What to Plant in September | Starting Seeds to Get Your Fall Garden Ready for Success

Prepping your garden for the next season? We've got you covered, especially for gardeners in zones 9 and 10.
Days are getting shorter, temperatures are getting cooler, and the smell of pumpkin spice lattes is in the air. That means it's time to plan out your cool season crops and get some seeds in soil. Depending on where you are, you may need to start these a little earlier or later than here in San Diego, but this is still a good rule of thumb for all gardeners.

If you love cole crops (Cruciferous vegetables or Brassica plants), then this is YOUR TIME. Don't wait until the cool weather has already hit to plant your fall crops. If you have a greenhouse like we do, consider starting your seeds in a cooler environment.
We start just about all of our plants in starter packs and trays. There are a few exceptions, including root plants like carrots and beets. Trays allow us to keep a close eye on the conditions, and we do take some precautionary steps for root veggies such as a row cover and a piece of cardboard.
Seeds don't need the sun to germinate. Once they have germinated, though, and break the surface of the soil, you need to give them some sunlight or use a grow light if starting indoors. For us, this means we're moving our seed trays (which we keep moist but not soaked!) around throughout the day. This is also the right time to thin your plants before seedlings fight over nutrients too much.
