turn signal wasn't failing due to the fuse box melting.... Anyways. The fuel economy was nice when I was driving an hour to and from work. Spent about $260 a month on fuel vs over $400 with my car prior to the TDI Sportwagen.

@@spottedeuros1529 I got an an awesome aftermarket radio with Android auto installed into it for like $450. I traded the VW in for a 2019 Corolla. I continue to miss the VW's positive attributes terribly, but the Corolla already paid off itself in peace of mind and of course no matinence costs yet. Aside from the electrical issues, I needed new tires and an oil change. I would've been out easily 2-4k in tires and an unknown repair cost for electrical issues.... I've heard older TDIs are more reliable and don't have expensive DPFs to worry about. But man..... I know its "Just a car" but that TDI was everything I wanted in a car...... ☹

First issue or worst issue with an Mk6 or Mk7 TDI is emissions warranty DPF gets clogged causing tons of headaches! Secondly, the issues keeps coming back even after warranty covers emissions test! Thirdly, once the warranty emission expires DPF continues to get clogged….they don’t do well in short city drive😢! No one talks about this main issue aside from the diesel pump going out but that’s another story for a second video.

There are plenty of Mk4 Tdis with tons of miles. I don’t have a ton of experience with them. I’d watch out for the automatic. Probably the weak point to the car. The mk4 TDI has the most popular and bulletproof diesel engine VW has ever produced (ALH), and as Spotted Euro states, stay away from the automatics. Mk4 TDIs are much better than mk5 and 6 IMO. As long as the seller has maintenance records, 276k miles is a non-issue.

Big as in HUGE thing to look for on 2.0 TDI VW (aside from DSG service) are issues with the oil cooler/heater core. My 2014 Passat TDI SE loved heater cores every 40,000 miles. I recently bought a 2013 VW Jetta SportWagon TDI 6 speed manual. The EPA negotiated warranty extension on it is 10-1/2 years from its original in service date, or 4-1/2 years from the date of the emissions correction, whichever is the greatest. The manual transmission gets an extra 1/2 year for some reason (I’m not complaining!). With my VW the warranty is extended until November 18th, 2023, based on its original in service date, which is about 6 months longer than the 4-1/2 years from the emissions correction would’ve been.

Jøsh Dun and Tyler Jøseph exactly, but it seems to be normal because another one I actually bought is the same way. The thing that bothers me know is the way it kind of lunges when you are trying to idle and take your foot off the brake.
@allanj7750
@allanj7750 4 жыл бұрын
Chad R Van Drunen this happens because of the way the DSG transmission is designed. It’s not an automatic transmission. Well it is. But it’s not a conventional type. It’s basically two manual transmission clutch assembly’s side by side. One clutch handles the even gears and one for the odd gears. A lot of the same principles apply when driving this car as you would in a manual transmission. You don’t want to creep, as it’s bad for the clutch in a manual it’s bad for the clutch on a DSG. When you let go of the brake from a dead stop you have to wait for the clutch to fully engage to 1st gear before you can accelerate. That’s what the “jolt” you guys are talking about is. If you let of go the break and immediately floor the gas, you’ll feel the slipping of the clutch right away. Horrible for the DSG transmission, so avoid doing that, again remember, let go of break, feel clutch engage, then accelerate. I’d recommend watching a full video explaining the DSG transmission, once you understand the way it works, you can get way more life out of it by avoiding bad habits you get used to in an auto, and you’ll be able to improve your overall driving experience. I thought the car shifted odd and didn’t always pick the right gear when I first bought my 14 Passat TDI, now that I understand how it works I find myself constantly driving in triptronic, I’ve never used triptronic on an auto until the DSG. It actually feels right to drive it that way. It shifts soooo smooth, as long as it’s preselected the correct gear. Love my DSG TDI

I’m looking at a 2013 Passat sel premium with about 50,000 miles on it. Everything seemed ok but looking at the engine I noticed the shaking while it was running. Nothing serious but enough to notice right away. Is this normal?? I watched the part of your vid wher you show the engine running but couldn’t see anything unless camera didn’t pick it up
@spottedeuros1529
@spottedeuros1529 4 жыл бұрын
The diesel engine will vibrate more than a gas engine. It shouldn't be too much though. It may need new motor mounts if the engine is shaking a lot. With 50,000 miles it would be weird to need motor mounts. These cars have been sitting for a while though so that can effect things.

If you had to rank all the tdis how would you rank them. Also is it better to get the jetta sportwagen or the golf sportwagen
@spottedeuros1529
@spottedeuros1529 3 жыл бұрын
I would probably just rank them by age. I think the 2015 golf or golf wagon are the best TDIs you can find. I had one. They seem to get the best mpg and they look the best in my opinion. The also are MK7s so they are the most up to date. The 2015 Jetta feels more basic inside. I think it’s considered a mk6 facelift. I like the Jetta Sportwagen too but they don’t look as good. Really I think it’s be cool to get an Audi A6 TDI. That has the V6 TDI engine. Same as the Touareg I own. Or even the Audi A8 TDI. My Touareg has 208k miles. It’s be cool to actually have a reliable German sedan.

have a 13 golf manual, have had dpf issues due to it being put together wrong after hitting a raccoon, as miles go up the car feels worse and worse. I do regular maintenance and the car just seems to be falling apart. Got the P2015 light come on and go away and its been a ticking time bomb of a car. Selling it and going Toyota.

Your thoughts on buying 2015 CPO from a dealer ? 2015 CPO Passat TDI SEL 17K miles dealer asking $17K... any help would be great
@spottedeuros1529
@spottedeuros1529 4 жыл бұрын
Price seems a little high but honestly there aren't a lot of comparable because the miles are so low. The game at a big dealership is how much they charge for everything else. Sales price is one line on the purchase agreement. The Passat body style changed in 2016. 2015 is the oldest year Tdi you can find before they stopped production. There are benefits to having a late model year of a body style but a 2015 will be the exact same as a 2012. You could save some cash and find a low mileage 2012-2013 Passat and get the same car. CPO is nice. Extra warranty but if you put a lot of miles on the car quick you can easily blow through the CPO window.

Congrats! I always prefer the DSG over a manual in a Tdi. The DSG is great. They have been using the transmission for a while. People say you just need to do a service every 40k and it will last. I have bought plenty of Tdi DSGs at the auction and not a single one had transmission problems.
