A few other items I would like to add to the list are: Kolapuri Juttis, Jhumkas for girls - they are very unique in Canada and will fetch you a lot of compliments by white people if you are into them. Also, any Indian decorative art for your home walls or ethnic paintings since you will not find it in Canada. These small household ornaments can easily be found at great prices at Janpath or Lajpat Nagar market in Delhi. Additionally, when I was travelling to Canada 3 years ago as a student, I carried some ready-made food packets by Haldirams such Dal Makhni, Chole, Kadi Pakoda, Shahi Paneer, etc. I found them extremely useful as it was difficult for me to cook elaborately in my beginning days and I did not want to eat sandwiches all the time.

Try checking value village for bedsheets. They have all kinds of varieties and with beautiful colour prints - even better than India. You can always wash the bedsheets thoroughly before using them. But for a newcomer I think carrying bedsheets might add extra weight in their luggage which is may not be a very conducive option.
