So downloaded avi converter but it must be a different version than the one you are showing. It ask file type? m4v ipod, mpv iso v1, mp4 ios v2, mp4 psp are my choices. And for audio codec MP3 is not an option. Choices are mpeg 2/4 audio AAC or Apple lossless. Please let me know what to choose. thanks

Decrease the sample size of audio and video before conversion... Because old models doesn't support high bit rate of audio and high frame rate of video

That's because the bit rate is 4,000 kbps. If you change it to 1,500 the file is much smaller and the quality is ok considering the resolution is 720 x 480 (NTSC SD). You don't need 320 kbps for audio either, 128 is good enough for most vehicles. But if you have a very clean system in your car you can set the audio rate to 192. Thanks to Divine Knowledge for posting this video. I didn't even know my head unit could play video from USB until I saw this. I used it as a starting point and found that the video still played even if I changed some of the settings. I also found AVS Converter to be extremely slow so I switched to Video To Video converter app. This converts from 720P to SD at 50 - 60 fps (conversion speed, not frame rate setting) and the video still plays on my Sony head unit. I kept the basic settings from DK's video though. Must be AVI extension, AVI format with XVID (MPEG-4 Advanced Simple) or MPEG-4 (Simple) codec. Audio must be mp3. Maximum bitrate 8Mbps, maximum frame rate 30p/60i. These are from Sony product manual for XAV-68BT head unit.

Oliver Pejcic The player should automatically resize the video to full screen, unless the aspect ratio is different from the display aspect ratio. But there is no problem to convert the video to higher resolution to see if it makes a difference. The image quality will not change and the file size will get bigger, but if that is not an issue then go ahead.

@@jaegersing You are saying that if I put the resolution to 720p it won't even look better, it would only get bigger in size? I've read that DVD highest frame size is 480p not 720p. My Kenwood Dnx5260Bt is 6.1 inch screen, aspect ratio I think it was set on default 16:9.

Oliver Pejcic It wont look better because there is no way to add detail to the video, you are just making a bigger file. But to be honest, on a 6 inch display you don’t really need an HD source. Yes the DVD spec is 480 for NTSC (576 for PAL) so it is possible that your player may refuse to play a 720p video file. Some players will handle it, some will not. But no harm in trying.

Check the aspect ratio settings. It should be 16:9, assuming your input video is 16:9.

I looked further into this, because I was also seeing pillarbox black bars on some videos, instead of edge to edge picture. The problem was that my video converter was assuming square pixels whereas NTSC 16:9 needs non square pixels. I found a handy utility here (www.videohelp.com/tools/MPEG4-Modifier) that allows you to change the pixel aspect ratio without modifying the video data.
