What was I cross shopping with my NX350h? Here are my two runners up!

Hey, friends! So many of you have asked about the NX versus Toyota Venza, what else I was considering before buying my new NX, what the most refined and best driving compact crossover out there is (hint: it’s not a Toyota), and so this video addresses exactly what I think and like about the Venza and why the new CR-V should really be on your list too.

Great video. I just purchased my first Toyota after a lifetime of CRV ownership. I bought the 24 Venza. I also cross shopped the NX 350h. You are EXACTLY right on everything! I had the previous model before the new 23 CRV and it was hard to give up the quiet glide and solid door thunk and security of the CRV. The Venza won because for the price I would spend for the touring, I could get the features you mentioned plus ventilated seats and a spare tire. Honda CRV is a beautiful reliable vehicle but they have fallen seriously behind in the technology dept.

Excellent video on many levels! As someone that has shopped the NX, RAV4 Prime, Venza Limited, and the CRV Sport Touring for the last year I agree with all of your observations. I ended up with a Sport Touring because of the peaceful interior and a dealer that sells for MSRP.

Josh, we are a bit like the US, with huge distances to travel. The Prado, LandCruiser, Series 70 are all very popular here given some of our rugged terrain plus loads of, (what we call some retirees) ‘grey nomads’ are continually on the road towing caravans. We love the US and spend a bit of time around Monterey, Pacific Grove , Carmel CA, I could live there. It’s a little like where we live here in Sydney, not far from the beach. Ian

I love my Mazda’s handling but I need a more practical car especially nowadays with the gas prices and I can’t wait any longer for Mazda to release hybrids. I think CRV is a better fit for me.

I realized I forgot to mention it in the video by the CR-V is the one I had a deposit down on, and had the Honda dealer not messed up my order/reservation I wouldn’t have gotten the NX haha! In any case, the CR-V is an incredible car now; it has such a refined ride and the design both inside and out is beautiful to my eye. You do need to go hybrid for the refinement (the turbo gas engine is a hard pass all day long for me) and I would recommend top trim to get all the refinement it has to offer. Plus the Bose stereo does sound really good too.

Great review! Was also considering RX 350h ($57k) I went with the Venza ( Limited) ($45k out the door) because of the price and options. It is very hard to find a NX with all the things I like and would cost a lot more. I went with limited as I like the HUD it keeps me safe not having to look down😊 To get a NX-h .. I would have to get the Luxury version with HUD, Pano, and navigation.. I prefer not to use my phone for navigation.. plus you get the bigger screen. For me the biggest drawback of Venza is the lack of an actual sun roof. I did not get the stargaze roof as I could not find one. You are correct that this car and NX is not for a large family or I would even say larger people ( over 5’9). For me this works just fine for 2 short people and a small dog. I left BMW X3 x30i for more reliability, but I miss the luxury level of BMW. I am sure Lexus materials are more luxurious, but the luxury NX h is over budget right now. 😅 I am 1 month into Venza and feel it is a great SUV, will last a long time, and gets great mpg 44.3…. However missing the luxury refinement of Lexus or other brands like Acura, BMW, Mercedes. People call Venza an old lady car 😂😂.. but I am early 40’s.. My positives: Love the infotainment screen, digital display, wireless Apple carplay, JBL system, HUD, heated steering wheel, memory seats, folding mirrors, ventilated seats, Some good options for a Toyota ( Lexus Light 😂) BMWs do not come with ventilated seats or HUD unless ordered that way. Ps.. love your red seats.. I wish Venza would offer more colors and interiors. Definitely like the XLE nightshade with the black trim and wheels, makes Venza a little younger looking, but I like the top options. The paint is much softer on Venza then a Lexus for sure and I have ppf 🙉..

Yes I so agree with everything you say here!! I had a 2016 Volvo XC90 for a while but also decided not to buy that out of the lease for reliability, but I do miss the luxury that European brands do so well. I think the Venza is a GREAT choice at least for the next few years. No one knows how long this economic downturn will last and how wide its impact may be so I don’t think you can go wrong with having a Toyota right now that will guarantee you reliability and longevity if this whole crap shoot lasts for 5 years. When things start looking more certain, we can all go back to European luxury! When interest rates come back down I’ll definitely be back at Porsche for a Macan or Cayenne. As for the NX, I agree; I didn’t get the luxury but I found a Premium that had the HUD, 14” screen, standard moonroof, and digital mirror which were the key features I really wanted. I don’t know if you’re missing a lot with not having the stargaze roof; I like to actually open my moonroof on warm days which you can’t do with the stargaze roof (my best friend has a Venza with it and it’s nice for the light that it brings in but that’s about it). In any case, the Venza is a great car and when you’re ready for whatever comes next, I’m sure it’ll give you a great return!!! Can’t beat that low Toyota depreciation.

@@joshjamescars lucky you! You found a NX with HUD.. wow! It was easier to find a limited Venza then a NX with the options I wanted. You are right those rates are horrible! I had to get out of my 22 X3 for family reasons and it was an even trade for Venza Limited. That’s the tough part about them.. wonderful drive, horrible depreciation! I definitely didn’t like the stargaze, but yes with the weather changing… I miss my pano roof soooooo much! 🥲

Great summary! I came from a Mercedes SUV and am less than a month into the Venza. I got the Venza for reliability - Venza by far feels better to drive. And while there are some luxury items not in the Venza that I had in the Mercedes I only miss the passenger power seat and memory.

Wow! this is the first video of yours that I've watched. Very informative. In fact these are the three vehicles that I'm shopping for. Currently, I have a 2018 Honda Accord Touring with a 1.5 liter engine. It's nice, but I'm looking for a hybrid. Obviously curious about the CRV but also the 350NXh and Venza! I appreciated your clear critiques and prase of the pros and cons of each vehicle. All of them are really good but it truly is subject to personal preference. I'm leaning towards the Lexus because of the buying experience - their dealerships here in the Seattle area are beautiful and the service is legendary. But I love my Honda and the thought of a plug in Venza is absolutely thrilling. Anyway, thanks again and nice job.

Awesome video Josh! Stumbled across the channel and love your garage collection especially the 4Runner TRD Pro and new GX! We had two beater cars and just upgraded my wifes to a Venza XLE for many of the same reasons you stated here, didn't rly care for the NX250, and the 350h was a bit over our budget, plus Lexus are stolen like crazy up here in Toronto (mostly RX but also NX and GX to some extent all have high theft rates...) We also looked at the UX250h and the new 2023 X1, but Venza was simply best bang for buck. Next goal is to upgrade the remaining beater to my dream car 4Runner :)

As for the 4Runner, it’s an amazing car and will hold its value like nobody’s business, so a great investment whenever you get to buy it! That said, I’d advise you to buy sooner rather than later as the second they get discontinued you can be sure the prices on the used market will skyrocket just like they did on the old FJ Cruiser. We may end up selling ours because of the GX, but I’m waiting for that to happen first LOL!

Haha thank you so much! As for the CR-V I actually think while it is slightly boring, it’ll probably age better over the years than any of the others. Venza is already starting to look a bit dated, though it’s still a great option (however this is now it’s last year for the US market). As for me, I’ve always talked a lot. Probably not always so eloquently! 😂 When I was a toddler, I rarely said anything and my mother was a bit worried. My grandmother told her not to worry and that I’d have a lot to say later on. She was right, obviously. 😂😅

Great reivews, Josh. First of your reviews I've watched, and it promoted me to subscribe. I watch a LOT of reviews, and appreciate that you have an honest and pragmatic approach to the vehicles. (Some of the reviews paint everything as marvelous). I'm gathering info for an eventual replacement of my '14 Forester XT. Love the power and handling, utility, great sightlines out all windows, and the ability to tow 1500 lbs. With gas prices where ithey are in my State, and the XT only an option in the Outback now, I'm hoping to find something with "respectable" power, and better economy. Feels like some of the hybrid drivetrains can approach that formerly conflicted set of parameters. (0-60 in the mid-7's would be fine). And at the station in life where we'd like a bit more luxury and less road roar on the interstate. Do you know if the Venza or NX350H has a tow rating? I think the new CRV's are only rated to tow 1000. For the annual gas savings, I could easily make a few extra trips to the yard waste place. I appreciate the info on the differences in the drivetrains (New Honda vs Toyota/Lexus). Seems like that merits a look, and the CRV would retain more useful cargo space, but not be as gawky looking as the RAV-4. (Never did warm up to the current styling.) Enjoy your NX!

Hello, and thank you so much! I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed! The Forester XT was one of the best things Subaru ever made, I kind of wish I’d bought one before they went out of production. As for your next car, yes! Hybrids feel fast regardless of power because there’s that kick of electric torque right off the line, and mid-7 seconds is absolutely doable. Go watch my latest video for more but the new Prius we just bought does 0-60 in 7.2 seconds which is faster than my V8 GX LOL. So Rav, NX, CR-V, etc. should all be good enough. I really like the CR-V hybrid, I thought it drove beautifully, as long as you don’t need the more advanced tech features it’s a great choice. Towing ratings for the most part are between 1,750 and 3,500. The Rav is rated at the same 1,750 as the CR-V and the NX is only slightly better at 2,000. The Venza I believe is actually rated for 3,500 which is the most of the group, oddly enough. And I think the Venza is actually the best middle ground in terms of premium feel to cost ratio. We ended up flipping our NX to buy a final year V8 GX (see more recent videos on that) because I didn’t feel like the NX was that much better than a Venza… interior materials and such were on par with any high-trim Toyota out there. I don’t know what the market is like for Venzas these days but you might want to ask a dealer and if you want to replace the forester in the next year, put your name down now and wait for exactly the right color and spec to arrive!

OMG, my wife and I just got back from a week in Scottsdale, we had the same Venza you rented from Hertz. It had the bent up MN front plate I had to straighten, OCD. Damn nice car, not a fan of CVT’s, but it had decent performance when pushed.

Really helpful video for someone that’s just starting to really think seriously about options including all those in this video. The supply issues confuse me though; are people seriously paying full MSRP or more for vehicles from Honda and Toyota? I’m coming from an Audi, so your point about the dealer experience resonates with me. I hate the cost of repairs on my car, but the dealership sure is calm and nice compared to Honda, Toyota, etc.

Hello! And yes, unfortunately they are. Supply is so low and demand is so high for Toyota/Lexus. It always has been but they lost so much production capacity during Covid that there’s so much pent up demand for them, and on top of that with the economy in the toilet and the very real possibility of a long recession (not to mention global political tensions), I think a lot of people are now looking for cars that they can buy in cash and keep for 5-10 years with minimal maintenance costs. So, yeah you’re LUCKY to pay MSRP on a Lexus/Toyota/Honda right now and or wait months for what you want. I will never and have never paid more than MSRP, though. The upside is that Lexus and Toyota especially hold their value like nobody’s business. My almost 4 year old 4Runner is worth as much as I paid for it back in late-2019 and our NX hybrid is worth more than we paid in January. Granted, that isn’t NORMAL, but even in normal economic conditions you can sell a Toyota even 5 years down the line with 50K on the odometer for not much less than you bought if for.

Great video! One area the NX beats the Venza and CRV is the infotainment screen integrated into the dash. The other two both sit up above the dash. I think that is a bad decision and will not age well either. CRV's used to be integrated, not sure why they changed it up. Honda needs to bring the hybrid powertrain to the Acura line...then we can really get the best of both worlds competing with Lexus. I am really stumped why they still haven't done this especially with such high demand for hybrids.

I agree with Honda needing to do more with hybrids. The MDX used to have a hybrid too but that’s since gone away. I think they would be really dumb not to offer the next RDX as a hybrid, and I’m interested to see if they’ll bring an Integra hybrid since the Civic hybrid is coming next year. As for the screens on the dash, the NX’s is still also not fully integrated but I will say while you’re right that it might age poorly having the screen so high up on the dash makes it really easy to glance across at it without having your eyes fully leave the road, kind of like the heads up display.

The NX looks like a good compromise being at an in-between height and mostly integrated. We can't have everything, but we sure can hope 🙂

Before I bought my Camry hybrid I was also looking at the Accord and Mazda 6. I wanted a hybrid sedan so Mazda got crossed off the list and Honda had no Accords available unless you ordered one (I couldn’t even test drive one because they had none on the lot). So here’s where the Camry came in and I’ve always liked Toyota the most over the big three Japanese brands, so it was a no brainer (and the Toyota dealer had one to test drive too 😂).

I have the 2021 venza base model and love it, and would definitely trade it in for a venza prime if they made one. The base model is so worth it for the price because of all the included items for base. Auto lift gate. 1 touch up-down on all windows. Electric folding mirrors. Wireless charging. All lighting is LED. Electric steering wheel adjustment (which retracts out of the way when car is turned off and automatically goes to where you had it when turned on). Safety Sense 2.0. Front/ rear defrost with heated mirrors all standard.

I could not agree more! The luxury features that you get as a result of it being made as a prelim product for other world markets is incredible! In fact, there are things on that Venza that I don’t have on my $65K Lexus GX (auto folding mirrors upon lock/unlock, for example).

However, I found out that the new Honda CRV's do not have a spare tire. For me, a deal killer. I know, what are the odds I will need to use one. It's sort of like buying insurance. Thanks Josh! This review is very good and thought provoking. You even got me to revisit the Honda CRV Hybrid. Unfortunately, with this new generation CRV Honda, at least for the U.S. market, has opted to chase the "nihilistic/sinister" style that is so popular with autos these days, i.e., black wheels and other parts (mirrors, for example). Honda provides no freedom of choice for the consumer in regard to this. So the "Sport L" and "Sport Touring" are non-starters for me. So I'm going with the Venza where the "dark side" theme is contrained to the "Night Shade" trim and I can get a Limited in colors and appointments that actually brighten my mood.

I agree I can’t stand that look. Personally if I’d decided to buy one, I would have changed the wheels out to something else and that would have been enough for me. The Venza is a great choice but you have to go with the Limited if you want any kind of moonroof (and it doesn’t open at all).

thanks Josh for all your reviews especially about the NX. I currently have a Lexus ES350 (2007) which I really enjoy (had a Honda Accord SE before that) and the Lexus is really quite inside. I was wondering about two things: I get the impression from your reviews that the interior noise for the NX isn't as quite as say in a current model of the ES350 or other Lexus sedans due to the use of the 4 cyl engine being used (compared to the 6 cylinder in my ES) especially during acceleration when you need to get up to speed when getting onto the freeway. Is this correct? My second question is how is the noise inside the Venza compared to the NX. Are they about the same level or is there additional insulation on the NX to keep it a bit more quite. thanks again for all the work you put into your reviews.

Hello! Yes you are spot on in your summarization of my opinions on it. Your ES is SILKY smooth and ultra quiet (we just bought a 24 Camry which has the same engine and it’s exactly the same way). 4-cylinders just have to work so much harder and it’s much harder/impossible to fully drown out their noise profile. So… if you like the way your ES just whisks you down the road with a whisper, you aren’t getting that from ANY Toyota hybrid. Venza, NX, etc. they all mostly sound the same. Hybrids are fantastic for their fuel economy but you’re going to have to give up the power and smoothness of your V6. If you’re looking for a new car, I would maybe think about getting another ES350 or Camry before the V6 goes away. Or, if you want that same feel in an SUV, a low mileage, certified 2022 RX350 which also has the V6. Hope this helps!

I’m doubtful that we’ll see many changes before the mid cycle refresh as Honda has been so busy bringing out the new Accord and Pilot and they have the Prologue, Civic Hybrid, and I would guess a new Passport and Ridgeline on the way too. But with that said, I think it that they’re saving some of those features for the next RDX so as to create meaningful difference between the CR-V and RDX (which has always been quite an affordable premium car). I could see the next RDX starting around the same price as a nicely optioned Venza (low-40s) and undercutting the NX. Acura has always been really good about giving even their base models a ton of features for the price, like with the MDX there’s no real need to go for a top spec model.

Would it be possible to compare your NX and Rav4? More from an engineering, functionality and usability perspective ie. size, road noise, ride quality, build quality, manual door handles vs electric, runflats vs non-runflats, overall feel etc. I understand it’s not quite apples vs applies, but it’s close enough from an actual owner’s perspective to give insight on whether the NX is a decent enough upgrade over the Rav. Keep up the great content!!

I think the biggest difference is the refinement and for me I would not have been happy with a Rav just because it’s an economy car and outfitted like one. Well, keep in mind that the Venza is a Toyota hybrid. They don’t go fast and aren’t fun to drive, they exist solely for maximum efficiency. Got my 2023 Venza Limited in Celestial Black a month ago and it indeed is a great car for my needs. My car however does not have the plastic Shrouding on the inside of the door by the window you mentioned at 4:30 though. I think I've only seen it in the lighter color Venzas. Coming from RX350, where everything was completely covered up I do wish they put it in and was a little disappointed to find out mine doesn't have it.

Yes that’s quite a nice feature! It’s been a feature on many SUVs for the last 10 years or so. I believe Ford was one of the first to do that and my 2016 XC90 had that as well.

In serious mode to buy new car. I’m very intrigued about a PHEV. I mostly drive in my rural town less than 20 mi per day. Like to take road trips though. I don’t love the look (boxy) of RAV 4 Prime and Lexus 450h+ probably too expensive. Are either of those cars available in AZ without huge wait times and markups? Venza hybrid and CRV hybrid in the mix. I wish they were available in PHEV. I’m coming from an 07 RDX w/203K! Love this car and it will be hard to give up, except for abysmal mpg. Bummed that the Phoenix Car Show has been cancelled. I’d be curious about your updated thoughts on this video. Thanks!

Hello! To be honest, I think you’d be better off with a standard hybrid if fuel economy is the name of the game. PHEVs have gotten so expensive for what they are. We love our Rav Prime but we bought it with $10K of incentives and so the out of pocket cost came to $30K. I think now the base model starts around $43K with maybe $6,500 in incentives at the most. The NX450h+ is $60-$63K for a nicely optioned one and that’s just WAY too much for something based on the RAV4. Meanwhile, you can get a much bigger and or nicer standard hybrid car for the same price. I really like the Venza and new CR-V, since you’re coming from Acura, I’m assuming you’ll want something more premium. The other thing is that the RDX, Rav, and Venza are all getting a little long in the tooth so I do expect we’ll see updated versions of them in the next one to two years so if your current RDX can hang on, I’m not sure id buy anything right away. Specifically, I really hope Acura brings out a hybrid RDX for the next gen based on the current CR-V hybrid. I think that would be the one to beat.

Hello! I think I answered your same question on my other video but gone are the days of hybrids being slow pokes. They’re not fast but the electric motors give you a really nice boost of electric torque. I would definitely recommend you test drive them all if you can; if you can’t find a new Venza to test drive, find a used one. The NX has slightly more power than the Venza but I didn’t find the Venza to be lacking in power at all.

Haha you are too kind!! And thank you for watching!! I didn’t include the Rav because I don’t think it really competes with the NX. The only thing it shares with the NX is the underbody. The Rav is really utilitarian and feels like a Corolla inside where the Venza, NX, and loaded CRV feel a few grades above it. I would not have been happy with a Rav. And I know that for sure from us having the Prime. 😂 As for CR-V, at least here in the US I don’t think it’s overpriced at all (although I know in Canada it absolutely is), because it tops out right at $38K and that’s on par with a Rav XSE hybrid but you can’t get a moonroof, JBL on a Venza or Rav at that price, and you’re only getting softex in the Rav and Venza versus leather in the CR-V. Venza and Rav top out way above the CR-V in the mid to high forties when fully loaded, before destination and TTL. The CR-V also includes the better hybrid system and mechanical AWD which some will really like. BUT, you give up the premium technology features. In any case, once again you’re too kind and thank you again so much for watching and for commenting!!

Hello! I personally found the CR-V to be more refined overall because of the difference in the hybrid system (parallel in the Toyota vs serial in the CR-V). The CR-V feels more like an EV which is far smoother than the Toyota because the gas engine is being used as a generator. The Toyota feels like an ICE car and the A25A is a great engine but not terribly refined.

I have heard that Acura (which I love and drive) is not going hybrid but straight to bhev on the way to full electric. I would buy an RDX in a second if it had hybrid. I know the Lexus UX hybrid is small, but what is your opinion on it. Like the size (except for backseat) since I live in downtown urban area.

I actually don’t think Acura is doing anything with PHEV but rather going full electric with the ZDX (which is Passport sized). For them to build a PHEV they’d basically take the CR-V’s hybrid architecture and give it a bigger battery since the parallel hybrid system is perfectly designed for that. As for the UX, like you say, it’s small and I personally don’t like it at all. It’s not a bad car but it’s really a Corolla/CH-R hatchback masquerading as a crossover, so you don’t get the ground clearance or the interior height you get with the NX or most other crossovers. The eAWD System on the UX also only operates up to 43mph so it’s always only front wheel drive on the highway. I actually think the NX is perfect for urban areas; that’s why I bought mine because my office is in a crowded downtown core (plus I park it at the airport and at the shopping district in tiny parking structures). It’s not nearly as big as an RX nor is it too small like the UX and offers a good amount of cargo space for when you need it.

Hello! It’s basically the same. The Lexus might be a slight bit quieter but the noise on the highway but it’s not night and day. You’ll also get more noise and a rougher ride with bigger wheels and lower profile tires so my 20” wheels might make more noise and be louder than 18” wheels on a Venza. Honestly, the only reason you want the Lexus is for the badge and the better/bigger screen.

Keep your eye on the Japanese-market Harrier. Assuming our Venza continues to be based upon it, the Harrier seems to be getting changed a year or two before the Venza! The other great one that is supposedly coming to the US is the Crown Sport which I think looks SO good and should come with more powertrain options. Cheers!

Hello! I absolutely think the Venza is a great choice and I’ve heard dealers are discounting them in many places so that’s a huge plus IMO. It gets the latest Toyota infotainment system too, and so even though it’s being discontinued I don’t feel like it’s outdated in any way. Their crossover lineup is just too crowded for it to be necessary. The Outlander PHEV is great too, as long as you have a place to plug it in every night. Between the two, I’d go with the Venza just because of its price point.

I am looking at Value and Content I do agree with you that the Limited Version of the Venza does not make sense as 50k level is Bmw, Mercedes, Lexus.. .34k for the base I dont want leather unless ventilated and dont want a pano room for noise and leaks and creaks... do wish base had parking sensors hope to find one at Hertz also to rent for longer test drive. I am also considering the Base Grand Cherokee Laredo which with discounts can get close to 35k... Mpg, Size and reliability are my concerns there but looks wise I prefer over the Venza... have not considered the CRV not as much into its looks and larger size however the refinement is interesting factor have not considered.

Hello! Keep in mind that the Grand Cherokee is WAY bigger than the Venza and CR-V. It’s a whole class up and it’s actually on the large side of the midsize class. As for reliability, I wouldn’t bet my money on it. If that’s what you want, I would lease it and not buy it for the reasons that you won’t be responsible for any of the maintenance AND you’ll know exactly how much it’ll be worth at the end of the lease. The technology in FCA vehicles looks very impressive but in my experience is still rough around the edges and a bit glitchy.

Absolutely amazing informative video. Unfortunately I disagree with you on CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring driving experience. The car felt severely underpowered and that raspy engine felt like it’s trying way too hard. Because it was. I somehow found the venza 2.5L more capable than Honda's 1.6L because it is objectively bigger. We decided to go with the Venza for the added features for the same price like cooled seats HUD etc. Lexus is just way too overpriced for the brand name.

I think it depends on your lifestyle and where you plan to take the car (will you be way outside of civilization often, etc.?) and how comfortable you are using a patch kit. My NX doesnt have a spare either but I feel confident enough in being able to patch it and go on my way if needed. I’m also rarely that far from civilization. The Venza, at least here in the US, also doesn’t have a full size spare so although it’s better than nothing is still going to limit you to about 50mph and 80 miles. If that’s a major concern, I might skip both and go with a Rav4 or a Subaru Outback. From what I’ve seen and heard, both can hold a full size spare in their tire wells (unfortunately the outback can’t be had ask a hybrid, though).

Well done video. The only thing you didn't bring up in differences is the fact that Honda uses direct injection only which will take its toll on the valves eventually and how the Honda CVT is inferior to Toyotas ECVT. On the other hand I find that the road noise in my '24 Venza is quite loud. I never test drove the CRV but I suspect the interior cabin noise is less. Still though, I'll take the better engineering of Toyotas engine and transmission over what the Honda has. We know now that the Venza prime will never be but the Venza's replacement in the form of the Crown Signia is going to offer a better and more refined version of the Venza. Got to say though that we love our Venza XLE, a very nice car with premium attributes a its price point.

Thank you! I do want to add one point. The valve buildup with direct injection is one of those things that was a problem years ago but Honda has done their homework on it. That can also be mitigated with maintenance at the dealer. It’s worth noting that the A25A engine also has direct injection and runs on that most of the time (D4S does include port injection but is only used when the engine is running on its cleaning cycle, but the same could be happening in your engine too). Also, I don’t think Honda’s system is inferior, it’s just like you say, focused at different buyer wants. Smoother, quieter operation. None of the buzziness and drone from the Toyota engine. I ended up selling my NX for that reason I hated the way it drove. My daily driver is now our Rav4 Prime which we bought specifically because it gives us the Toyota Hybrid System without those downsides you mention of the non-plug in THS cars.

I totally agree, although I think they’re better than what’s in the NX because they should still work even if the screen were to go out where on the NX if the screen goes so does everything else. I did not. The Korean brands aren’t at a point yet where I feel comfortable investing in them. There isn’t the same guaranteed return on your investment with Kia like there is with Honda and Toyota. They’ve had so many engine issues, plus the whole “Kia boys” theft ring that’s made some insurance companies refuse to insure them at all (so that’s something very important to consider). And superficially, I’m not a fan of the fact that they change their design language every 3 weeks. Kia is better than Hyundai in this respect but even most Kias from 5 years ago look horribly out of date now.

Yes, it’s rather unfortunate that it’s not covered, but I think the assumption is that if you buy a luxury car you can afford to maintain it (I believe only BMW offers complimentary scheduled maintenance now). What I always do is buy a maintenance package when I buy the car which isn’t free but it is cheaper than paying for each service as they happen. Also, no company covers brakes under their complimentary maintenance programs.

I suppose so, but if you’re buying a car with more premium features you’re obviously buying a car with more potential for repair cost? And if you’re buying a premium car I’d hope you’d have the resources and be willing to spend on that. If not, I think that’s where the RAV4 and CR-V are great for those who don’t want to deal with the repair costs on premium features. I also think you’re more likely to get a mirror that’s extended smashed off, and I don’t think parking in a garage makes it any less vulnerable to damage; actually moreso since in garages cars are usually packed in closer together. Also, that’s one of the last things I would worry about in terms of repair bills given how much technology and how expensive other parts cars are these days. Radar sensors, screens, windshields, etc.

Not significantly. Though, you do get two years of free service with Toyota (though keep in mind toyota care is just for routine maintenance and doesn’t cover wear items). Beyond that, so much of maintenance costs depends on how greedy your dealers are. I’ve seen both Toyota and Lexus dealers jack up their labor rates because generally Toyota and Lexus owners can afford and will pay it. So best to investigate that as part of your research on the car!

Yeah, me and my dad's top choice is the CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid (we're Honda loyalists). The car's for my mom, and she doesn't really mind less technology, as she drives an older Accord. The reason we're not considering the Highlander is because my dad has a Pilot and we don't need another 3 row + Toyota markups are insane. I'm prioritizing back seat space in my research because we're a taller family, my dad's 6'2 and my mom's 5'6 so space is essential, and as a 13 year old, I'll still be getting taller so back seat space is definitely a necessity and that's why we're debating the CR-V. I definitely think maybe something with great tech and super good efficiency is the Tesla Model Y, as the back seat is spacious, plus it's like a gadget sort of like an iPhone, it's expensive but it's minimalistic.

Hello! I don’t think you should necessarily look to reviews from other countries as even the same product can be hugely different from one market to the next (like you say, the Harrier in your market is not offered with a hybrid). Likewise, without knowing exactly what hybrid system your local market CR-V hybrid uses it would be hard for me to say. In general, I always suggest hybrid over non-hybrid however hybrids come with a number of considerations in markets where you may not have the service network that we do here. That’s important as gas-only engines (especially Toyota’s basic engines) are generally easier to service should anything go wrong.

I believe that the CRV uses a GDI only engine. Without port injection the GDI only engine will eventually get carbon build up on the back of the intake valves. Another expense to clean $$$$$

It does, but regular maintenance and proper inspects will hopefully keep people from getting to that point. With regular maintenance, I would actually expect a lot of other things to go wrong before that on the CR-V (technology and other such expensive fixes).

I always take my cars to the dealer for service and if I was as concerned about this as you seem to be, I’d just have them specifically take a look every time it’s in when they do their multipoint inspection so that I always know where I stand. And if any little cleaning here and there needs to be done, pay for it so that I avoid any catastrophic failure and huge bill you mention in your original comment. I do this with other things I’m concerned with on our three cars. My 4Runner sits in the garage most of its life so I always have them check the fuel lines to make sure they’re not getting gummed up, for example. Last time it was in I had them flush the lines which wasn’t on the maintenance schedule but I wanted to do it anyway because it made me feel better about it.

You say that, but GM has had the most experience and success with EVs thus far and is doing a far better job with their EVs than Toyota or Nissan, so I think it was actually pretty smart of Honda to team up with them and have what is essentially a fourth generation product right out of the gate instead of toyota, Lexus, and Subaru flopping miserably with the Solterra/BZ4X/RZ and having to learn all the lessons for themselves. Their quality scores are actually quite good too per JD Power. People just tend to write them off because they’re domestic. The unfortunate thing about EVs in general is that at least right now, I don’t see any of them being feasible for long term ownership like your current Accord and my 4Runner. Technology and battery life is going to limit their lifespans.

Thank you! And thanks for watching! The Venza is also being discontinued at the end of the year. There’s a new model coming out called the Crown Signia. It’s a midsize rather than a compact but if the CR-V ends up being too small as well, that may be one to look at. Cheers!

Most cargo space in the compact class is the RAV4 by a long shot. Then next is CR-V, and then Venza/NX. Also, Venza Prime could come tomorrow or never. Likely not for 2024. Again, I think they’re feeling out the market. BUT, the BZ4X has totally flopped and if it continues to drag, I could see them ramping up Venza Prime production and bringing it over.

Yes! This was confirmed about a month ago and surprised me when they decided to, but it’s because the Crown Signia is coming and is more akin to the original venza (true, midsize two-row wagon-like crossover).

I dont understand maybe it because we sre in europe but the rav4 comes with leather power mirrors etc. That ssid we pay a lot more money for our rav4. We get the loner cars at service etc with toyota in fact there very little difference between buying a lexus to buying a toyota the only difference was the tea ceremony and the key box was rosewood wrapped in silk they toyota is s bamboo box in hand made paper. You get all the same customer sevice at toyota as lexus. It judt difference seating and covering but the service is same high standard. Lone cars etc . But every manufacture offer lone car at service that normal in the uk . Maybe customer service in usa is not so good. Actually i can say American cudtomer servicecis very poor compared to uk

Yes! Here in the US, we have a much broader/wider selection of models. So, for example, where Skoda is your entry level VW range, Toyota covers that here too. We do get the higher trim models you do too, though. So like you say, our Rav hybrid starts at a much lower price. This is also in part because Toyota and Lexus mainly focus on hybrid and EVs in Europe where here they do that plus a good deal of ICE-only vehicles. And then you end up with a much larger gap therefore between the Toyota and Lexus. And to your point about customer service, our dealer franchise model is very different than your retailer model in at least most parts of Europe too.

For the same price you can also get a Sorento Hybrid (6 seater), with similar tech and NVH. Albiet a bigger car.

You most certainly can, but I personally would not buy a Hyundai or Kia product and as this was a video about my top-3 choices, did not mention any of their offerings in this class.

Have been looking to replace my aging x3 2010 which drives fantastic but the yearly maintenance and gas is starting to bother me. Was looking at the rav4, venza and the nx350h. But I sat in the nx and the driver seat felt so cramped. Is that just me ? I have a big frame and am just short of 6 ft tall. In the rav 4 I felt great but I haven't had a chance to sit in a venza yet. Is it just me or did I not play with the seat settings enough on the nx ? Also I am worried I will miss driving a x3 even with the sports modes of the other cars.. Thoughts ?

Nope it’s not just you; Japanese compact crossovers are tight. I have a friend who’s not outside of normal proportions but is 6’3” and he can’t do the NX or RDX. The global cars are definitely designed for smaller people for sure. I’m 5’5” or so and I can put the seat all the way back in the travel and still reach the pedals so I don’t think it’s you not setting the seat right. Also, I totally feel you on the cost of maintenance of European cars but the way they drive. I’ve gone back and forth from euro luxury to American to Japanese and everyone brings something to the table but the Japanese don’t do handling unless you’re talking like an IS500 or an LC. Right now, we have three Japanese cars because these are cars I’m comfortable buying outright knowing they won’t bankrupt me but if leasing gets cheaper I’m definitely going to Porsche for a Macan or Cayenne to either lease or buy when the economy is more stable. Right now, I just don’t know if we’ll all be in for a year or two or a decade of pain so my mind says go the safe route on a Toyota. It’ll still be worth a ton if we end up riding out the recession and economic downturn in a year or two and at that point you could flip it for a lease on a German car (I wouldn’t buy those at all anymore with how much technology there is in them now).

You will definitely fill the same in a Venza. I am 5’0 and it’s perfect for me. A lot of complaints come from people hitting their heads on the passenger side. I think it’s a great car for the money. However I just traded my X3 a month ago and REALLY miss it and the drive. But you’re getting reliability with a Toyota product. I had a 2017 NX and felt cramped in there.. I do not feel that in the Venza.

The depreciation was horrible for me.. traded my 22 X3 for Venza was even trade 😡 lost $12k depreciation. That’s what sucks about the BMW.. but that drive.. people don’t understand till they drive one… especially a M sport!

I’d say it depends how tall they are. They’re all very comfortable but the CR-V and RAV4 have bigger back seats.

I agree, the Venza is a little too swoopy and sculptural in its current form for my liking, and agree the CR-V looks great, I just wish the top trim had more silver accents

Hello! I think it depends on when you want or need the car. You can get NX350hs pretty easily but Rav Primes you’re either going to be waiting a year or more for and or paying a mark up way above retail. Also, depending on where you live, the Rav Prime may not have any incentives and I don’t think it’s worth it if you can’t offset any of the price premium. You’re choosing between an economy car (that first came out in 2019) and a much nicer premium product with the Lexus that’s much more current (this NX came out in 2022). All that said, I’m working on a head to head comparison between our Rav Prime and our NX so stay tuned for that!
