The Sixteen Kingdoms period of Chinese history is also less commonly known as the Sixteen States and was another period of chaotic history which ran from the year 304 through to 439 when northern China fragmented into numerous short-lived dynastic states.

The majority of those states were founded by the ‘Five Barbarians,’ non-Han peoples that had settled in what is now northern and western China during the preceding centuries and had launched a series of rebellions against the Western Jin dynasty in the early part of the fourth century.

However, other states had been founded by Han people, and they all, whether ruled by Xiongnu, Xianbei, Di, Jie, Qiang, Han, or others adopted Han-style dynastic names. These sixteen states often fought against one another as well as the later Eastern Jin dynasty which succeeded the Western Jin in 317 and ruled southern China.

The period of the Sixteen Kingdoms ended with the reunification of northern China in 439 by the Northern Wei, a dynasty established by the Tuoba, a Xianbei clan. This reunification occurred some nineteen years after the collapse of the Eastern Jin in 420 with the Liu Song dynasty controlling the former Eastern Jin territory. Following the unification in the north by the Northern Wei, the period known as the Northern and Southern dynasties began.
