I find it very necessary. It shows how far anorexia goes to control a person. A scene isn't unnecessary because you don't like it and triggers you. I don't necessarily think the target audience was for people who survived anorexia. But this is just my opinion.

Great video addressing the criticism this film is facing. As someone who had anorexia in high school and still struggles with disorder eating (more than 10 years of struggling) I can't say what caused my disorder and the exact moment when I flipped the switch; I just knew that I couldn't stop. Everyone struggles with eating disorders differently, their reasons are all different... the only thing we share are the symptoms. Its disappointing that some people are making assumptions about the movie before even seeing it... just because a certain Netflix show left a bad taste. This movie is not perfect, and even though Eli's journey is different than mine, it was still relatable and a realistic view on how destructive eating disorders can be.

As you pointed out, it is based off of a real life experience, why people feel the need to cast it aside when it does not mirror their personal struggle is beyond me. They need to sit down, (be humble) shut up and watch things before they go and get offended. (Who am I kidding, even if they watched it they'd get offended because that's what they set out to do.)

As someone who has been through anorexia (to the point I was sent to an Eating Disorders Ward that was essentially a hospital-based version of the one in the show) I was SO ready to be pissed off at this movie. It came out right on the tail end of the whole 13RW fiasco, so I was pretty much done with Netflix originals. I did watch it, however, because I'm usually opposed to preaching the shittiness of something I haven't personally seen, and holy shit. I have never in my life cried so hard at a movie, because as someone who maybe never fully came to terms with what I was doing to other people, it wrecked me. It handled the topic SO well, because there were little inside nods that mostly only people going through it would understand, but it did so in a comforting way rather than a triggering way. It literally made me pick up my phone and apologize to my best friend for all the stress I'd put her through at my worst.

I think they expressed how her mom's focus on her own relationship + her father avoiding her growing up led to her loneliness. She tried to express her emotions through art which she posted on tumblr. Her drawings were so dark tho that someone took them literally and killed herself. The parents of that girl were so mad and blamed Ellen to the point of sending her pictures of their daughter's dead body which traumatized Ellen. Her ED became her obsession to get her mind off things. Pretty crazy.

Like a lot of people don't understand when it comes to mental disorders, and I don't have an eating disorder but depression and anxiety and some other disorders, is how much environment influences symptoms as well. At least from the perspective of understand depression, people do not know how to handle depressed people at all. We already know, at least the majority of us know, that our thoughts are unhealthy. We don't need more people telling us its unhealthy and think about all the people who would love and value us, because we're already thinking about all of that. It be much nicer to have someone simple listen and lend sympathy, rather than trying to make themselves feel better or feel like they helped by giving surface level advice. It ends up making someone with depression end up feeling more isolated because people shame them for the thoughts of their disorder, blame them for not trying hard enough, isolate them by giving them arbitrary advice. While it's nice to say it be nice to know the protagonist thoughts, I think it was a far smarter choice to chose how these external environments create or really exasperate symptoms in a condition.

I may not have anorexia but i suffer from depression. Watching this movie made me cry because it is so relatable to anyone with mental illness. When the professor argued that there was very little information given about the lead character, there is a reason. If you watch the therapy scene, it shows how she ends up falling through the cracks because of how her family (specifically the mothers) were only concerned about how they felt and not what she was feeling. Even so many people who are suffering from mental illness, struggle with admitting they have issues because they feel no one will listen. Please excuse the ranty vibe this was kust my thoughts

My mother does that. I have depression and anxiety... and she always likes to pretend everything is lovey-dovey. Why do you worry so much? Just ignore it, you are over thinking it. The only thing that she has made plenty clear to me is that she is not someone who can be trusted or spoken to when it comes to my mental and emotional health.

Maybe they don't meet the criteria for an eating disorder diagnosis, but they do still have some degree of mental illness. It's like if you gave a person with depression 99 compliments and 1 criticism. Their mind would focus on the criticism. Instead of focusing on the message, people focus on the thinness of Ellen and really anyone who represents what they think they should look like.

According to an interview with the director, she had an outer body experience that helped something shift inside of her. Which helped her realize that she truly needed help and was ready to go down recovery road. So that surreal scene (which did feel a little out of place in this film) was suppose to convey an outer body experience. It came off as an acid trip to me. I totally agree that they should've shown her reunion with the other characters though.
@runningohfive7 жыл бұрын

I agree with the other @Luci Skies on this, also like to add that the director herself had a long battle with an ED when she was younger I read somewhere to the point that her heart once stopped. That experience is probably what she was pulling inspiration from for the ending -as endorphins do get release right before the heart and brain stop
@brigranger21197 жыл бұрын
As someone who's had an Ed its very common to have out of body experiences as a way to distance you're self from the pain and hate. Its also easier to have these sort of hallucinations when severely sick/underweight. I didnt personally have an experience at all similar to the one she portrayed but I can see it being very plausible. Additionally, its possible they were setting up for a sequel or implying that its not necessarily the work to recover thats important because it takes a long time and has many setbacks, but the overall choice to commit to recovery because thats truly the hardest part. I refused to even say I had an Ed let alone anorexia until I was out of intensive hospitalization bc in my mind I was just managing my food and exercise like all the people i saw on social media. Sorry that was long AF, hoped it help explain a bit (dont take this as a defense of the movie because it definitely had its fair share of issues, I just happen to know what perspective the director *may* have been coming from)

Hi, *as someone with an ED* (atypical anorexia) that caused severe and permanent medical conditions, this film is *disgusting.* Not because it 'glamorizes' anything but because it pushes deadly stereotypes. Many people who are healthy weights or overweight have serious, debilitating eating disorders. And virtually everyone in this film is emaciated, except the one binge eater of course. This film is a step back in awareness, because it perpetuates a narrative that is a dangerous lie. Most bulimics are an average weight. And in 2018, there was ZERO excuse to have no atypical anorexia representation. They are saying, "here is what eating disorders really look like." *There are gravestones of people who didn't 'look like' they had an eating disorder.*

The AtZ Show I actually didn't mind the whole dream imagery aspect in the end when she was at the point of dying, as it resulted in her realisation for her need to change. I just thought that the ending was too short and didn't focus at all on her recovery. Does she overcome her eating disorder? Does she get back together with Luke? I know some films like to leave things ambiguous, and maybe I just prefer movies to be tied up in a bow, but I just left the film feeling let down. Aside all that I did enjoy it up until the end and stands as an important film for those who are experiencing an eating disorder

Jordan Leach I personally found the ending to be just showing that she decided to go back and the fact that you don't know if she got better or not goes to the point that it might not have as often it takes many times for someone to recover. It is just to show that she wants to get better and the rest is in the future
@gcdvclassof097 жыл бұрын
Honestly, referencing back to my original recovery, my own turning point was anti climatic. You just choose to stop, and like any other choices in life, it is not ground breaking. While it may be personally resounding, overall it is not. Eating is something that everyone does, so in reality it is really not that outstanding of a thing to do. But that is just from my own personal experience. Yes, it was a big deal to overcome my disorder, but the actual point where it happened was not.

@@Kbenhamu yes!! And *spoiler kinda* I thought the scene where the two girls were doing the dishes and the girl with binge ED was asking the bulimic girl about like ‘tips’ or like how she does it just goes to show how it’s a terrible idea to put them all together.

13 reasons why was terrible because it romanticized suicide and mental illness. Hannah blamed everyone else for her condition and ruined the lives of innocent students (other than Bryce) whilst simultaneously making it seem like her death was the only thing that made people listen to her. But in reality, she never tried to talk to anyone. She pushed Clay away and got angry when there was nothing that the counsellor could do even though there are literal fucking rules he has to follow in order to keep his job and her expecting him to break those rules to help her is incredibly selfish.
@theonewiththeblueeyes7 жыл бұрын
Getting Jammy With Jimin Exactly 👏🏻 So many people don't seem to understand that Hannah had Depression and immediately "blame" every other character for how they treated her. When in reality they need to realise that the show is mostly from Hannah's POV and so the scenes will be warped into Hannah's "opinion" of the situation and not an outsider's unbiased perspective. E.g. at one point Jessica even tells Clay that it was Hannah who stopped going to their meet ups and not Jessica. But many of the more impressionable younger teens (or anyone who's never suffered with a mental illness really) just immediately believe Hannah's side and blame everyone - especially the councillor who already had another 500(? Idk how many kids are in an American HS) students to give advice to.

It gets lumped in with 13 reasons just because it's dealing with mental health, but 13 reasons is awful. Suicide in tv and movies is always 'they did this because of this very simple motive' when suicide has so much more complexity. And I think to the bone really shows the nuances of mental health so much better. I almost didn't watch the movie because of the reviews. Then when I did I recognized some of the things she did as something one of my friends did and it really hit home. But even if it hadn't, I would've really appreciated the movie anyway. It's just that good.

Netflix gets a lot of credit and blame for this film. But they didn't make it. They purchased the distribution rights for it, after it premiered at the Sundance Film festival. This film was written and directed by a woman who struggled with an eating disorder, and the main character is played by an actress who similar experiences. This is why for many people, the film is relatable and rings true. But there are still a lot of problems with it. But this is leagues beyond 13 Reasons Why. This is a woman telling her story. 13 Reasons Why is Netflix and Selena Gomez capitalizing on mental illness to make a buck and seem socially conscious.

Honestly, this kind of thing happens in real life too. People tell you off because you're not experiencing your mental problems "the right way" or "the way "they have experienced it," or the way they've read about it or because you don't fit the stereotype. Lots of people with excess weight develop eating disorders, but because they're not the stereotypical archetype of the bone-thin girl purging because she thinks she's fat, they dismiss them because they don't fit into society's perception. Same goes for boys with eating disorders. Or GID, where people use every single thing you do that is stereotypically feminine as proof that you're just confused (the opposite goes for MtF trans people). Or depression, where people think that you being happy for a few brief moments/not being sad every single moment of every single day as proof that you're not actually experiencing any issues at all. Or women with autism. Just... Just women with autism. It's really odd. The qualifications for mental disorders are supposed to be vague enough to not create stereotypes but precise enough to avoid misdiagnosis for a reason. It's because lots of people experience the same disorder in thousands of different ways.

From what I experienced, I thought this was near perfect. It's just SO real that people are afraid of it. Everyone's experience is different with any disorder and as you said this is based around Marty's experience. I genuinely sobbed for the last half hour of the movie and called my mom to say sorry for being such a pain in the ass💓

God this show was so much better than 13 reasons why. I honestly felt sick to my stomach seeing how the protagonist ate less and less and on top of that, she was going up and down the stairs, doing push-ups, constanly burning more calories. During that scene where the doctor points out the hairs on her arm and says it's because her body is trying to keep itself warm, I got goosebumps. Throughout the movie, we see that what Ellen goes through is an illness. How toxic it was for her and how she felt isolated. And although her parents are at fault too, at the end of the day she was the one refusing to eat. And with HELP from others, SHE made the decision to live, to try and to face her fears. Loved it.

ALSO: They showed how glamorizing eating disorders can lead to very horrific things like what happened with Ellen's artwork and that girl.

Yeah 13 Reasons Why didn’t delve into the horrors of depression which often precede suicide. It just followed the book, which was kinda crap to begin with.

They are saying, "here is what eating disorders really look like." *There are gravestones of people who didn't 'look like' they had an eating disorder.* *What's lazy is refusing accurate representation because it makes your movie trendy and draws more money.*

The crazy thing is, I am in recovery for many emotional and physical addictions including binge eating and this movie was spot on with the main character's mental state as far as my experience goes.. I highly recommend it, especially with anyone aware they grew up in highly dysfunctional homes. Great review btw.

For me, the film helped me to understand my struggle with eating disorders and helped me to feel understood. I can see that my therapist and friends don't really understand what's going on. In therapy context, I had to work out that is causing it all by myself because my therapist just kept uttering "you need to eat" on repeat week after week, which caused a relapse in binge eating after nearly a month of severe restricting.

As someone who literally dealt with this and spent time in mental hospitals, people need to be responsible for what content they ingest. Triggers are everywhere and if you were struggling through this film you went in knowing that you would. Film is art and you can’t control other’s art because it makes you uncomfortable.

I don't usually watch movies like this. It surprised me because I loved it. It didn't say all anorexics are like this, it said here's the story of this one girl who was anorexic. Also I like how she didn't have one big problem that made her anorexic because it made it more relatable (and yet at the same time more different and harder to understand) that she had a somewhat average-ish life. She was just a girl like anyone else. That's what made it sort of scary too.

I normally don't comment on videos but had to speak out on this movie as it is one of the best portrayals of anorexia (not glamorized). I'm a male who suffered with an eating disorder so seeing another male in the movie spoke out. Everything she did reminded me of EVERYTHING I would do. Sitting on the laptop and measuring, and what got me most was the huge cup of soda for breakfast. It was scary how accurate it was showcased and was very well directed overall, well done.

This is because of a disconnect in childhood. It is a way of feeling in control when one is really broken inside. This cycle will continue until the patient identities with the disconnect, confronts it head on and allows the true pain to be felt. It is at that point in time when honest healing can begin.

The family therapy scene reminded me a lot of my sister's ED, whenever my family went to the psichologist to discuss about her illness everyone started blaming someone and it always ended up being a huge mess. This film is no different than the Lifetime variety ones I watched as a teen at the height of my sickness. They were like a drug for me. I'm now 28 and when I watched this on Netflix, I was uncomfortably triggered. I know I don't speak for everyone, but while these kinds of movies are relatable, they can also be quite dangerous.

I really loved this movie. I thought this was so powerful and very real. I have fortunately never suffered with anorexia nor knew anyone who has personally. I thought this really brought some information to light I never knew. I think we all think we know what it possibly is like even when we don't go through the struggle. I appreciate how this movie really got me thinking about a topic I never really knew much about but impacts so many families.

I wouldn't even say it has a happy ending, it has an ambiguous hopeful ending which I appreciated because unfortunately not everyone wins their battle and it was a far more realistic way to end the film.

Honestly, I enjoyed the movie a lot. It was so touching for me I almost cried twice, once when the woman had a miscarriage, and again when she allowed her mother to bottle feed her. When it zoomed out with her mother and herself lying in her moms arms, it showed internal framing. It made me so sad because that represented a feeling of being trapped or stuck. Thus, it in more ways than words, it shows how this young lady is feeling Getting into film studies made watchings movies so much more meaningful for me

Excellent video! I find this exact problem in YA books lately. It's like the message needs to be tailored exactly right so that it satisfies everyone and doesn't leave anyone feeling triggered. But what we're left with is a book that is sappy and crams its messages down your throat. There is no grey areas or subtlety allowed when discussing issues and its disturbing that, especially young female audiences, demand censorship on how messages are presented in fiction.

I love to the bone, I will admit that watching it does trigger me a lot but that’s because I already had a lot of issues around diet and body, but I don’t think it was glamourising anything, it is raw and relatable, especially how she constantly says “I’ve got this under control.”

I really love how you pointed out that if the film had been portrayed differently, people would still complain that it didn't mirror their experience! :0 The thing about mental illnesses is that they do manifest themselves differently in different people. Yes, the general effects might be the same, but the way that I experience depression/anxiety is different from that of my friends', just like the way that people I know experience PTSD differs, and so in and so forth. It's one reason why treatments for mental illness are so varied, too. Sure, for one person yoga might help to alleviate the symptoms of depression, but for another therapy might be a better option. Idk, that's just something I see glossed over a lot, so I really appreciate you including it. :^)

I remember when I was a little kid, my mum told me what anorexia is, and I was so terrified because the way she explained it made me think I could have it and I wouldn't even know, but people with anorexia are the only ones that can choose to get better, so becoming anorexic was like being handed a death sentence.

I watched this movie when it first came out. I deal with Major Depressive Disorder and I've had lots of the same struggles with love, care, abandonment, and just overall feelings of self worth. So, I was able to relate really well and I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. I watched it like 5 times actually. It's wonderful. But my point is that you can identify with her struggle, and while the depth may not cover what could be covered, it's not insensitive to the subject at hand. And it SURE AS HELL doesn't glorify anything.

I saw the movie and not only did I find it realistic and not offensive (I know what it's like to struggle with being hospitalized for mental illness and, as someone with Asperger's, I did not have a problem with the "calorie Asperger's" joke) I actually found it helpful. When the doctor suggested that changing her first name will help the main character recover I considered doing that myself. I am very slowly beginning to go be Sade instead of my actual name, Sadie, because I think it may help me when it comes to living with mental illnesses and disabilities. Changing my name can help me start a new chapter in life.
