As a new format for my KZbin Channel, I have planned to do a monthly video with my personal recommendations on what to watch and listen to in the following month. I have picked some productions from different theatres worldwide, which I defined as attractive because of the singers or the musical pieces.
We will continue with January 2023. Have fun watching it! Which of the pieces would you like to watch?
A) In the Vienna State Opera house, there will be two productions, which I will watch live, and I am already very excited about this. The first one is Aida by Verdi. Finally, my two favourite singers, Anna Netrebko (as Aida) and Elina Garanca (as Amneris), will sing together and fight for their love Radames, which Jonas Kaufmann will sing. What a cast!!! The next highlight will be Elektra by Strauss with Nina Stemme!! I am in Vienna from the 11th till the 15th of January for these two performances.
B) The MET is presenting the new Fedora by Giordano (also as an HD transmission in the cinemas!!) with amazing Piotr Beszala and Sonya Yoncheva in a production by Sir David McVicar. Also, there will be an opera by Donizetti L´Élisir D´Amore with Ambrogio Maestri and Golda Schultz.
C) Teatro Alla Scala with Salome by Strauss with Vida M. in the title role should be an exciting evening to spend in Milano.
D) A concert version of Rigoletto by Verdi in Napoli with Ludovic Tezier and Nadine Sierra.
E) If you are in Paris, there will be Wagner´s extraordinary piece Tristan und Isolde!! In my opinion, the role of Brangäne will be sung by Okka von der Damerau - one of the best Brangänen.
F) If you are in Berlin, I absolutely can recommend the Samson et Dalila production in Staatsoper under den Linden. Samson is Brian Jadge, and Dalila is Anita Rachelishvili. (I saw this production in 2021 and was really surprised by it, I will definitely plan a trip again to Berlin (but in February 2023, as Elina Garanca is singing there in the role of Dalila)).
G) Bayerische Staatsoper presents a piece called I Masnaderi (Die Räuber/ Schiller) with Lisette Oporesa as Amalia.
H) In Barcelona (Liceu), you can see Tosca with a wide cast, including Maria Agresta or Sondra Radvanovsky.
I) Teatro Real in Madrid is presenting a new Dido and Aeneas.
J) The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow is presenting a stunning Boris Godunov production with Ildar Abdrazakow (who recently gave this role in Milan)
Thank you for being so interested in opera!
Happy new year!!!
With love,
Alexander J. Leventov
