Enjoy your videos. A quick tip: try increasing your camera exposure and ISO to make the footage bright and shiny. Bumping up the exposure compensation would do the trick.

Perfect timing for this video! My seeds have been germinating the past few days and I'm right at that point where I need to start feeding them. This has been my most successful round of seedlings because I soaked my 6 packs for 24 hours to make sure they were Not going to dry out on me right away. I've been so afraid of dampening off that I think I've actually been underwatering. Where do you draw the line risking dampening off?

That is a good point I learned this year. I direct sowed seeds for a winter garden (Michigan). it took a tremendous amount of water for two large 4 x 8‘ raised beds to keep those seeds moist enough to germinate. Then germination was spotty at best. So I will definitely start the seeds in trays from here on out. I have not had real success in direct selling anything really. So I’m gonna give that technique up and just start everything in trays lol. Love that shirt you’re wearing that’s pretty cool.

I'm so glad I found your channel! It is still stinking hot here in houston area but I started seeds inside and also outside in greenstalk. Today I also started Beets direct in garden since you are right if I keep waiting for things to cool off, I will miss the season. My seedlings are pretty puny but only a week old. Patience is not my strongest suit...lol. PS. groovy shorts!!

Carrots, beets, lettuce, Box Choy, Peas, Kale etc, lots of herbs too ...I started gardening by dabbling in containers 2 years ago, this is my first year with 4 raised beds and two green stalks! Im so excited! But darn, the garlic I wanted sold out. I wish I found you earlier! But there's a store close by Vista that carries your seeds YAY!

Love your videos! I wish I could send you photos of my garden set-up because this is the first year I started to grow food and nearly everything I’ve learned is from you! I got a tomahook setup and shade cloth & fish fertilizer & I got it all. Two questions: 1) Can you do a video of your favorite products/accessories? Are your bootstrap farmer bottom watering trays the regular ones or the shallow ones? Their website recommends to buy the shallow ones for their seed starting trays but it looks like you’re using the deeper ones and it still works fine! 2) Can you make a video on broccoli? My broccoli leaves have so many holes on them and also started having white spots and I’m not sure what’s going on. I’ve sprayed with neem and used sluggo when I transplanted them out but they seem to be struggling. Thank you!

Can you explain watering. When to switch from bottom and overhead to just bottom? I seem to drown mine a lot.

Bottom is easy because it allows the soil to absorb moisture as needed. I like to overhead water with the sprayer very gently just to give them a little extra. Soil doesn't ever need to be soaked.

Can I pass along a sweet pea trick I was told in the 1960s? On a east facing wall, dig a trench. Sow the sweet peas early, as you did. As they come up, keep adding soil until trench is nearly full. With this method, you can have a bouquet of flowers at Christmas. I must admit, I haven't tried it. I've never heard that peas can have soil added to them like solanace crops. Perhaps my memory details not 100%. But I'm certain I saw the bouquets every Christmas Eve from the garden.

I'm having the opposite weather problem in NYC (which actually has a subtropical climate). For almost 2 decades now we have had warm Septembers perfect for fall seed starting. However, fall has come early more than 2 weeks ago (I'm talking October temps), and the last week has been nonstop cold rain and temps below 50F at night. Any tips on what to do now with my too small seedlings ☹️?

Brr! Are they in trays? You can bring them inside or use a greenhouse (makeshift if needed). Just make sure they still get plenty of light

That would be the logical assumption given the theme of this video! 😂 No: I've already planted them, but they aren't doing well; still very small given the few weeks they've been in pots (balcony gardening). I am thinking of at least covering them to protect them from the night cold, and when there are consecutive days of rain in the forecast. But otherwise, not sure. Thanks again!

Thank you! But question, I keep hearing you can’t leave them sitting in the trays of water after they suck up the water or the roots will rot? How do you balance between not letting them dry out and die but also not letting them soak in water, rot & die? Watering schedule is the trickiest part for me! Going into my 2nd fall garden ever but I keep messing up most of my seed babies 😓

You want the soil to be moist but not soaked. You'll usually end up watering 2-3 times per week probably depending on the conditions.

My chickens 🐓 eaten all of my brassica seedlings, they were ready to go in the garden. A month of work and they destroyed it in a day, zone 9b northern Ca. Can I still start more seeds and grow them trough winter, or should I wait until early January? I might used row covers to help with the super cold nights.

I'm in Riverside County, CA. I'm still starting things. Day length is the greatest factor for why we plant mid Sept for ideal crops. Plants tend to slow growth about mid Nov to mid Feb here. If you want greens, the goal is to have much of your 2 month needs grown by the end of Oct. Harvest as needed during Winter.. So. If you're starting late, just realize you're adding up to 60 days to harvest if they're not ready by Nov. Or, use grow lights indoors. You can keep the lights on longer, simulating Spring days. Just gotta do some math to calculate the best planting dates, whether you choose now or in early 2023. I've used cheap aquarium lights for getting a few weeks early growth before Spring planting. However, the plants can get leggy if left too long under the bargain lights. I can't afford the proper grow lights, but I'll take the benefit of an early 2 to 4 weeks growth.

Yes, Sj got it right. You can definitely still plant. In fact, I would encourage you to start seeds every 2-3 weeks depending on what you eat so you can succession plant.

Seaweed is great for sustainability, but its NPK numbers are a little low sometimes (depending on the brand, etc.). They're usually around 1-0-4.
