It takes a lot of honesty and strength to show your failure like that. Most DIYers just wouldn't have posted for fear of ridicule. I think it was actually better to see it that way instead of success. You showed people what can go wrong.

@@fnaguitarplayer9 So you really saved me a few days of hassle. I thought aluminum might be tougher than that. I've never tapped screws (11/32 I think) on the flywheel and have never taken an engine apart, but this piston rod broke in 3 places. So with the other videos I should be able to fix this. Thank you.

The assembly of the lawn mower could be done without any problems kzbin.infoUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend I just puzzled something about the red strange “key”. However, it quickly turned out that this creates a kind of contact bridge between battery packs and lawn mowers. An additional backup as a father of a 1 year old nephew is great!! :-)

Burst right out laughing watching that and my wife was wondering what on earth I was watching. Now, I wasn't laughing at you but in sympathy because I've been there and done that, too. As someone else said it takes a strong, confident man to break that puller and still leave it in the video so others can learn. A weaker personality would have edited that part out or just gave up. Thank you for all the ideas you gave me in this video. Kudos to you, sir.

Despite the failure, very good info on fly wheel pulling alternatives. I have a Briggs lawn edger that is getting no spark from the coil/magneto, and need to pull the flywheel to change out the points/condenser. Also good to see a KZbin poster that (at least not on camera) does not rant and rave or spout profanity over this incident (puller failure). Kudos to you, sir.
@fnaguitarplayer9

haha. On most engines with points/condenser you can usually clean and set the gap and you will get spark back, but if that doesn't work then you have to replace them. (i have another video on this). Yeah I try to control that haha I wasn't really surprised when it broke, my eye got surprised by a piece of metal though. haha Thanks for watching!!!

Cool, I want a puller set like this, now I know to look for a good one. I needed to fully remove the crankshaft because it was bent due to hitting a water main (lawn mower). If you need to remove the crankshaft, heres what I did. Remove the oil pan, unbolt the connecting rod from the crankshaft and slide the piston far up inside the cylinder to get it out of the way. Then remove the nut, washer, and cup from the flywheel end of crankshaft, thread nut back on until it is flush with crankshaft (to protect the threads) and carefully hammer away. Seperated flywheel and removed crankshaft all at once. On a side note, why the heck doesn't Briggs and Stratton come up with some kind of shear bolt/cotter pin type system to hold the blade on so you don't have to do an engine rebuid everytime you let your girlfriend mow the yard :)

Some flywheels have three puller holes instead of two. Ran into those on an old Montgomery Ward Sea King boat engine and a Homelite Trash Pump when I had to clean the points and condenser connections. The style of puller you have will work on both two hole and three hole flywheels.

Hey matey, it happens. What I loved most about this was.... You explained the other ways which you wouldn't recommend, and they were legitimate safety and practical concerns. You then went and got the right tool for the job. You then explained the correct way of lubing it up to use a rattlegun on it. It was just bad luck the thing broke mate. It was designed to do that job and it failed through no fault of yours. At least that's the way I see it.

I saw the orange chicago electric impact wrench and thought, hey, I have one of those. Harbor Freight. Then I saw the puller. I got one of those for Christmas. I will not be using the impact wrench on that. First time I tried to pull a flywheel I used the gear puller you showed. After some struggling, the flywheel suddenly broke in half. I do not recommend that method. Thanks for the video.

@steedandersen i've done that before, it does help. some engines are just more stubborn than others. yeah its a taper fit, most people think the flywheel keeps it from spinning on the shaft, all it does is align it up so the timing is right. Some do run them without the key, i'd think it would start to slip after a while who knows haha thanks for watching!!!

I tried the same type puller, my puller didn’t break but one of the bolts did.. so I extracted the bolt, and I tried a three jaw and a 2 jaw puller and wouldn’t work, as you said. Now I don’t know. Trying to replace the starter and the torx part of the starter bolts stripped out. And I can’t get a socket on it. Do with all that typed I guess my only option is to try the puller again. And I did find out that I screwed the bolts in too far cause it was hitting the top of engine which is why I broke the bolt trying to get it out cause it messed the threads up. But further like you said, you live and learn. Good vid though. Thanks.

This is just an example how hard these flywheels are to get off! I used both types of pullers and not even budging (1995 year 289707 12.5 I/C) Used lots of pb too. The 3 arm puller broke off part of the flywheel (#693557) top of the crankshaft was below the top of the flywheel making it even harder. What did help was a torch (+pb +gear puller). when I used to work on these as a kid, what I was taught was use a bar of lead - use on the ears of the'spinner ' to loosen it and for the flywheel, put

I'd use an impact too but the REAL problem was the fecal balancer puller more than anything else. It was a cheap casting. Forgings deflect and do not snap like that. The preferred method for using pullers is strike the puller screw with a (preferably brass to protect the head of the screw but ya can always grind off any spalling) hammer after snugging it down tight a bit more gently with a wrench or impact (I'd use the impact too since it spins them faster).

@fnaguitarplayer9

Yes, sometimes you will need to thread them, the thread will depend on the bolts on the puller. On the newer engines that have the plastic fins, the holes are threaded, but the old ones that have the cast fins will usually need to be threaded. Thanks for Watching!!!

How do you do it with a bolt and how do you put it back on?
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 10 жыл бұрын
WIth the bolt type, just put the bolt in so the threads screw in about 3 turns, (so the bolt head is above the flywheel so it has room to pull up) then use the puller. It is alot easier to put the flywheel on then taking off, put the keyway in the crankshaft or the flywheel and set it back on the crankshaft lining up the key way, then turn it after its on just to make sure the keyway didn't fall out, then torque the bolt, nut or starter clutch back down to the spec, if it isn't tight enough it will shear the key. I show pulling and re-installing the flywheel in my 4 part video on rebuilding a 12.5HP briggs and stratton, you may want to watch through it. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!!!

I give the flywheel a good shot of PB Blaster around the shaft and in the key way. These engines rely on friction to retain the flywheel and this usually makes any method of removal work more smoothly. Just remember to clean it off before reinstalling the flywheel, as I said it requires friction to retain it.

Good video. Well done for showing the tool breaking. Failure is always an option, as they say. On my B&S mower the flywheel (part 795549) has fixing holes for a puller, but don't appear to be threaded, at least, not all the way to the top. I tried putting a couple of different size bolts in the designated fixing holes, but nothing seemed to grip. Any idea what the bolt dimensions are, thread pitch, etc.? The flywheel is virtually welded on, and I've tried all sorts of methods; penetrating fluid, three-leg puller, hammering, prying, etc. Nothing has worked so far.

Thats why you shouldn't use an impact wrench with a pulling tool on a flywheel or centrifugal clutch. You can crack not only the tool but the wheel right in half. Use hand tools and a hammer to tap the push bolt on the puller to work it off. Appreciate your honesty however

DON'T use an impact wrench with pullers, slow & steady wins the race.

I wouldn't use an impact on anything that's cast. Cast iron or aluminum won't be able to handle the vibration given off by the impact. Ratchet would have worked fine. Time consuming, but you'll get it done eventually. Good video.

That is good advice, most of the time i use a ratchet, but for some reason that 11 horse flywheel is extremely hard to get off (not the first time i pulled it). Appreciate that, Thanks for Watching!!!

they are a paint to get off. and push mower engines are even worse. i've used a brass hammer before, lead wold work too. i'm going to build me a really heavy duty puller this summer hopefully. thanks for watching!!!

Great job brother, the problem wasn't you. Some things from harbor freight are just junk right out of the box, that's why their prices are cheap. Harbor frights Pittsburgh products are good, but even then if your needing to remove rusted old bumper mount bolts, or suspension bolts without using heat on it, you'll need a auto zone great neck, craftsman, or better yet if you have the money, buy a mac tool or snap-on product. I use harbor freight sockets which holds up, but I had to buy a snap-on breaker bar, since my '98 Chevy 2500 lug nuts broke my 1/2" harbor freight breaker bar lol.

Thanks! Yeah most of their stuff is hit or miss, some good some not so good. oh wow! I'm actually surprised the breaker bar broke, because I use it all the time and even had to put a 4 foot pipe on mine the other day, it was bending but held up haha Thanks for Watching!!!

...put lead bar on top of crankshaft and hit with hammer. But for those big flywheels: soak in pb, screw in the puller, tighten, apply heat, tap top of puller. Prob wouldn't have broken it of I used the torch first instead of last

what happens if you remove the flywheel to my go kart engine, would give me more power
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 10 жыл бұрын
No, it won't even run, the flywheel has magnets on it that power the coil/magneto to make power for the spark plug to fire. They do make afermarket lightweight aluminum flywheels. thanks for watching!

you know how he said he just pulled the flywheel to take the points and condenser out because he's using a new ignition coil so dose that mean i can get away with using just a new coil??
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 8 жыл бұрын
+biofall38 Yeah, thats what i did on this one, i put a coil off a newer model on it, the old coil went out. Just cut and ignore the wire going to the points/condenser, and connect the shut off wire to the coil's terminal. Thanks for Watching!!!

How to you keep the flywheel from spinning? I'm trying to do this while it's still mounted to the mower so that hopefully I can test the stator and see if there's a voltage regulator under the flywheel because I can't seem to locate it anywhere else and the guy from JR Rosencrantz insisted that it has to have a voltage regulator,lol
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 8 жыл бұрын
Most of them will have a diode to convert ac to dc power for charging, but the ones that have a regulator are usually external. Thanks for Watching!!!
@luigiprovencher
@luigiprovencher 8 жыл бұрын
+fnaguitarplayer9 Yeah! It's got the diode and there's definitely no regulator. I've already got the stator and a new ring gear on order so hopefully I'll have it all back together next week.

Yes the 12.5 in the 4 part video does have the bolt on it, i had to go back and watch part of the video to see. In part 1 i remove the flywheel, and its probably in part 3 or 4 when i reinstall it. Hope this helps

Best method for any puller is to hand tighten with a wrench then give the big screw a firm smack with a hammer to relieve the tension. Repeat that process as needed for a slight gain each time the tension gets relieved until the job is done and even that wimpy cheap puller will serve well and last forever and make the task very simple even for a weakling child.

You still have to make sure NOT to heat them too much. It may warp while cooling or burn the parts hidden underneath. We all make mistakes and GOOD negative comments are always welcome. We all learn new tricks everyday and everybody benefit from them. I sure do.
