On this episode of Common Sense Soapbox, Ron goes to prison and finds it not so easy to shame his fellow inmates. To make up for this lack, Ron invents an economic system of voluntary exchange. As our suspiciously-voiced narrator explains, that’s called capitalism.

Andy Dufrane uses a rock hammer to tunnel through his prison cell wall. It took him several years (I do not recall how many, it was a lot) to tunnel through it. He eventually gets into the sewer system and escapes. He was falsely accused of murdering his wife and sent to prison for life. It's one of the greatest movies of all time. My personal favorite movie.

I always remember the scene, I think it's from David Copperfield. David goes to see a relative in prison and finds him working away at his desk. If people could still do that, it would probably change society a lot. They say the greatest form of charity is to help a man become self-sufficient. Modern prison systems are the opposite, robbing people of the chance to be self-sufficient.

Free markets =/= capitalism. Capitalism is based upon capital. In our modern economy that means debt through public trading and loans with compounding interest. Free market: Susie has a lemonade stand and sells yummy lemonade on a hot day, making enough to buy lemons and sugar for tomorrow as well as make more than her allowance. Capitalism: Susie has to up lemonade sales by 15% today so she can pay her shareholders and service the debt she owes to dr. Shekelberg for borrowing to afford the fentynol she has been spiking her lemonade with for the last month to hook people and gain repeat customers.
@CommonSenseSoapbox
@CommonSenseSoapbox Жыл бұрын
Not to get into a purely semantic debate, but the literal textbook definition of capitalism is: ": an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market." Free markets are intrinsic to capitalism as a concept. To the extent that free markets are rejected, it's more accurate to say that those are aspects of the system which are not "capitalism". And in fact, there are several other terms for state-controlled or manipulated systems, such as Mercantilism (which is what Adam Smith was primarily critiquing in The Wealth of Nations), Socialism (which long pre-dates capitalism), etc. The situation you describe, hyperbole aside, is more a function of having publicly traded companies than anything. At least the part about having shareholders. The other part is simply you describing someone committing a crime. In any case, only 1% of US companies are publicly traded and thus have "shareholders". The vast majority are single proprietor and small to medium-sized private businesses.
@lieutenantdan1413
@lieutenantdan1413 Жыл бұрын
@CommonSenseSoapbox I didn't expect to get a response. So, thanks for that. In your very cordial reply, it appears you missed the "compounding interest" portion of my hyperbolic scenario. I bring this up because that is my main argument as to why capitalism in the modern world is flawed. Being able to charge interest, let alone compounding interest on money is a poisoned pill for a nation's economy at every level from pay day advance loans to buying government bonds. In the case of government bonds: when a john buys a long term government bond, hypothetically he pays the government 1000 and expects a 10% return in 25 years, collecting 1100 dollars when he retires. As we both know, the government does not add value to the economy, so all money they have is either printed and loaned from the fed at interest or taxed from citizens. So where does the 100 dollars John collects come from? His kids. Since taxes invariably increase in order to service government debt (like bonds), John, in essence, is stealing from his children via the IRS. But what he gains is practically nothing due to the increased money printing required to keep other money loaning systems afloat. So, who ended up winning in this scenario? The international banking system/Federal Reserve since they collect interest on every dollar printed, causing an inescapable debt cycle due to there never being enough money extant to pay off the debt incurred to create that money. This process is accelerated by and produces inflation, leaching actual value from the economy and individuals I use this example since government interactions are less complicated and varied than personal and coorperate interactions. I acknowledge that this example is an oversimplification and not directly related to economic systems. But it applies to the way in which capital is created (via loans). Since all extant capitalist systems use this monetary scheme, it is reasonable to say that capitalism ultimately only benefits "Mr. Shekelberg" from my previous post's example. Debt and debt cycles are inherent in capitalism, but not necessarily in free/semi free markets. The reason no modern free market is anything besides capitalist is due to international finance using its influence over capitalist nations (and by extendion their armies) to not allow any other nation to deprive them of their profits. Winston Churchill has a quote about Germany that solidifies this proposition. TLDR: In practice, capitalism is a specific flavor of free market that is focused on acquiring capital by any means legal. Since capital only comes into existence in the modern world via bank loans, it is fair to say that capitalism is a soft slavery of entire nations due to interest and inflation working in combination.

It’s definitely reminiscent of carbonated pee, yeah- or at least, it’s how I imagine pee to taste carbonated.

Selling things people want is every economic system from primitive communism, to slave economy, to feudalism, to capitalism, to future communism. Capitalism is an investor owned economy in which workers own nothing

Wrong. I’m not an investor, I own my car my computer my life (selling that in the next few months though) and so do many other people. Under communism you don’t own shit. You’re doled out your cut by what the government thinks you deserve with no choice.
