There are so many types of ammunition to stockpile it can be hard to decide what to get. Here are some of my thoughts on the right ammo to stock!
When prepping ammo for long term storage it can make things much easier if it's all the same type. But when you talk about cartridges like 5.56x45 NATO, 7.62 NATO or even 9mm, there ends up being a lot of variety to choose from. How do you know what kind to stock up on? Which is best for SHTF ammo? M193 vs M855? What does that even mean? Hopefully this video answers some of those questions for you!

Many indoor and outdoor ranges don’t allow M855 so it sits around. Steel case or 55g for classes. 77g gives the best of both worlds, short barrel or long range even though it’s pricy. Ammo used in training is more valuable than stockpiling with zero experience

Same here, but .308 instead of 30.06, no 7.62x39 or 20 gauge. I buy xm193 in bulk, as well as .308 in 147 gr. Just got rid of .300 Blk, as I had a blackout round go through my .223 barrel. I sold the gun and ammo. That was a really lucky shot that I didn’t get hurt or killed. FN barrels are tough. Also have revolvers in .38,.357 and .44 magnum. They also need ammo!

You may be able to handle more with the right gun, assuming you have use of two arms. Is the issue weight, recoil, or both? .32 caliber revolvers with non magnum rounds offer minimal recoil, and substantially more power and reliability compared to rimfire. The Shield EZ 380 was designed to offer minimal recoil. If you are going to stick with 22, a revolver make more sense for the sake of reliability.

If you can afford the ammo, I suggest a Ruger 57. The velocities and ballistics are incredible. Very low recoil and the .27 grain will go right through level 3 soft armor.

22lr is very effective. I'm also disabled and recoil of most loads isn't tolerable. I choose a Ruger 10-22 for the job. Remember , the 22lr has been doing its job since 1887 from hunting and sport to Self defense. (Here come the Caliber war comments 🙄 )

Very common misconception 22 actually has more recoil than some other larger guns weight per velocity yada yada you’d be surprised nine mill may have less Kik than your particular pistol always consult an expert not me. FYI always get copper jacketed for pistols the lead tip can leave residue inside barrel possible catastrophic failures long-term. Pistols specifically rifles are another story.

Simple for me 22lr 9mm 45ACP .308 12 ga (slugs 00buck, BBshot, 6shot, 8shot) Got rid of my AR-15 and moved to a AR-10 for hunting and self defense. At 70 I'm not going to be running and gunning. I can do more with 308 168 grain match grade. 180 grain soft tip for hunting. Stock more M80 150 grain. Mostly for practice. Still investing in precious metals LEAD & BRASS I LIKE GOING HEAVY ON EVERYTHING. I THINK IT'S WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY FOR THE KNOCK DOWN POWER THUMBS UP ON CCI 22LR! MY FAVORITE! For 308 I only really like bolt guns and the DPMS G2 Recon, the lightweight one. With the muzzle break you can buy with it it handles the same as an M4. Except in .308. Other AR-10 designs are just too heavy with too much recoil/muzzle rise for me. That muzzle break makes even that light gun have practically no recoil or flip. I love it.

If you live in the US, I would recomend having a rifle that fires 5.56/.223, just because it is the most common here. It would be easier to scrounge if need be.

Loved the video! My only concern is, that you talked a lot about the ballistic capabilities of M193 vs M855, but didn’t mention anything about the accuracy difference between the two. Paul Harrell made an awesome video showing the difference between the two, and it was a significant difference.

The accuracy difference changes depending on range as well. I havent personally confirmed but m855 is generally known to be more accurate at longer ranges, maybe 200yds+. Whereas m193 is more accurate at short range. This is somewhat or largely dependent in barrel and weapon also.

I recently bought a Taurus TX22, and that striker fired pistol will shoot and cycle anything. I also have (and recommend) a .22LR conversion kit for AR15 rifles. It's basically just swapping out the bolt carrier group, and using the .22LR magazines that came with it. I paid about $200 for it, and I use it all the time so I don't have to shoot my 5.56 ammo when practicing.

Glad you talked about the twist rate and ammo that works best for what you have. I have a bulk of M855 and some 72gr BTHPs. I have some M193 for the range as they don't like green tips. If you have a AR with a short barrel the M855A1 would be a better round.

When it comes to 22lr another company I would recommend is Norma. For auto loaders their TAC-22 comes in the standard 40 grain and it runs absolutely flawlessly through both my m&p 15-22 and Browning buckmark pistol. They also have a nice variety of high speed, varmint and other types of 22 and their prices are hard to beat.

My only issue with M855 is it's tendency to ice pick. M193 and M855A1 don't have that issue, and while A1 is rare, M193 is common with consistent wounding characteristics. Velocity or bullet construction is key. That's why I stick with longer barrels and lighter projectiles.

@cjgames001 So ice picking can be seen in one of three examples. Cavitation gel, ballistics gel, and use in the third world. Ice picking is what you commonly see called "the neck" in a ballistics gel test. It's the point where a projectile remains both stable and intact. M855 consistently has 6" or more of neck in both ballistics and cavitation gel. This translates to .22 caliber or smaller wound tracks passing right through half starved fighters doing little to no damage, keeping them in the fight longer. M855A1, by encapsulating both penetrators with what is essentially a light for weight fragmenting hollowpoint while the shape of both the penetrators encourages yaw upon separation, avoids the ice picking issue by not relying on yaw for terminal effect. At worst, you get 3" of neck. M193 is different than M855 because it's so low mass and high velocity, that it relies on fragmentation over yaw for wounding. This also makes M193 less effective in shorter barrels and out to longer ranges than M855A1. That being said, you consistently get 3" or less of neck. Now, if you're willing to spend a $1.20 a round in your stockpile, MK262 and most of its clones have consistent terminal ballistics within the effective range of the barrel you put it through. 77gr. OTM/boat tailled hollowpoints are just great at tearing up soft stuff with a consistent 2" of neck. There is the worry that MK262 can't penetrate armor, but realistically, M193, M855, and M855A1 can't defeat level 3+/SRT or level 4 plates either, so practice failure drills and pelvis shots. Barrier penetration may also seem to be an issue, but good barrier performance tends to go hand in hand with poor terminal performance outside of M855A1, so should be left in the hands of a crew serve weapon of higher caliber or volume of fire (your DMR, SAW with M855, or situation dependantly a GPMG). Moral of that story is your SHTF plan ought not be a lone wolf plan, but if it is, avoidance ought to be prioritized with terminal performance being massively important should you need to use your rifle.

@cjgames001 Sure thing. I'll break it down by different types of rounds and optimal barrel lengths. So common knowledge among gun nerds is that 5.56 gets its wounding from velocity. While this is mostly true, and most loads need to go at least 2300-2500fps when they reach the target to do significant damage, there are some quirks with different loads. Let's take M193 as the first example, it being the first chambering for the AR15 series of rifles. It's most effective at 0-300 meters from a 20" barrel. Keep in mind that the rate you lose velocity from chopping down a 5.56 barrel is parabolic, so you can expect relatively little loss in capability between 20"-16" (you lose about 50 meters) and slightly more between 16"-14.5 (you lose another 50 meters) down to a 10.5, where M193 essentially becomes a 50 meter cartridge if you want to maintain rifle wounding characteristics. I'm not saying you can't hurt something past that, but it's operating more like .22 mag from 50 meters onwards. Long story short, M193 is for your point blank range encounters (0-300) and is a great generalist round so long as you have a slower twist barrel that's 14.5" or longer. Moving forward in military history to M855, and you get a round that's excellent for barrier penetrarion. If you want a lot of cheap ammo that can punch through car doors and windshields accurately, M855 is your guy. If you're looking for a round that delivers reliable one shot stops outside of directly hitting the nervous system, look elsewhere. Like I said in my last comment, it was practically made for the SAW. The next step was the best step, in my opinion. Mk262 was designed in tandem with the SPR program, and because of that, it had a ton of input from SOCOM on what they needed and what it did. It's a more accurate round than almost anything else on the market and has insane terminal ballistics even at lower velocities around 2000fps. This extends its range out of most barrel lengths. While I would still avoid 10 inch barrels with it outside of sneezing distance, you realistically add 200 meters of effective terminal ballistics to any given barrel length. Special forces units took it out to 800m effectively and repeatedly in Afghanistan with 14"-20" barrels. It's great out of short barrels up close, and it's great out of longer barrels out further. It's M193 on steroids. The final step in 5.56's military story is M855A1. While it is a barrel burning, extractor chewing, chunker of a round, it's the happy medium between M193's terminal performance out to 300 meters in a 14.5, but with M855's barrier blindness and ability to buck wind. It loses out to Mk262 in three ways, though, effective range, terminal effect (which is exponentially greater from Mk262), and availability. As expensive as Mk262 is, Uncle Sam is holding almost all of the M855A1 and isn't surplusing any anytime soon. And unlike Mk262, other countries aren't cloning or using it, so there is no surplus from abroad either, unfortunately. From there you move into the civilian world of hunting and self defense where everything is a delicate balance of penetrarion and expansion. Bonded soft point can be absolute garbage for 2 legged predators if the projectile is too heavy or the round is moving too fast. FBI found a goldilocks zone for their round that hits an even 18" of penetrarion in their gel test from their short rifles. But it's hard to find a good clone or the ammo that they use. Hollowpoints also have a tendency to underpenetrate and expand unpredictably which isn't ideal for anything outside of varmint hunting. I could go on for a minute and in more detail, but I've hit the character limit for comments repeatedly, so imma cut it off here and leave room for any more questions.

55 grain runs perfectly fine in 1/7 it's way more accurate and the ballistics are way better for m193 out to 300 yards than m855. The m855 usually just goes straight thru someone so if you don't hit a vital theres no wounding capabilities but m193 fragments pretty fast and causes a much bigger wound plus has more velocity than m855

Barrel length and twist rate change those numbers. It's less than advertised anyway. On top of that it won't matter if you ever have to use it in shtf. Figure out where it hits at 50 100 200 and then worry about things that will matter more

There's quite a few cases of M193 penetrating plates M855 doesn't. This tends to be a short distance thing, like sub 10 yards or whatever the NIJ test distance is. I believe this is due to the higher velocities on impact. M193 also really benefits from 20" barrels and drops off faster at short barrel length than M855. Just other things to consider.

You can get the m855a1, but it's extremely expensive and not practical to stockpile. It also wears your barrel out. For those reasons, not ideal for shtf.

I get 223 and 5.56 when ever I find either at a good price. My main ammo to Stock pile is just 7.62x39 Wolf/Tula steel case ammo. You can still get thousand round cases in Alaska for $399 and most of my friends have an AK or AR in 7.62x39 in their arsenal. Looking forward to PSA producing steel case soon!

I have a bunch of IMI ammunition 77 grain 5.56 and a bunch of 55 grain wolf. Any opinion on steel case. Also I question your claim that the 62 grain out penetrates a 55 grain. I thought velocity was the driving factor in penetration especially against body armor. Lighter bullets are faster. Or is there another factor here, like the 62 grain being a hotter load?

Sometimes. SS109 adds SOME additional medium barrier penetration at medium ranges compared to the slightly faster 55 grain. It's not 150 grain M80, but adds essentially no weight and no space in your pack. May the odds be ever in your favor.

It seems like I've been beating this dead horse lately. The stated FPS on the box is for a SPECIFIC barrel length and firearm type, temperature and weather condition! Only way to correctly know is to test it in YOUR firearm to confirm. Also confirm your zeros and hold overs for different types of ammo. Zero for 55g, 62g won't hit where you aim. You must confirm and not assume.

@@ECTT1776 I made a post about this in the comments just now, most modern body armor can stop 308 AP. So it's definitely gonna stop green tips. I recommend in my comment that people get their hands on hollow points in 5.56. because you'll need to shoot around the plate if someone had one. And the hollow point is really gonna ruin someone's day when it's hits them under the plate in the gut or groin, or in the neck, shoulder or leg. With body armor becoming better and more wide spread green tip (in my stupid layman's opinion) is becoming obsolete in most situations.

Most COMMON AR twist rate is 1:9 and works perfectly fine up to 68gr. Above 68gr you will be better off with 1:8 / 1:7 twist rate. I use Sierra HPBTM in my 1:7 AR that I've tried to clone into the MK 262 round.

Agree with your logic. At the end of the day if you are preparing for SHTF then the one shot defensive rounds are not that important your threats will be Qty. As such any nato FMJ round in any caliber will have the needed affect. Look at the Kenosha shooting. The 5.56 ball tore a 3 inch hole in the assailant arm and he was out off the game.

My personal stockpile choice by caliber 22LR: whatever I just grab. 22LR lever action isn't picky and its all accurate enough. 9mm: 124 grain because my 16 inch Uzi carbine loves it. 45 ACP: 230 grain. Not much to say here. My EDC loads are 180 grain JHP. 12G: 00 Buck and Slugs because that's how a shotgun do. 5.56: both 62 and 55 grain in separate cans, because why not? 5.45x39: 7N6 for stockpile. 60 grain FMJ for plinking. 7.62x39: 123 and 124 grain. Steel cased. Cheap, reliable and powerful in an AK. 7.62x54r: 7N1 mostly, but really anything I can get my hands on cheap. I reload for it using Winchester brass. 7.62x51: 147 grain because surplus is cheap, FAL and HK-91 run it well and its accurate enough. Also got a big supply of funny calibers and brass because of my Military Surplus rifle collection hobby.

If you are a 1990's infantryman, you have a 20" barrel on your rifle that shoots green tip M855 just fine. If you have a shorter barrel, you want the 55 grain bullet. Hand load with 75 and 77 grain may be right for the longest shots, but for F class you need more cartridge AND more bullet. Which do you stockpile? Use time machine and go back to Spring of 2008 to buy. Also, get a dozen SKS's and 10 cases of 7.62x39 for a thousand bux.

Look at barrel twist rate more than length of barrel, 1 in 9 twist, look lighter, 1 in 7 twist check out what the heavier loads do coming out of your barrel. Try a little bit of various sizes and see what your barrel shoots best.

I love PMC and Winchester ammo. Only problem is Winchester hasn’t exactly adjusted their price to reflect current supply vs when the pandemic started. At least not in the 5.56 area. Their 9mm is pretty good priced and I was able to stash up 1000 rounds of 115 grain FMJ, but that’s about it.

If you’re shooting a striker fired gun make sure you don’t have a bunch of lube/dirt in your striker channel gumming up the firing pin etc.

Level 3 AR500 plates will stop 62 grain M855. But 193 will punch through it. It seems way to many people don't know this. It takes level 3+ AR500 plates to stop 193 55 grain because of the speed. Plus 193 tumbles in soft tissue which creates a bad wound chanel. M855 basicly punches a hole like a ice pick. It all depends on your mission. Knowledge is key in knowing all the differences between 55 and 62 grain.

Don't be a target, and move quickly to cover. Infantry is half digging animal to survive fixed positions. Speed is life. Steel plates are acceptable as part of vehicle protection, but when dismounted, be quick and gone.

You can’t discount the tumble effect of the 55gr. Pretty devastating compared the the straight in sometimes over penetration of the 62gr. I will take the 55gr all day out to 200 yards. Where I live in NC 99% of shots will be 200 yards and less due to terrain

What I find amusing is 1/9 on 18" is 2 full revolutions of the projectile. 1/8 on 16" is 2 full rotations of the projectile. 1/7 on 14.5" is 2 full rotations of the projectile. Look at the original M16a1 and its twist rate and an even longer barrel. With gas lengths, port sizes in barrels, etc. It's cool to see what differences you can get. Then again, take 2 identical rifles and they may very well like 2 different types of ammo completely!

For a budget AR15 that will shoot Tulammo look no further than PSA classic or freedom. We are talking about the typical 16 inch upper. Factory Zero your sights. There are many how-to’s out there. Start out at 25 yards and keep shooting until you can shoot a ragged hole out of the center of a target. This is where you adjust the sights If you are new than shoot off the bench (you can practice standing later). Then get yourself a red dot. Don't get anything cheaper than a Bushnell trs25 and do not get anything bigger than a 3moa red dot. You will need a UTG mid mount riser to properly cowitness. Make sure the red dot is mounted as far forward on the upper without having it hang over. Make sure you can still shoot a ragged hole out of the center of a target after adjusting the red dot with the sights. From here you can start shooting steel silhouettes out to 300 yards and you will hit it. So my point is you can shoot cheap tulammo and I have found it to be really accurate. And the Red dot I recommended is really reliable. My point is you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a very accurate rifle. If you can afford better equipment and projectiles GO FOR IT! The same principles apply.

CCI Mini Mags and Stingers are great. The Aguilla 22lr selection is nearly equal to the CCI and affordable. I stockpiled cases of that when prices fell after the Obama crisis. Two cons you did not mention for the m855: because of its steel core it is not a homogenized bullet, is not balanced as well and therefore is not as accurate down range. If you go m855 you are also dealing a more drop than you would with the m193. And I guess the third that I just thought of saying that is that a lot of BDC reticles out there are tuned to the m193 round so if you are looking to take shots further out you might have more energy down range but chances are you're going to miss or hit extremely low.

Yes .556 is higher pressure than .223 and its not ment to be shot in .223 chambered firearms but its the reverse for 762x51 and .308. 762x51 has lower chamber pressures than .308 because its ment to be used in a military set standard of use. Now .308 is a hunting cartrage which set specs are all over the place due to diffrent applications and game its used to take as to not destroy the meat. NATO specs are at the LOW end when it comes to 762x51 loading and .308 can have double if not 2.5x the chamber pressures of 762x51 nato loadings. Its why its said you can run 762x51 in a .308 chambered gun and be fine but to run .308 in a 762x51 chambered firearm can be dangerous cause of the extreme pressure loadings of .308 in a 762x51 chamber. Also the 9mm NATO is just slightly higher pressure than standard target ammo but still less than most self defense rounds you buy off the shelf. Folks that dont throughly reasearch topics they talk about like they are experts cause it just says NATO on the box are the ones that will get folks hurt or worse. BTW I agree m193 is more accurate and shoots flatter out to 400m than its GT counterpart but the effective range of both rounds are still almost the same and yes both will go through car doors and windshields with the same effect at close range (50" or less) but I rather take accuracy and speed with my .556 cause with that I get penetration. Cant get penetration when you loose accuracy.

This is why I stack both M193 and M855 50/50 on top of one another in my mags. Best of both worlds and I haven't noticed any difference in POI in ranges under 300 or less. 90% of combat situations happen at around the 50-150 yard range and getting hit with either of these rounds will ruin someone's day regardless of the PPE the target is wearing.

@@amerikhan8507you must have magic rifles. I have quite a few 16 and 18" AR-15s and do notice a fairly significant shift in POI between the two. M193 also chronos at 3200+ fps and M855 usually around 2950-ish. You're going to get quite the significant difference in drop past 200 m. Just plug the stats into any ballistic calculator to confirm. But I agree getting hit by either would ruin your day

Back in the 80s there was a place that sold 163 APs for the 7.6x51 $100 for 1,000 rds. ,they also had 163 APIs but they were $1 a round, the good old days

I agree with u on the m855 green tip and the 9mm nato. I really like the 9mm nato being 124 grain +p it flies at the same speed as 115gr standard 1200fps but is heavier so hits harder i think its the best of both worlds i just got 600 rounds of winchester 9mm NATO for 12 bucks a box.
