We don't even need to think about how a riderless horse places. Even if he reaches the finish in first place, disqualification will be the result. If any part of the jockey's body touches the ground, even if he/she hangs on to the neck of the horse, horse and rider will be disqualified. The same is true for equestrian jumping events. If the rider falls...that's it. There is no "getting back on" to finish the course. The horn is sounded...and out of the showring horse and rider must go. This is why you sometimes see a rider hanging on under the neck, and trying to swing back on. If no human body part touches the ground, rider and horse can finish the course

Do NOT Say “What was he thinking!!” Because he was thinking about the horses’s future, and what was good for the horse. Just because they don’t win, doesn’t mean they weren’t thinking. This jockey let the horse rest when it was done, unlike so many others in this sport who push and push until the horse has to stop their career early because of injuries and detrimental damage due to being pushed too roughly. This race was in the UK and I have seen a twice UK Champion Jockey do it, but luckily his horse just held on. The half a furlong to go post is a relatively new thing in UK racing, and this was a Hunter Chase race for amateur riders who might only have a few rides at professional tracks like this. And here in the UK, jockeys ease down all the time when they think they have or actually have the race sewn up, and this jockey even apologised and admitted his mistake and received a 28-day ban for not winning a race that he should have. There was nothing wrong with the horse and the stewards would not ban him for easing down on a supposedly injured horse and I really do not want to appear rude here, but you are commenting on something that you know little about, I'm afraid.

When a horse loses its jockey the race is done. The people have to catch the horse and the riders have to slow down and stop to keep the riderless horse from thinking the race is still going. I've been to farms where the horses are taught to break from the gate and run a ways without a rider. After a few races they figure out they have to run until all the other horses start to slow down and they will slow down and stop on their own and can then be calmly ridden off the track after the race.

100% jockey error - THIS MUST BE ONE of every jockey’s worst nightmares. Riding 33/1 shot Lookslikerainted in the 4.45 at Newbury this afternoon, amateur jockey James Ridley looked to have the race all sewn up when closest rival Duke of Lucca fell at the last. Ridley and his mount were 15 lengths clear and facing nothing more than a Friday evening stroll to the line when a momentary lapse of concentration turned a simple win into disaster. Mistaking the half-furlong pole for the winning post, Ridley stood up out of the saddle and began to ease the horse down in celebration of a job well done. And as they trotted obliviously towards the actual finish line, Triangular and Ballytober stormed through to finish first and second respectively, leaving Lookslikerainted in an unlikely third. Ridley was later banned for 28 days by the stewards for failing to ride out the horse to the line.

The jockey noticed his horse couldn't push itself anymore so he stopped him and dropped him out of the race

He was thinking "I am going to get a ban for excessive use of the whip and miss my ride on the Derby favourite "

A jockey knows when the horse has had enough, if he rides him into the ground, the horse can have a heart attack or just break down and never race again. A good jockey would never do that just to win one race. They always put the animal first believe it or not.

You can see clearly he pull the veins to slow down the horse....he got paid by someone to loose the game, trust me.

Unfortunately, I cannot trust you because that is not what happened and there are far better ways to lose a race than this. The jockey mistook the half a furlong to go post for the winning post and so stopped riding when thinking that he had already won. And it is not really a good idea or very nice to defame someone when you do not understand what is going on.

He knew what he was doing. That horse was exhausted. He could barely go on. Its a wonder if he was able to walk off the track after that race. And for all we know, he could have been injured going over one of the fences.

He did not know what he was doing, he mistook the winning post and so eased down thinking that he had already won.
