About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving partner, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep chickens and Aylesbury ducks.

Hi Liz, I love your videos and would like your opinion, is it ok to plant Purple sprouting Broccoli and dwarf broad been in the same bed? I’m still trying to get my head around the companion planting malaki! I have just been told I shouldn’t grow garlic near runner beans! I’m in zone 9a by the way 😂

In the video Liz didn’t recommend a beetroot variety. For winter growing I found Pablo and Rhonda both do well under cover and don’t go hard and woody. Kale does grow well, Liz recommended red Russian, my favourite is dwarf green curled. Spinach matador does well in a polyunnel planted in a seed tray in September and then into the ground undercover in October. Tatsoi is also good over wintered and is fast growing, it is like a cross between young pak choi and a baby leaf spinach. I agree with the Amsterdam3 carrot recommendation. Eskimo is another good carrot variety.

I was curious as I've seen that there are other videos listing seeds one can plant now, but when I look at my seed packets they always scream SOW IN SPRING. But I see most are to be sown under cover, which, I guess explains it; but I don't have a massive sheet of plastic so I'll assume I'm left with the option of broad beans, peas, onions, and replanting last year's garlic. Well that's good to be going on with, thanks. I will have to get started. (I'll also have to check my seed store and hope the seeds I already have are ok with the cold, as it'd be a shame to have to dispense with them and buy more.)

Hello liz, OMG so glad to have found you. I live in South Wales and have been growing veg for a few years, although I still feel my knowledge is that of a beginner. I haven’t grown in the winter before, but I have sown cauliflower, broccoli potatoes, and hope to do carrots and perhaps peas. I don’t have a grow tunnel as it’s windy here ( near the loughor estuary) so they tend to lift in the wind and I’ve lost many a tray of seedlings. Can you advise where I can buy the hoop tubing please. I’d like to get what I’ve sown under plastic before it gets too cold. Thank you for all you do.

@@imxpragian I think sea purslane might be the variety I once grew in summer. I didn't like it much because it has very fleshy leaves and a taste that's a little off-putting for me. It still grows in summer since it really grows like a weed. Since I don't like the taste or texture, I put it into smoothies since it's very healthy (with a lot of Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals). My favorite is winter purslane, aka "miner's lettuce". It has very thin, tender leaves and a mild taste, and is just as healthy. :)

Greetings from Finland 😋 i know what u r talking about 😂 i ve come to a conclusion that its probably best to just have plenty of potatoes and other roots in the root cellar and wait for the spring! On the other hand there are solutions also, but is it really worth the effort, depends on situation 🤔 check out one yard revolution -channel, he s pretty much mastered winter growing in us zone 5b, in a non heated polytunnel. But i think the biggest challenge (according to my non succesful trials) might be the darknes in october to december (short daylight hours plus continuos overcast weather). Winter growing could be possible in a non heated greenhouse with just a little additional light, and also finding the right plant varieties that are both cold and low light tolerant. Of course this book from elliot coleman (..spelling..?), four season gardening, might be a helpful resource. I think winter gardening in scandinavia is possible.. but certainly very very challenging.

Thanks for this, I'm going to get a winter crop of carrots going in the greenhouse when the tomatoes are pulled and my garlic (and flower bulbs) arrived this week so hoping to get them planted when we get a break in the rain. I got some beetroot and spinach planted a week or two back and wasn't sure if they'd over winter so I'm glad to hear it. My tunnels are covered in insect mesh at the moment, do you think it's worth swapping to plastic or fleece during the frost? I've still got leeks and kale in there at the moment too.

Hi Liz, loved the video! What poly and bendy things are you using to make your mini poly tunnel? I need that in my life like yesterday! 😄

Nice video! Just had 3 beds open up cause our first hard frost this weekend. Ive got an absurd amount of mixed lettuce/mache an spinach plants. How hard of a frost can brassica seedlings take?

Hi, it's worth checking the individual varieties, but many are cold hardy down to -10C.

I’ve only got a balcony for a garden. Would you recommend any of these for growing in pots outside? Thanks! I love your videos!

Hi Liz, I live in South West France and so your climatic regions in the US don't mean much to me. Can you give me some idea of which US climate code equates to my region please? Love your videos!!

Chris I understand that but she gives US climate zones and I would like to have an idea which zone roughly equates to SW France. I'm sure Kent is fine but I don't think it's as warm as here 😂

Hi Liz, in your vlog of 'What to sow in October', you said below in the description you would leave details of the seeds and where to buy them from. Where is the information please? Eggsy

If you are watching on a television, I'm not sure how to access the info. If watching on a mobile phone or computer, the info is just below the video screen. Likewise I'm not sure how it works on a tablet as I don't have one and have never seen how it's laid out. But you should see a description box and then you can see a bit that says SHOW MORE, if you click on that you'll be able to see all the info.
