There are plenty of things to do in Rome. Tired of the traffic, tourists and chaos? Go take peaceful walk in the forest in Ostia, aka the Pineta di Ostia ! If you've seen enough in Rome then why not think about day trips from Rome? I always enjoy going to the Pineta for the peace, quiet, fresh air and to not feel like I am in Rome.

Well it’s definitely out of the way if you live in the center of Rome or anywhere within the GRA.

Hard to believe that somewhere so tranquil could be less than an hour from central Rome. Yet another destination in Italy on my bucket list. Thanks again.

Very nice. Looks like a great place to escape from the noises in the city. Ostia was the setting of a Netflix series about Rome. Blood of Rome. Great series. Hope all is well.

Looks like such a peaceful place! Such gorgeous sunsets at the beach. A while back my adult kids encouraged me to start filming in Sicily. I have a lot of videos planned, but I have published my first one on The Carini Diaries. I enjoy your videos and like how friendly and approachable you are. You've been an inspiration. Thanks.

Thanks ~ we'd love to get to Rome. We've had a lot of family here from the U.S. so the fall is slipping past us. Is winter a no-go for visiting Rome?

No, not at all. There are lots of things to do in winter as Italy does Xmas decorations. Granted it's not summer, it gets chilly and rainy but not all day.

Nice. Never made it down to Ostia, but would like to see the ruins there. I did Villa Doria Pamphili early this morning for the first time. Also pretty quiet compared to other places. Felt guilty since I was the only one who was not jogging.

Hey David! Sorry this is off topic.. I just found your channel. We have some cool things in common. I'm Italian American from New England. My family comes from Castellamare and Pompeii. I have always been a language nerd. Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French... After getting pretty good in Italian, I thought my grandparents would be so happy to speak with me in Italian. I started talking to them and they said some crazy stuff and said they couldn't talk to me in Italian. They are second generation. Recently, I started to study Neapolitan by teaching myself. I started getting the ear for it and putting together simple conversations I could have. After about a week of doing that here and there, my grandparents were at a family party and the look on their faces when they saw that I could talk to them and understand them was like nothing else. I felt more connected to my family. At first, napulitano sounded alien. Now, I can see with a bit of practice and being able to speak other languages, that it is totally doable. How long did it take you from learning Italian to napulitano, and can you recommend some good sources for someone like me to learn quickly? You have a great channel! Thank you for your help and wish you all the best! Ciao!

Hello! Wow that’s an interesting story! My grandparents also grew up speaking a Campania dialect (offshoot of napoletano) and for them it was another language. But as I’ve seen, even those who prefer and speak dialect always understand the standard Italian language. Granted I suppose that Italian-Americans who never had much exposure to the standard language might find it strange. I really can’t say how long it took me to be familiar with napoletano and it was a gradual process over the years. The real teacher however and this should come as no surprise, was LIVING in Napoli and Salerno. It’s something that you must do if you ever want to learn it properly. Outside resources are scarce in my opinion. Massimo Troisi speaks a lot of dialect in his movies although he’s hard to understand if you don’t have a good grasp on napoletano from the beginning. There are a few books on amazon but a lot of them are just dictionaries. Try and make friends with people who speak it on the internet if you can. Thanks for the compliment btw ! Where in NE are you from?

I am willing to bet that you are probably from southern Connecticut. It seems that whenever I encounter anybody from Connecticut being here in Italy or online they are always from the southern part of the state. I am from tolland. I origins are from Torre del Greco Which is right next to Pompeii.

@@DavidsDoseofItaly New Haven originally! Now I'm living in 'staven. My wife's family is from Naples and Sicily. My wife wants to learn Italian so we can go there from time to time. Maybe retire there someday. I love the language but I really won't know how it is until I get there and start communicating with people. I will probably love it! Seeing my wife practice Italian is so funny because she is so Italian looking, almost more Greek looking, but she never spoke it before. She makes it look pretty convincing lol

Eh, I guessed it! Southern CT! Northern CT people seldom get out of the woods! J/k. Hats off to your wife for making the effort; most people are too bashful to put in that much effort. My dad is the same. His origins are all Campania and he looks typical Southern Italian so when he comes to Italy people are surprised that he can't speak it that well.

Also checkout the woods near San Vittorino. The park(s) there have a dozen old bridges and pieces of aqueducts to visit. The area is covered by busses during weekdays. There are also nice hiking areas in Castelli Romani and Marcellina (North of Tivoli). Unfortunately, afaik the only way to get to those places is by car or bike. It's a lot of uphill and a few hours ride tho.

Thanks David. Have you been to Landispoli and if so, what do you think of that area? I’ve also been hearing the horror stories about the the scarcity of gas and the rising costs of utilities. How have you been dealing with that?

Hi Louis. Yes I have been there and from what I remember it’s a very nice area. In regards to the rising utility costs we’re doing OK but I fear the worst is yet to come. The only solution in my opinion is to look for other income streams. In general I think this is the only way to live decently
