Quick video on which types (weights) i recommend to use in small engines. I prefer to use Valvoline brand oil, and to break engines with i use super tech brand. Not advertising brands of oil, just stating my personal preferences. Dont want to start a debate on oil brands here, just showing what weights to use. Thank You.

Hi. I always try to answer comments/message asap. Briggs says 1 and a half quarts of SAE30 or 10w-30 (both high detergent) but i always run quart and a quarter, because when you fill it up with 1.5 qts, it can "flood" the oil slinger in the engine, and i feel it can cause not enough oil to circulate, so i always run somewhere between 1.25 and 1.5 quarts. but briggs does recommend 1.5 quarts. thanks for watching!!!

@fubecabr yeah that would be good, depending on the climate. I've ran 10w-40 in mower engines with no problems, thats a good weight if a engine is starting to burn oil. I've heard of that before, and also another good thing is for every 10 gallons of gas, mix 1 gallon of diesel in with it, that helps upper cylinder lubrication as well. thanks for watching

My dad always said Havoline was one of the best, he knew a small engine mechanic that used to swear by it. I only know of one place that sales Havoline now, and its fairly expensive. I do still have some valvoline so I probably will use it this year. Wow, thats good with that many miles! I have a buddy that swears by Castrol, i've never used it. I've used supertech before too, its alright, and i actually have some now, which i usually use to break engines in with or flushes. Thanks for Watching!

I use Amsoil in modern vehicles, it’s as good as it gets. But it’s $15 a quart and not made for small engines. Valvoline is great oil for push-rod vehicles and small engines. NAPA oil is the same oil as Valvoline. Comes from the same tank.

hi. great engines. I would not reccomend a 40 weight oil unless the engine burns oil, which would cut down on oil burning, but i reccomend SAE 30 or 10w-30, and if your winters are cold then you could use a 5w-30. Thanks for Watching!!!

Rotella or Delo 15w-40 is great for mild climates and has a much more robust additive package than the ones shown in the video. It's just as cheap too. In AK, during the winter, I use 5w-40 Rotella or Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel truck in just about everything from my truck, car, ATV, and snow thrower. Another thing I do is run cheap walmart 2 stroke premix in EVERYTHING. I run about 100:1 in my truck and car. I run 50:1 in my small engine 4-strokes. It quiets the motor and improves MPG.

Fair enough. The older vehicles are easier to work on, probably wouldn't benefit from synthetic oils as much, and are less expensive. That said, I personally like a vehicle with 4 wheel Disc Brakes... ABS, Stability Control/Traction Control etc. I also like the newer design of having one coil per plug, no plug wires, 4 valves per cylinder, overhead valves, and a lubricated timing chain that never needs to be replaced (vs. a belt), and I like variable valve timing/lift.

I usually use Super Tech SAE HD-30 oil in my lawnmower and have for years with no problems. I have used Briggs and Stratton oil once or twice, but I can’t tell any difference in how it runs. One professional even told me that your engine won’t know the difference as long as the viscosity and formation are correct. I would say he was right. I would save that money.

Newer model cars you can still do much of the routine maintenance yourself. Light Bulbs (or rather HIDs) are replaceable (interior LEDs won't burn out), you can top off fluids, change wipers, wash the car, perform an oil and filter change (you may need ramps & wheel chalks & a special filter wrench), can replace brake pads, rotate wheels, replace air filter & cabin air filter(s), and spark plugs are often cake right on top under their own coil packs. Anything major is easiest to contract out!

@fubecabr it might smoke if anything, but it wouldn't make it run rough (at least i wouldn't think) because ive ran my 11 Horse briggs on about 20% gas to 80% diesel just to see if it would run, and it ran great, hard to start and smoked alot. thats how the old tractor engines were, they started on gas then it switched to diesel or usually kerosene after it was warm. Yeah thats the advantage of 2 stroke oil, another product out on the market is MMO (marvel mystery oil), its supposed to

I do like that about new cars, its easier to diagnose problems. i just don't like the fact that cars are computerized now, i like a old carburetor haha yeah thats true, the basic maintenance is still pretty much the same. Spark plugs on some new engines are really hard to get to. I do like how the codes will say like cylinder #2 misfire, then you can go to that one cylinder and see whats going on, fouled plug, or arcing wire or even something more major.

I order a tune-up kit online annually from repair clinic. $10 for the kit and $9 for shipping. It comes with 18 oz of B&S oil (SAE 30), air filter, spark plug, and fuel stabilizer (enough for 2 gallons of gas). The first year I used the mower, it went through about 5 tanks of gas. So I ordered the kit, and changed the oil and stuff. It was black as tar, the air filter was black and oil covered, and the spark plug was soot caked. Now it goes through a tank a mow. which aint bad for 3 running hrs

actually supertech is made by different manufacturers based on region... some of it is made by sopus (shell, penzoil, quaker state), some is made by exxonmobil, and some is made by warren oil... there may be one other i'm forgetting but those 3 i know for sure... to tell the difference... if the bottom of the bottle has "wpp" on it it's warren, if the bottle is similar to mobil super/mobil 1 then it's exxonmobil, otherwise it's probably sopus

At one time the engines ran on leaded gas and non detergent oil. Now if memory serves me well, it all changed in the mid 70's with internal nylon parts. Those parts need to be clean to perform. I know because I had to change internal parts on my 1957 iron horse to today's standard and the same with the type of oil.It still runs without a puff of smoke.

I used SAE 30 in my robin subaru ex40 generator. I have abot 5000 hours it burns through oil before it runs out of gas. It has a 8 gallon gas tank. It holds 1.2 quarts of oil. I used sae 30 since August of last year. It smokes and fouls my spark plug after about 40 hours of use. Did I do something wrong. I read the manual a couple of times to be sure and read several threads.

I'm glad that you brought up HD meaning high detergent. Many would think that it means heavy duty. +charredskeleton On some brands it does mean heavy duty, just depends. But usually when a oil isn't high detergent it will state non detergent, The only think i don't like about supertech is that it tends to thin out when its hot, but i still use it for break ins, but i switched to rotella shell t1 straight grade diesel oil (still SAE30) but available in gallon jugs at walmart, it seems to be holding up great. I listen to 50's, 60's, & 70's on XM on my newer car. Engineering just depends. With any car 1995+ you start with a scan tool to read a stored code (i.e. P0102 Mass Air Flow Sensor low input) Then with the car off you pull the sensor out of the air-box (in this example) and notice it is filthy, so you clean it then reconnect it, clear the code, and wait-and-see. If you have a miss, a code will tell you what cylinder. Plug, Coil-Pack, Clogged Injector, Computer, [or loss of compression :( ]

I don't see why you couldn't, but remember once you use synthetic you can't go back to regular. if you look on the back of the oil container (sometimes the front) there will be a small circle looking thing with API service scan on it, it will have either sl sj or any other codes on there, if it doesn't have it then don't use it, its more/less a quality rating which is based on additives in the oil. Thanks for Watching!!!

Great video. Quick question though: These small engines that use flat tappet camshafts recommend an engine oil with an API service rating of SJ with high ZDDP levels for anti-wear protection of the lobes/tappets. The Valvoline SAE 30W states it is an SN rated oil which has a greatly decreased additives I believe which can cause premature wear of the cam lobes, etc. Maybe I am wrong? But I know in classic cars with flat tappet cams, they have to have an SJ, SG or other good quality oil with a greater additive package in it.
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 9 жыл бұрын
thanks. Yeah alot of oils have decreased or did away with the ZDDP, I've never had a problem with it, i don't think its nearly as critical on a small engine, for one there is less spring tension on the valves, so that takes alot of stress out of it. But it is possible though, i don't have no proof either way. I do know that stp additive has ZDDP in it, so you might be better off to add some to the oil. I'm not sure about lucas additive, it might have it. I'm actually going to run diesel engine oil this summer, i've done research on it and it will really stand up to the heat of small engines, it won't thin out nearly as much. It has CF-2, CR stamped on the back of it (rotella t1 sae30), but its a experiment, alot of people sear by it. Thanks fo watching!!!

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I have heard of a bunch of people going to the Rotella T1. I think I may start using that in my equipment as well. I have used Castrol HD 30 for years now, but like the others, it is now SN. I would feel much better using an oil with a better additive package, like Rotella, Delo 400, etc. Just my personal preference. Especially for the kind of heat these engines take.
@fnaguitarplayer9

Your welcome! Yeah I think its a much heavier duty oil, and the price isn't bad at all either, i got a gallon jug for 12 something. I bought 2 because I got 3 mowers to try it out in this summer. I know what you mean. I've been using supertech brand HD30 the past couple years (trying to save a few dollars) and it literally drains out like water. Same as 10w-30, in any brand. Thats when i got thinking about using diesel oil, also i considered using 10w-40 motorcycle/atv oil made by valvoline, i'm not sure of the specs but i'd imagine it would take heat good too.
@TheTerminator310
@TheTerminator310 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I like Valvoline products too myself. Most everything they make is top notch. They've taken the ZDDP out of these other oils I'm guessing because it kills catalytic converters and pollution issues with the EPA. So now, it's down to diesel oil or motorcycle/atv oil. I currently have 2 mowers myself. Troy Bilt 17.5 HP with 150 hours and a new Husqvarna V-twin 24 HP with about 11 on it now. Definitely going to change over. That's not bad for a gallon jug! I know that the SJ rated Briggs and Stratton oil you can find at Lowe's is like $7.98 per 48 oz. Thinking I'm going to use the diesel oil. Will work just as well and maybe even better.

***** Yeah valvoline is good stuff, I use that high mileage stuff (red jug) in my truck, does really good. I know right, i was surprised at how cheap it was. I almost decided to use that briggs oil, but i think its overpriced, and you know briggs doesn't make it, I can't remember who actually makes it, but its just a briggs sticker on it haha I did think about buying one jug of that just for the jug (i'd use the oil of course haha) but the jug would be handy for measuring out 1.5 quarts, thats the only thing i don't like about a bigger jug. Yeah it might be worth trying, i'm going to put it the test this summer, i think it will do great. But do keep in mind that on something new it will void warranty, anything but briggs brand will haha

fnaguitarplayer9 non detergent engine oil it's for use in engines that do not have a oil filter or an oil filtering system of some kind an example would be an air compressor motor that is spun buy a belt that is connected to an electric motor. another example would be an old push mower without an oil filter or an old riding mower or a new cheap mower may not have an oil filter or oil filter system. I have no idea where you have obtained your knowledge or lack thereof sir but you are wrong plain and simple you do not want to put a detergent oil in an old motor that someone has been using non detergent oil in entire life because the non detergent oil does not carry dirt particles and other particulates around with it. instead it allows those particles and particulates to fall to the bottom of the oil pan or the crankcase. again I'm not trying to be an a****** but you are giving false information and there's a lot of use on this video so now you got all these people that think oh no you can't put non detergent straight 30 weight oil in a push lawn mower or a riding lawn mower that does not have an oil filter. so now people are going to go around and put 5W30 or 10W30 detergent oil in their engine that does not have an oil filter or an oil filtering system and yeah it might not ruin the engine right away chances are it'll be just fine but you will increase engine wear rapidly because that new detergent oil that you put in that old engine that has particulates and dirt sitting on the bottom of the crankcase or the oil pan is going to get in that new detergent oil and it's going to circulate throughout the entire engine including the piston rings and you might cause severe damage to your engine. including scored Pistons or scored cylinder walls am I the only one here that went to high school shop class and actually paid attention? also I continuously people over and over again at parts stores in other mechanics that I work with what is best 4 in engine that does not have oil filter or an oil filtering system and their answer is always the same. this is not an opinion it is fact read the back of the f****** oil bottle or bottles of the non detergent straight 30 and detergent straight 30 it will explain it if it is a good oil brand or ask a good reputable mechanic or a good reputable oil salesperson or distributor and they will tell you the same thing I am telling you I hope you're not so stubborn that you will still disagree with me and the facts. so if I were you I would change the video or take it down because people are still watching this in 2017 and getting the wrong information from you. I sincerely hope you listen and do some research. thank you

I used Valvoline racing 50 wt, in 1968 in my Norton 750 motorcycle and it blew the bottom out 3 times in 3 mths. The mechanic (He drag raced twin 750's inline) said some one was putting water in the oil tank, but what happened in the air cooled engine the oil could not handle the condensation and was foaming which broke down the lubrication ability. Never used Valvoline again.

@vemtrak54 well if you use non detergent in a splash lubrication engine it will destroy it because it doesn't clean the parts and it will sludge up in no time. And briggs says that on the website, and briggs doesn't even make non detergent oil, at least i've never seen it. I mean thats news to me, i've always used HD in all my engines, i've always heard never us ND oil. Not trying to start a argument but i'm just saying.

@fnaguitarplayer9 8 жыл бұрын
+terry218e I have always used (and will continue to use) detergent oils in any small engine, I have been told this before but in all small engine manuals i've seen its never said a thing about non-detergeant oils, and 90% of new equipment specifies 10w-30 oil anyway. But I always use SAE30 in summer time equipment and 10w-30 in winter equipment, lately i've been use rotella (shell) diesel engine oil (straight grade 30 weight) and its been doing really good. It is true that the particles will float around with detergent oils, but if you use non-detergent then all the sludge builds up in the bottom and you don't want that either, the main thing is just keep up with the oil changes, that way there isn't much dirt in it at all. The only times I use non-detergent is in pressure washer pumps or air compressor pumps. thanks for watching!!!

Interesting that you use diesel oil. The general rules is that gasoline engines should not be lubricated with engine oil made for diesel engines, but the major premise behind that is the damage that can occur to catalytic converter in automobiles made after 1975. With the cat converter out of the way, I guess the extra lubricating properties of diesel oil (ZDDP) could benefit the small engine.

Thank you for your quick response. I'm going to stock up on SAE 30 HD oil to put in my customers mowers. I've been doing a lot of reading on the net about detergent versus non-detergent oils. Half of what you can find says only use detergent oils and the other half says only use non-detergent oils. Even info from manufacturers contradicts itself. I've been researching oil for a week and it's driving me crazy. I have found that, IF IT DOESN'T SPECIFICALLY SAY NON-DETERGENT ON THE BOTTLE IN BIG LETTERS, then it has detergent in it. Almost all the oil I've seen does not say it's non-detergent. So most of the oil sold everywhere does have detergent in it so it can't be that bad for a small engine like a lawnmower.
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 9 жыл бұрын
Your welcome! Heard that, yeah the only time i would recommend 10w-30 if its going to be used in the winter like a snow blower or generator. It is very contradicting about non detergent and detergent. You correct, unless it specifically says non detergent, its detergent oil. And I would never use non detergent because it lets the dirt/sludge build up in the oil pan. And the argument is that since most small engines do not have oil filters, the dirt can damage parts, but if you use non detergent it will just build up. I only recommend non detergent oil in air compressors or pressure washer pumps. But yeah I would never use non detergent oil, I just don't feel it protects it as much, and if you notice 90% of the time, the non detergent oils are alot cheaper, so either the detergent additives cost more or its a lower grade of oil. So yeah, SAE30 Detergent in summer use and 10w-30 in anything in the winter, non detergent in compressors, pumps, gearboxes that call for it, etc. one good site that i've done alot of reading on is bobistheoilguy.com, alot of info on their, and some will contradict what I said, but i've never had any oil-related problems by using detergent oil in small engines, even using cheap super tech HD30, which i do find does break down alot more. this year i'm trying a new oil (to me) shell rotella DIESEL HD30 T1 Straight Grade, its cheaper and its available in a 5 quart jug, being diesel engine oil it should take the extreme heat of small engines much better, I will be doing a video on it somepoint in the next month or so. Thanks again for Watching!

Yeah, it's synthetic. Used in nearly all new Toyota and Honda engines. My girlfriend's car, a 2010 Toyota Camry, uses it. But her Dad said that 5W-20 is better. To me, it's 6 one, half dozen the other. I've yet to see a major fuel economy difference. I found that the 0W-20 gives her 33 MPG and the 5W-20 gives her 32.5 MPG under the same driving conditions. *Shrugs* But I'd never put anything but SAE 30 in my mower

I'm not positive but I believe years ago u needed to run NON detergent oils in air cooled engines with no oil filter. Now almost all oils have detergent in them but I believe they are ok to use in them now. In fact I think most non detergent oils now are MINERAL type oils made for compressors and such. I like to use regular SAE straight 30 weight in warmer weather. And 10-30 or 10-40 in the winter.

Non detergent oils should be used in engines without an oil filter. Non detergent lets the metal particles fall out of suspension into the bottom of the sump to be removed during oil drain. Detergent oils keep these particles in suspension letting the oil filter catch them being removed during filter changes.

always told never run 15w40 in air cooled motors. Not partial to multi viscosities. Like the diesel oil idea, but most are semi synthetic so I imagine you have to look. Always ran Kendall GT-1 40 wt in TB Horse tiller and motorcycles. Mowers and others I use 10w30 but will look for SJ designation for wear protection. I do worry about flat tappets after people lost race engines with cam failures after ZDDP was removed. BTW, recently sold my 97 Ram 318 with 455K on it and ran Valvoline 30 wt from day one. Only internal failure was a broken valve spring at 200K. Oil is cheap insurance.

@@fnaguitarplayer9 sincerely, what the hell @speedskiff2 is talking about?? 15 w40 engine oils are perfectly safe to use with overhead valves engines especially for people who lives in a warmer climate. I use a much heavier Castrol GTX 20w50 in my little generator and I didn't experience any problem . Thick oils sticks to the internal parts better, have a high strength film, high zddp (mineral) and have high resistance to oxidation . Sincerely I don't like 30 oils, they're way too thin and will thin out way too quickly under high temperature
