Pixar has an actually insane track record when it comes to the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Since the category was introduced in 2001, they have the most wins for a studio with 11, AND the most nominations with 18. And, of course, many of these nominations and wins are deserved! Some others are very blatantly not deserved, and SOME… I have HOT TAKES about babyyyy. Today I wanna talk about EVERY single Pixar film ever nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, and determine WHICH of these were MOST deserved. Which were NOT deserved? Which were deserved but ya know, like, just barely.

Honestly, I think Finding Nemo has aged so well that it's mid 2010s 3D conversion where they took the original movie and rendered it in stereoscopic 3D, elevates the way the movie looks to another level. At points it felt like I was just watching a documentary about sea life, it was absolutely amazing and definitely something I would use to demonstrate 3D to someone

I have a real soft spot for Inside Out. It came out just as I dropped out of medical school due to health problems and hit a low part myself, it used the sort of psychological theorising I'd been fascinated by but am now sceptical of and it resembled my experiences moving house as a teenager and managed to loop the thread back between them. Obviously, that's not a reason to scoop an award, and Incredibles is up there too given my love of retrofuturist superhero settings, but still, a lot of these are hard to beat.

this is fascinating to me, because, and maybe this is because I was a little bit younger, but I HAAAATED this movie when it came out. I had also just moved and it felt so surface level to me that it felt like the difficulties I was having were like. being made fun of ? not that the film didn't take riley's angst seriously, but there was just something about it that had me like "this isn't cute". ... also I do think joy is a horribly unlikeable character to this day even though I know that's the point LOL

I remember having a lengthy discussion with a friend a few weeks before onward came out and i remember disctinctly complaining that it looked WAY too predictable and guessed what the ending would be with so much certainty i had convinced myself it was probably accurate and didn't bother watching it until much later(to anyone wondering i thought the movie would end with the time running out and dad disappearing but bc theyre in an ancient magic location, its indefinite and allows tom holland to meet and talk to his dad.) Suffice to say the ending very pleasantly subverted my expectations and surprised me. The idea that he never even knew his dad so his fixation on him was both innacurate to him and was hindering his time with the people in his family he DID know. I also really REALLY loved the performances. Tom hollands character (while i cant remember his name atm) feels super real and i forget its tom holland from time to time. And chris pratt too. Hes done quite a bit of voice work over the years but onward was his best movie(except the lego movie, but the whole joke is that hes the same protagonist in anything so gutting the guy who would become the face of that very thing adds a layer of irony to it, and of course both emmet and the other character are super expressive and upbeat and positive. Completely UNLIKE a certain italian-cuisine-loving cat)

Gonna have to agree to disagree with you on TS4. I don't think it's terrible, and you do bring up valid points about its themes and such, but the way it's executed just kinda rubs me the wrong way. Like, I know Bonnie is a kid, and kids don't prioritize the same things forever, but it still feels jarring after seeing her promise to take care of Woody, and hugging her immediately after getting her, and then not playing with him anymore after not that much time feels like it's passed. It would be a lot more easy to swallow if maybe Bonnie was about 3 or 4 years older than she was in the first episode. And I don't like the choice that Woody ended up making at the end of the film. I'm sorry, but to choose to spend the rest of your life with someone you're just now meeting up with after at least two years over the people you've NARROWLY ESCAPED DEATH with doesn't feel like a natural conclusion to me. It feels like undoing the ending of the last installment, which was a near-perfect way to end things. Adding to this is that Woody doesn't even spend enough time with the rest of his friends to feel like a proper goodbye. Like I just said, these toys have literally been to hell and back together. If you wanna break them up, you're gonna have to do a lot better than shoving them in an RV for the majority of the run time. But even so, this was a great video, and even though I have a few more disagreements, (Inside Out and Cars are my favorites of this lot.) you did a great job with this list.

Incredibles 2 is a movie that Brad Bird was probably forced to make. Beacuse his flop Tomorrowland from 2015. It's not a bad movie, but Brad Bird has probably problems to continue the story of the Incredibles. He says that he wants to make a Incredibles Sequel, when it has a reason. This reason was probably Disney and money

As a white guy in a relationship with a Korean woman (Korean culture being the inspiration for the Flame people) I really connected with Elemental on a personal level. I feel like that is a major prerequisite for truly connecting with the film in general, so I see why it wasn't received as well as other Pixar animations. Elemental, at its core, is a film about immigrants and the challenges they face in both leaving behind their old culture, and adopting new ones. Wade is an important character, but he gets left behind a bit in terms of the story's overall message. Probably for the better lol

Like of course andy was gonna grow up and never play with toys again at some point. But the fact that they both recognize the good and bad of the decision and respect eachother over it is why its so sad. I really like buzz and the fact that woody was not only his best friend, but literally the man who opened his eyes, juat makes it so kuch sweeter that he CONTINUES to open buzzs eyes to the bug picture and other pictures. They were the perfect duo bar none. A space man and a cowboy.

While this video is solely about Best Animated Feature, Pixar has a lot of great wins in other categories, in many cases it beating out live action films. They won best original song 3 times, first for the hilarious and heartwarming Monsters, Inc. song “If I Didn’t Have You,” then for Randy Newman’s very sweet “We Belong Together” from Toy 3, and most recently the beloved “Remember Me” from Coco. They also are stranger to Best Original Score, Soul winning in 2020, and in maybe one of the greatest Oscar wins in this category, Up won in 2009. And finally, in the only time an animated film has won outside of it’s own category or a music category, The Incredibles won Best Sound Editing, which is a frequent category where action films are recognized.

I care so much about Cars but all i'm gonna say is that Bessie was implied to be sentient in the post-credits where, like Lightning repairing the road and having asphalt drop on his 'headlight', Bessie does the exact same thing to the 4 Import Racers after they're arrested by Sheriff. May raise even more questions with how sentience works in a world of machines or it's just plain overthinking it, but I believe Bessie is sentient, just kind of a relic of past technology I'd gesture.

Idk, Monsters Inc is Aaaaaah Real monsters, with Pixar cuteness and a big budget. Thank you for adding the bit about Black protagonists as anything but Black or people… I still have animosity about Princess T.

Definitely WALL-E has its not just one of their greatest animated films, it’s one of the greatest films period. The film is still amazing nearly half a decade later with how it takes a lot of inspiration from silent films in just letting the motions of the characters tell their actions and progress the story while also including a cautionary environmental message that is not only still relevant in these times, but give an eerie warning that this could legitimately possibly happen in the future. Plus, its induction into the prestigious National Film Registry and its release on Blu-Ray and DVD as part of the Criterion Collection VALIDATES its win and many of those that argue Kung Fu Panda should’ve won really need to accept the truth that WALL-E deserved its win and is just a more powerfully emotional and world relevant film than the latter.

The more I think about it as I watch this, the more I realize that I don't really like Pixar anymore. There are some I do love (TS2, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Up), but overall I think I've just outgrown them as a studio. I don't feel compelled to go back and rewatch them like I do with movies from Ghibli or older Disney movies, or other studios. But I love all the short films they produce, so go figure.

1:12:24 I think Pixar and espacially Disney want to make more sequels to make the shareholders happy. The Pixar sequel era was the profitable era of Pixar and the pandemic/disney+ era was the loss-making for Pixar and Disney. Even if isn't the fault of Pixar and more of Disney's streaming course. I would be consequences and it concerns mostly the false things

I think what ties these films together is there abilities to take risks and talk about complex ideas. Even adults ideas at times. But throughout it all, they take just the rate amount of risk and put the trust where it needs to be. Modern Disney Pixar Is losing these trades day by day they're cold, corporate, untrusting. They don't take risks and never in a million years would they trust their audience. Everything needs to be said with word vomit. We need new political ideas that can only be said and never shown in practice. And forgetting the everyday problems they used to talk about the everyday problems real people go through and that make sense. The ends don't always justify the means, be careful what you wish for. And that it doesn't matter who or what you are, you can be anything as long as you're willing to put in the work. These are ideas repeatedly stomped on. By modern films. And it's ultimately tiring to know we live in a world like this.

I feel Pixar and Disney have robed so many TALENTED artist, and films they time in the spot light, I absolutely agree Pixar deserved many of his wins, for sure, Incredibles, Ratatouille, yes well deserved wins......but BRAVE....SOUL....Toy Story 4, not only took away from films that already where BETTER in those nominations, but so of ones that never even got the nom, films like YOUR NAME, SILENT VOICE that yes maybe didn't where in years than Pixar won, but if wasn't Pixar was DISNEY winning and that alone pissed me very off, I will forever stand that as much I love Inside Out, or When Marnie was there or YOUR NAME or A SILENT VOICE should have been the winners but Marie loss and Your name and Silent Voice never got that recognition or the nomination, and that never going to seat well with me, and In years like Toy Story 4 and Soul where more deserved films that where better like Wolfwalker, Klaus and HTTYD 3, but naaa have to be Disney or Pixar, I'm so happy that at the very least the last 2 years Disney and Pixar have not robbed better films of their deserve wins, and no I not want they never win something, I hope when they do is because they are the very BEST they can be, not because they are the ones that the critics always choose no matter who else is nominated.

Monsters U was so good and it being one of the first of a bunch of sequels in a row REALLY hurt it’s reputation imo. I love that story so much and as someone who is neurodivergent Mike’s character arc in that movie REALLY hits for me. Anyone who sees this and didn’t care for Monsters University PLEASE give it a second chance it deserves it.
