Everyone knows the basics of the American Revolution: thirteen North American colonies revolted against British rule and won their independence. But there’s much more to the story: the American Revolution, of all revolutions, was a game-changer for the entire world. How so? And most importantly, why? Renowned historian Allen Guelzo explains.

Script:
“The birthday of a new world is at hand.”
That was what Thomas Paine, the fiery pamphleteer, wrote in 1776, as thirteen of Great Britain’s North American colonies rose in revolt against British rule and declared themselves a newly-independent nation.
The American Revolution was something the world had never seen-politically…economically…and diplomatically. Let’s look at all three.
First, the politics.
Revolutions themselves were not new, of course. Britain put itself through not one, but two revolutions in the 17th century. Other countries in Europe endured similar upheavals.
These rebellions shared one of two goals: replace the current monarch with another one or extort new protections and privileges from the existing regime.
In stark contrast, the Americans did not propose merely overthrowing a monarchy. They proposed ending the very idea of monarchy as a worthwhile form of government.
In America, the citizen-not the government or the king-would hold the keys to power. With this overturning of the old way of doing things, the rebels made the political systems of Europe look as antiquated and irrational as fully as Newton’s laws had made medieval physics look antiquated and irrational.
As it was with politics, so it was with economics.
Tearing up the old order meant more than just refusing to take political orders from kings, dukes and princes. It meant taking no economic orders from them, either. In a society of free and equal citizens, Americans would follow their own economic initiative. They would be as free economically as they were politically.
This small-government model meant the state was to interfere as little as possible in the citizen’s life. Americans founded the only country ever to be based on the principle of restraining the government. And that unleashed such dynamic economic growth, it took America from a fledgling state to a world power in just fifty years.
A child born in 1776 could live to see canal systems link waterways from New York to New Orleans, see the electrical telegraph leap across unheard-of distances in communications, and the steamboat and railroad move passengers and freight at fractions of the cost imposed by horse and wagon.
.
The sheer novelty of the revolution’s first two legs-the political and the economic-was so great that many Americans, such as Yale president Timothy Dwight, expressed a desire not merely to remake the North American continent, but the rest of world as well. America, Dwight wrote in a popular poem of the time, was destined to “Hush the tumult of war, and give peace to the world.”
But the Founders rejected this view. Far from any desire to share America’s redemptive culture, the Founders tendency was to regard the rest of the world as a potential threat-eager to strangle the American experiment, either by the re-imposition of empire or by association with more unstable attempts at revolution, as in France.
The American position regarding foreign interventions was articulated by then-Secretary of State John Quincy Adams in 1821: “Wherever the standard of freedom and independence has been . . . unfurled, there will [America’s] heart, her benedictions, and her prayers be. . . . But she goes not abroad in search of monsters to destroy.”
Of course, the United States has not always lived by this attitude. America has allowed itself to be pulled into foreign adventures, of which the Founders would have disapproved. Nor has the United States always lived up to its best ideals. It has, at various times, seen unfettered commerce turn into monopoly and corruption. And we’ve had to deal with the terrible shame of slavery and its long aftermath.

I agree with Mr. Prager on that. However, this idea that in 1776 a new nation was founded is totally a Federal supremacy premise. Nowhere in our founding documents do they ever say that. The purpose that is said is because it denies that the Federal government ever required the states to ratify the Constitution to come into being. If the Feds were started in 1776 then they predate the states. But if they came into being in 1788 with the ratification of the Constitution then that would mean that the states predate the Feds and that would mean that the Feds were formed by the states delegating certain powers of theirs to the Federal government, which is literally what happened. The only reason to say that the founders founded a "new nation" in 1776 is to deny that the states are free and independent like the Constitution says we are. People who say that we are a nation formed in 1776 are either ignorant and just repeating flowering words or they are denying the ratification process of the Constitution. Either way, that phrase is a phrase of Federal supremacy.

@@thefreeman8791 While it is true that the Constitution wasn't ratified until 1787 it is also true that in 1776 by creating and signing the Declaration of Independence the 13 colonies stopped fighting for the rights of Englishmen and resolved to create a new country. Our first attempt at self government were the articles of confederation. This (states first federal government a distant 2nd) approach proved to be a disaster and so a more balanced sharing of power between the states and the federal government was tried. Still fearful of a central government the founders put strong limits on the federal government. Those limits or safeguards are slowly being eroded. I fear that within my children's lifetime being an American will mean nothing at all.

Not only that, the american revolutionaries under General George Washington became an organized and effective force. The Continental Army was the first force to use actual rifles on the battlefield, with the marksmen targeting british officials and leave the british troops without leadership on the battle. From all angles the American Revolution was a trully unique movement.
@alexgramm5170
@alexgramm5170 4 жыл бұрын
Well, here we go, this is inevitable with all comments.The Continental army as a whole did not use rifles. They used primarily the smoothbore musket, either actual British muskets called the Brown Bess or French muskets such as the Charleville. Other muskets they used were made in the colonies patterned after these two, as well as other unique models. However ,there were rifle companies and battalions that used weapons with their bore rifled ,which is a spiraled groove thru the length of the barrel. Now it is true that officers were targeted and the rifle companies were mainly responsible for this with the increased accuracy of their weapons. Of course men who grew up with guns were no slouches with the smoothbore musket either as far as that weapon allowed.

Max Wylde geez you sound like an english sympathizer that time traveled from 1776. You think the document that established our personal freedoms, and then led to the greatest period of economic, political, and personal growth the world has ever seen was shoddy? You wouldn’t even be typing in this thread on KZbin were it not for that document. And to your point about Catholics in America. Why don’t you ask yourself why MOST Americans didn’t like Catholics, not just the founders. Because the tyrannical crown and Catholic Church didn’t line up with the idea of religious freedom. Which by the way was granted in that supposed “shoddy” document we call the Declaration of Independence. So, everyone had religious freedoms from that point forward.

Ben Howell Be careful. These videos are highly revisionist along contemporary right-wing lines. For instance, at the founding of the US, there was a bourgeois elite that enshrined in law the prerequisites of a fully “free” “citizen”. It did not simply mean individuals free from government. Citizen had a particularly meaning. A citizen for the Founders was NOT an enslaved person form Africa. A citizen did not have full economic and political rights based on an ideal of liberty, but based on property. Those who did not own property were not included in the political body of citizens. Additionally, women were NOT citizens in this sense. Furthermore the idea that a “restrained government” led to economic growth in the US is highly misleading and just inaccurate. The government heavily intervened in the economy, putting up tariffs, expelling natives from productive land, and constructing the infrastructure to promote trade. The “infant industry” as Hamilton put it needed to be protected not by a restrained government but active and interventionist government. These oversights by PragerU demonstrates the ideological agenda of the organization. Please be careful when watching them. They are highly distorted.

I assure you, any government formed is open to question. Someone, somewhere (usually many someones, in fact) will declare your authority illegitimate. Often rightly so. No piece of land in the history of mankind was acquired through 100% peaceful actions. Every where you sit is land that was taken by someone before them and someone before them and on and on. And that's the point. We can play this game all day of what was legitimate and what wasn't. It should be obvious by now that that's in the eyes of the beholder.

In the early days of the U.S.A. 1777 to 1789, was a time I would liked to have lived in. The writing of the Articles of Confederation that were eventually approved by all 13 states in 1781. Also known as the first Constitution, and reading about the pro and cons of the people of that time concerning the Articles was an insight into the early days of America I had never heard about. The years between 1777 and 1789 not everyone agreed on how this new United States of America would be governed. Those who called themselves Federalist sought after a stronger Central government, and those who sought after a stronger State government, were call the Anti-Federalist by those who were the Federalist. Reading about this period and up to the Bill of Rights ratification 2 years after the Constitution was ratified. I thought I knew about the early days of our Country, I was very much mistaken. There are quite a few books out there you can learn from, on how the people of that time thought about how to now goveren themselves.

It deeply disappoints me just how many of the people I either knew when I was younger or went to school with no longer think this way, instead paying homage to the idea of socialized economy and supporting the idea giving the government the ability to tell everyone just how much their work is worth at the end of the day. But people always seem to want to forget the rule that if you don't work, you don't eat. (Unless of course you steal money to eat food through the system as a politician like Burnie Sanders has done for so long). Work is the only universal currency, and turning away from the very wise ideals of freedom, liberty and independence that our ancestors helped bring to fruition in history is not just foolish, but also extremely self-destructive and deeply saddening to me. That being said however, this video is contrarily very encouraging and I look forward to seeing just how America will prosper under 4 more years with a president who agrees that freedom (since it is not free at all) should ALWAYS be fought for, even if some fools don't think they will need it and decide to slander his name. God bless you PragerU!❤🙏

Well said Mr. Kemp! Alexander Fraser Tytler's take was; “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.” Yes everyone it's now time to get on the "bondage" train to Hell! Satan's Democrats and Leftists are counting on it! Alexander Fraser Tytler how did he know back in 1716? A Lib might? say, "It's about The History,...Stupid".

Funny how when Europeans do it, it's "extorting new protections and privileges", but when Americans do it, it's "truly revolutionary". Talk about bias lol. Also, like it or not the Americans revolution is a derivative of the French revolution. The US founding fathers harbored nearly the same ideas as Montesquieu, Rousseau or Voltaire (mostly out of virtue of living in the same time and circumstances), and screaming hysterically that europe bad isn't going to change that. You'd also think that if only 'murica had been so great and special, Europe would be a third world area by now, and yet Europe progressed at about the same pace as the US after the revolution. A honest historian would look at why that is, but this channel mostly serves to indoctrinate Americans to never question their existing regime.

@@LKtube1 I guarantee you that America becoming a superpower fast has nothing to do with some super duper special sauce that America has. And of course the fact that European countries have been around since literally forever, so your comparison is kinda cheating to begin with. Try to apply this logic to other countries. I can answer that. One of the things so revolutionary about the American Revolution was it was the first time a European colony stood up to their colonial masters. And I would disagree when we went overseas we were helping weaker countries fight against evil countries which is the right thing to do. And God blessed us for it. Now we're so self-centered it's sick, even most Republicans take up the lefts talking points on this. Thirdly, just recognizing our foundation as a nation is not going to help. the slide to the left is so great that our days are numbered. Only true Christian revival can stop the slide. only Jesus Christ in your heart will change a person's selfish motives and sin.

@Max Wylde name one monarchy in history that did not steal power & money from its citizens. In fact the opposite is true they kille their own people that going on now with China, Sudan, lot of European countries are sacrificing their own citizens for multiculturalism, Islamic Jihad. .. Not even caring if they get raped or killed; Germany, Sweden, parts of England..come on get with it. The US has three branches of government the legislative the judicial and executive, and that's exactly what Isaiah 33:22 is. that's where they got it from. A three-pronged government is way better than a two prong or one. You're never going to get a fair monarchy until Jesus comes back who is the Prince of Peace you're never going to have peace on this Earth till then. Jesus said you'll never out give to the poor, He said the poor will be with you always so you'll never be able to subsidize lazy, slothful people .not all of them of that way but people will fall in line to be that way. Also tell me how's this country going to economically run and feed all its citizens under a monarchy. By using free enterprise which is what the US invented. entrepreneurship is taken away in a monarchy. Yeah right multiculturalism let's make peace with absolute Savages like MS-13 and Jihadi Muslims you must be out of it. And only way to be in heaven & not being in hell is to have a relationship with Jesus Christ otherwise you will not see the millennial Reign where He reigns on Earth. You will be in hell for all eternity

But for those of you willing to listen... please, please, please... don't let anyone destroy the freedom and rights that made America great. You guys are like a lighthouse in a world of darkness. If you could see for a second what it means to live in a country where the government has taken over your life, you'd understand. And it's not just Venezuela I'm talking about. Europe is going down a terrible spiral of oppression. You guys might not realize that when you come to visit, but when you live and work here you can easily tell we're digging our own graves. In 50 years the effects of these pernicious European policies we'll be obvious and the American system will shine again. Trust me, it will happen. Just like in the 60s a lot of self-proclaimed intellectuals supported communism as an economic system and it collapsed under its own weight, now a lot of people are supporting SWJ and socialism ideals. But those ideas don't work and will collapse. You just have to stop them long enough so that it becomes self-evident. Freedom of speech, personal responsibility, rule of law, separation of powers... those aren't just punchlines. Those are the keys to your children and your childrens' children future. I wish I could have a green card to move to the US right away. I would like my children to have a better future. I'm starting my own business and hopefully will make enough money to move to the US in the next couple of years. Ohh and BTW... I'll move to the US, LE-GA-LLY. Wish me luck!

What blows my mind about the American Revolution is that, at the end of it all, we appointed a military general at the head of the nation's government, and he did nothing to try and seize or grow his own power. It is astonishing that a person, who devoted much of their life in an extreme hierarchy, to a system where the commands come from the top down, was able to be such an effective leader in the government. One only has to look at any recent dictatorship to see that giving the reins to a military official, especially in a new democracy, is generally a recipe for disaster.
