I think the first season of True Detective might be the best season of a show on television ever. Great video as always!

I remember seeing the two detectives as part of my own personality. I see elements of both those men in myself. And you’re absolutely right, it’s either self-improvement or going down the same toxic behavior that leads to misery. Great video as always.

There’s so much to this show and its themes that it gets difficult to pin point and articulate what it does so well, but you did just that here. Great video!

Another meaningful one, thank you. Remember watching it well, the cinematography is great too. I never want to visit these places because of that, they feel stale with bad memories and vivid with threat at the same time.

I dont know if you've watched it. But I highly recommend Mr. Robot. Its baffling how little love it gets from people. I mean, its beloved by most who have seen it. So it definitely has love. And even those who dont like it still give it props for many of the things in it. Point is. If you're looking for something to watch that is worthy of alot of video essays Mr. Robot is that show. With each year that passes it becomes more poignant, scary, and beautiful.

I think when he drives over the kid’s bike, it was alluding to how Rust’s daughter was killed. She was on her bike in the driveway when a drunk driver hit her. There is a parallel there somehow, I’m just not fluent enough in media literacy to explore it.
@kazmaloop2 ай бұрын
That's an interesting connection. It could be a parallel to Rust mentioning that his marriage couldn't survive the death of the child, like Marty's marriage couldn't survive his infidelity. That still ties into the larger narrative of society not withstanding the death of innocence too.

@@kazmaloop when I watched this series for the first time, I had three daughters all under the age of 10. Needless to say, it unlocked new levels of terror and paranoia. Anyway, when I saw him drive over the bike I thought Jesus, a kid could have been riding that thing and he’d probably be too drunk to notice in time. Then I remembered that that’s exactly how Rust’s daughter died. That show was so otherworldly at times, talking about these deep philosophical ideas about nature and death, but then it would also feel so tangible. It made me think that there could be a cult like that in real life, and it’s right around the corner from where my kids go to school.

Something I find very interesting is that, in the real world, the people who actually perform "satanic rituals" are christians, like it was mentioned in the video, some people turn from "Jesus to Satan". People who don't believe in god or even self proclaimed satanists, who are completely different from devil worshipers, don't make sacrifices to something they don't believe in. Rust is not religious, people judge him for it, while the religious ones are the ones who commit atrocities, none of them as a rule, but as an inversion of expectations.

Rust is Addicted to the loop he could have got out of the force agyer the shootout and became a painter, the truth is he was looking for a way to kill him without actually going through change a slow suacide

Great analysis. I kept waiting for someone to talk about the real world cases this was taken from. It really makes this first season even more ominous. It's a black pill but damn it's good.

You missed the biggest direct influence on Rust: the supernatural pessimism of Thomas Ligotti. In "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race" Ligotti explicitly lays out the case for voluntary Human extinction. He argues that this logical result of the futility of conscious awareness and the burden it places on the sole surviving hominids.

It was the best show ever... if at the end the palid mask was removed and the yellow king had been revealed, it would have been a masterpiece.

I'd say it's the best single season of a show that's ever been made. It's certainly my favorite and most recommended. I'm glad that they only lightly touched on the Chambers/Lovecraft influence, because I think focusing on those things would really change the character of the show, and I'm glad it retains a lot of mystery.

Rust has a cross on the wall over where he sleeps, or should I say dreams. So maybe he does subscribe to a particular deity.

Really think the latest season of TD (might country) follows through with the themes just as well if not better than season 1; I think the finale for season 1 did too little for the ambitiousness that was established in all the episodes before it.

Too little? You might have missed the implications in that final episode...
@lightscorer13202 ай бұрын
@@DichotomousRexI think he meant with the whole Tuttle conspiracy. We find out about this massive group who does sacrifices and the final episode is just Rust and Marty trying to arrest one guy? I was a little dissappointed by it even though I still liked it and thought it was well done
