and one advice which might not be obvious - dressing in thin loose long-sleeved lightly coloured clothes is often better for summer comfort than shorts and a crop top. When experiencing extreme temperatures, look what do people living in parts of the world with such weather wear - it is rearly minimalistic clothing. Shade and coverage is vital, even the best sunscream is no miracle and very few people use it correctly. Personaly I fell in love with linen clothing, altough it wrinkles the best thing is linen does not smell - even after being soaked in sweat after a whole day you can let it dry in the breeze and it is good as new for another day (it has its limits tho :D)

Am I the only person who finds linen hot? When I was moving to a very hot, humid place I purchased many pieces of linen and linen cotton fabric but found that it made me feel hotter. I also found if my arms and legs weren’t completely covered I felt quite a bit cooler.

SIESTA is the key to survival. As the heat is getting worse all over the globe, we have to adapt our daily rhythms using the good old Spanish custom of Siesta. Sleeping or napping for one or two hours in the early afternoon with closed blinds or curtains, what a pleasure! (And for those "but for work" voices: Work starts at 5 p.m. again, look to the Spanish, they 😊 thrive.

Here in Northern Australia, near the Equator line, it’s that temperature almost year round. Agreed, linen, cotton, I also love Viscose, are my staples… and my partner prefers polyester activewear shirts because they’re moisture wicking, and linen or cotton shirts for work and evening wear. Maxi dresses, with splits that allow the air to flow around legs, are my go to - and yes - hugging the shade!

I agree. We moved from New England to Atlanta, GA, in the US. While I have acclimatized to some degree, loose fitting, breathable, and almost exclusively machine washable, is preferred. I have also extended my scarf and wrap collection because of the air conditioning. The best, unexepectedly useful, purchase has been an inexpensive, UPF 50 scarf/ wrap. It doesn't wrinkle, tucks in a bag, Is dense enough to keep me warm as a scarf/ shawl/ blanket on flights, and if I'm out in the sun more than expected; it protects me from burns. Hang in there, fall is coming!

Actually, most scarves work well as sun-protection, just draped over the arms/shoulders - they are loose, and let air flow -also help to keep the bugs away. I used that instead of sunscreen in Africa for 3 years, until I got vitamin-D deficient because cheap scarves are so good at blocking the sun! You can pay extra for the spf if you want, but I like having a variety of colors and styles.

Thankyou Justine. As always your videos are very topical and informative. In Mumbai where i live. sweltering summers are normal. Sartorially speaking putting together " sunday best clothes" for Lenten and Easter church services are always a challenge. We do have a lot of options in indian ethnic and western style wear in linen cotton and silk. But then you have to balance comfort and modesty and looking good too!! So anything short and sheer is super comfy but not considered appropriate for church. What i found useful was your info on tencel/ lyocell fabric. In Mumbai at the moment we're in the middle of the monsoon season . So we alternate between heavy rains and sunny but extremely humid spells. So tencel/ lyocell sounds like a good alternative fabric to natural fabrics. Hopefully i will find some in clothing styles that i like

Here in California I wear a djellaba or caftan, especially one with a hood for the sun, on hot, dry summer days. The slight breeze created by the fabric moving across the skin is incredibly cooling--especially with a spritz of rosewater.

Congratulations on a MILLION subscribers, dear Justine! I love large long clothing out of linen, cotton, lyocell and viscose in summer and also a hat, sunglasses and a scarf. Birkenstock sandals on my feet. Pretty much all covered up, but very light and airy. Climate change made summers in Austria go from 27°C for a few days to 37°C for weeks within the past 30 years. Heat protection is essential.

These are wonderful suggestions. I love full maxi dresses in the summer - I find them cooler than shorter cuts, even though the fabric covers more. I personally prefer cuts that cover my chest and shoulders, because I have pale skin, and even with sun cream, these areas are so sensitive to the sun, but those with a darker complexion might do fine with less coverage on the top.

Although I bought several pieces for warm weather in shops, my favorits for extremly hot weather are sewn by myself because I couldnt´t find what I wanted in shops: Sleeveless, dresses in midi or maxi-length, loose fit, mostly in A-line in bright colours, some also with prints. The first exemplary I created looked terrible on me as it was too loose. I wear it when painting and noone can see me. But the next examplaries came out better. I learned to make variations. I found out which modifications I needed, so that they practical for wearing in the garden, and which style is better for going out. For the late evening I sometimes take a sweater made from french terry with me. Shoes: Of course sandals are great in the heat but for longer walks, sneaker-like shoes made from breathable materials or leather might be better. In any case the color of the shoes shouldn´t be dark because this might feel like burning even though the material is breathable ( I learned this by experience).

My additional tip - if you wear linen or other very breathable fabric, don't be afraid of wearing long sleeves or pants, if those are in a light colour. It's counter-intuitive, but fabric will reflect heat better than your skin. It's also a good tip for people with hardcore AC in the office.

I have a 100% silk, sleeveless top that is loose fitting. It is a crushed silk look. It does not show sweat. Also, I have a cotton camp short sleeve (button-up) and a synthetic sleeveless sport shirt. Both have 'invisible" holes in them. The cotton is stitched in, the synthetic is like it's 'stamped' in the material. They are not see-through. VERY cooling material. A slight breeze goes right through them. Hope this helps. Best!😊

I know Justine isn't a fan of ironing, but I am. One thing to know if you're ironing a new lyocell piece is that you have to run each piece through the temperature gamut, cold to hot, to determine how much heat the garment, not the fabric, needs. Each lyocell garment needs the amount of heat that the fabric it has been 'engineered' to mimic needs, and lyocell can mimic many fabric types. If you're a steamer instead, does this hold true? I'm curious.

Thanks Justine, just a note on water consumption. Actually, there is such a think of drinking "too much" water. If you drink liters of water without any sodium (salt), you'll pee all the water you drink and it won't enter your cells, they'll still be depleted and thirsty. That's because your cells need electrolytes to absorb the water. P.S. The dorctors won't tell you that you're drinking too much water because the signs of depleted, non-functioning cells can result in different kinds of ailments.

I live in japan where temperatures go up to 35 degrees celcius and humidity is crazy. But wearing skimpy clothing is not seen as respectable unless at the beach. People here cover up in cool loose fabrics. I like this better because you avoid getting sunburnt and suntanned, your arms and legs don't stick to desks and seats etc, your skin doesn't stick to that of others in crowded spaces, and also covering up stops you from getting mosquito bites. Really whatever you wear when its over 30 degrees doesnt really change how hot it feels.

Even though it is not as hot, I still don’t know why most people in SC don’t use sunshades for their windshields. There are some nice rivers in TX if you like to kayak and a few parks with clear streams that you can lie around in. They are not the Saluda, but they do the trick. Those women didn't choose to wear dark colors in the summer heat. The light colors are for men and the dark colors are for women in some countries, that is the law or custom. That law or custom was made especially to sabotage women being outside the home. In countries where that law or custom is not enforced, you will see mostly light colored burkas, hijabs, decent AND safe to wear during the heat.

@megumim6795 perhaps indoors or in the shade. But in the sun, absolutely not. You can put two pieces of the same material, one white and one black, in the sun. Place an ice cube on each. The black will melt the ice cube twice as fast because it absorbs the heat. Elementary school project here in the American Desert Southwest.

@@lalywindland5764I have lived here for 15 years I know the customs. Nothing to do with sabotage. And light colours are not going to make any difference in this heat. Hot is hot.

@@megumim6795I feel no difference honestly. I wear full black every day as do many women here. Like I said hot is hot no matter what you wear.

Great recommendations, but there's definitely such a thing as "drinking too much water". People collapse during marathons because of over-hydration, not because of a lack of water. Medical professionals and sports scientists nowadays recommend drinking to thirst.

I think tourists wear sneakers even in hot climate because they are comfy for walking the whole day. For that I ve chosen a light but nice pair of sneakers😊. i don't like comfy sandals😅

Thank you for the tips, especially as the whole world seems to get hotter and hotter now 😰 Finding a pair of sandals (in vegan leather) that don't rub my bare skin to blisters has been absolutely essential to me 😅 so much so that after my favourite pair wore out completely I repurchased the exact same pair haha. Also having a lightweight cardigan of some kind is not just good for AC buildings, it's also great for extra sun protection. For someone with fair freckled skin like me, having bare shoulders is just no longer comfortable in summer. Even with spf reapplied every 2 hours, sometimes I can just feel my skin overheating and wanting to burn if I'm in the sun for too long 😅

I just can't understand the air-conditioning at such low temperatures. We have it around 26° at home. It helps with Madrid's hot temperatures without making a whole artificial cold climate and bankrupting us into poverty because of the electric bills

My eternal conflict is between the desire to wear nothing because it’s miserably hot outside and the desire to protect my skin because it’s blistering sunny outside.
