Got your poker night video recommended to me by the algorithm a couple hours ago and I've now watched all your vids. Very informative, well edited and paced with interesting topics. Massive Sonic fan myself so it was great to see his expressiveness in the early days get some recognition. It's a shame that he would become more stiff after Unleashed and Generations with the exception being Mania. Frontiers is at least a step in the right direction (in terms of animations). Truly his personality has always been shown through his in game animations. Impatient, cocky and free spirited. PS: Subscribed and waiting for your video about experience points. I think creating a series that explains videogame etymology is a great idea if you have the time for it. Personally interested in the word console. Otherwise keep up the great work!

the xp video has turned out to be harder than i thought it would be! a lot of the etymology of games links back to the creation of dnd where there are lots of varied accounts of what /actually/ happened. stay tuned though, it'll happen!

I randomly stumbled on your channel a couple days ago and have since watched every video, and they're all fantastic and somehow manage to hit most of the ideas I enjoy usually! They've got some pretty good editing and writing, and I really do hope your channel gets the attention it deserves. Cheers!

One of my favorite idle animations comes from Chrono Trigger, specifically in the overworld. Despite being like 2 total pixels, all of the playable characters have identifiable idle animations, such as Crono doing an exercise routine or Lucca reading a book. Such a minor detail, but it's where players will be idle more than anywhere else besides the pause menu.

The first idle animation I noticed was on Boulder Dash on the C64 (1984) where Rockford would blink his eyes and tap his foot.
@LambdaMiscellaneous Жыл бұрын
so sonic's?
@meikkon_ Жыл бұрын
this one slipped past my radar but wishing i'd seen it before - great find! later entries into the series also seem to use similar idles. as a maze-puzzle game, i suppose rockford will spend a lot of time waiting around while the player plots out a route, so it makes sense to add one.
@Rothron Жыл бұрын
@@meikkon_ Yes, the enemies move in predictable patterns that sometimes make you wait for them. Also there is a slime that can grow and if you manage to box it in so it cannot expand, it'll turn into diamonds. That will have you waiting for a while, especially if you use yourself as part of the wall.

Im gonna comment to help this video in the algorithm, but also to say im very surprised mega man in the NES (1986) isnt here!! he had an idle animation way before sonic, his eyes would blink if you stop moving for a while, that is well known.
@meikkon_ Жыл бұрын
yikes, bad miss from me there. his idle blink doesn't tell us much about him, but paired with the rest of his animations, he's arguably just as (if not more) expressive than sonic!

Interesting topic. I do remember quite a few NES games with idles but now that I think about it all of them came out in 1991 or later (Power Blade 2, TMNT III, Cliffhanger etc.). Battletoads technically does predate Sonic 1 by mere weeks and it had simple blinking animation which might not count but even then I can't recall any other games that were earlier than this. Knowing that Sonic was the one who made a trend of idle animations (even though he wasn't THE first to do them) is pretty mind blowing, not gonna lie.
@Diwasho Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, Adventure Island and its sequel both had idle animations well before Sonic 1, you could say Higgins' idle jog is quite iconic in its own right. But I guess you can make a distinction for idle animations that start playing only if you don't move the character for a few moments and Higgins has none of those while Sonic does.
@meikkon_ Жыл бұрын
adventure island slipped past my radar, not going to lie. but it is a very interesting one - i mean it definitely counts as an idle animation since he's moving and you're not doing anything! you're right though, it's not very distinctive. since it still involves his legs it's a bit confusing; looks like he could still be on the move even with the controller down. nice finds!
@Diwasho Жыл бұрын
@@meikkon_ Nevertheless, I still think Sonic 1 was the main catalyst of idles spreading to many other games like you said. It seems to be the first major system seller to do this so naturally the industry took note of its innovations whereas small and more obscure titles didn't leave as strong of an impact, just like Android Nim that first introduced idle animations.

they are cute robots, aren't they? android nim as a game is probably worthy of it's own video, honestly. as are all of leo's works - super cool for the time. the stories i hear told of him give a great insight into what the computing revolution was like in the late 70s/early 80s. youtuber Tea Leaves has already done a great job of documenting his contributions. you should watch his video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZTOZIyAps-Xh5o but if you're in the mood for more android nim content, i would recommend watching Stu's video which i have listed in the description. 10 whole minutes of android nim, and more games after! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpi9dnhmi76tn80
