I just realized that the 30 Years' War was started by some guys falling into a pile of waste. Wow. That's great.

Information and indoctrination through religion or media is a pillar of power, though religion is far more powerful, people are not allowed to question word of god. You know what happens if they did... even today in some places.

A little correction. The picture at 01:50 is a Prague New Town hall, the place of second (much more bloody) defenestration at 1483. The beginning of thirty years' war - third Prague defenestration at 1618 happened from Ludwig wing of old royal palace on Prague castle. Three deputies were thrown out of a window, from second floor -none of them died, one injured his head by hiting lower floor stone window ledge. Angels and manure pile are just ways to glorify or dishonour victims. There is Garden on the Ramparts under Ludwig wing nowdays, build on previous fortification ramparts of Prague castel. Terrain under Ludwig wing was pretty steep and non maintained at the beginning of 17th century. The bodies did not hit flat surface, but steep side of a ditch covered with rotten foliage....much like ski jumpers. Several pistol shots were fired from the window on fleeing victims, non of them hit. So, maybe angels at least crossed fingers for them :) commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Ludwig_Wing#/media/File:Pra%C5%BEsk%C3%BD_hrad,_Star%C3%BD_kr%C3%A1lovsk%C3%BD_pal%C3%A1c,_Ludv%C3%ADkovo_k%C5%99%C3%ADdlo_01.jpg

Three points: 1) The Holy Roman Emperor was at this time, also King of Spain. An important reason for the decision of the French to join (or rather subsidize) the Protestant side. 2) One of the emissaries from the Emperor in Prague 1618 wasn't a nobleman. He was knighted under the name of Hohenfall (High Fall). 3) The principle implemented, that the ruler of every country decides about the religion - and in the end any internal matter - of the country, is what today makes it so hard for the International Community (read UN) to intervene against tyrannical dictators.

Thirty Years War was the greatest disaster for the German people until WWII. The war was fought all over German speaking lands and killed a third of the population. Some areas were reduced by 50%. Given as a major reason that Germany didn't unitify until 1871

Pro tip. Wars are never actually fought over religion, but it's really hard to get Joe Random to fight to extend someone else's power. Just like the farmers in Braveheart said.

I grew up in Brandenburg, which is a region of Germany that knew some of the fiercest battles of the war. The fields are still littered with artifacts and the farmers all have their little stashes of cannon balls and musket "rounds", which they found while plowing. In Brandenburg the Swedes were pretty active and finally defeated a large Imperial host at the battle of Wittstock, which has a beautfiul museum comemorating the battle efforts of both sides. Brandenburg is a protestant region. I found it funny that you mention the different accounts of why the emissaries survived the defenestration. In all the history books I had to teach me the story of the pile of manure is written as fact. It also entered public consciousnes. Nobody questions it and everyone know about it, which I think, is one of the more innocent exaggerations of historic writings :)

Every individual is driven by an often complex web of motivations. When decisions are made by multiple people, the magnitude of that web can and often does grow exponentially. Thus, the would-be student of history, when speaking of absolutes about the causes of individual actions, makes a mockery of history and a fool of themselves.

It is quite plausible the emissaries when thrown from the tower landed in manure which absorbed their impact enough to save them. Horse and oxen were used by the hundreds and thousands in those centuries and the curb of streets were piled high with manure until they could be loaded onto wagons and removed. It’s one of the reasons diseases were so rampant in those times before they understood the causes of disease. This disgusting pollution problem is one of the inspirations for the automobile in order to rid cities of the thousands of animals that contributed to the huge manure problem. I believe you can actually find photos of NYC depicting how bad this problem was. Anyhow, hard to know if that’s what saved the emissaries from their fall but it’s plausible. Enjoyed your video. Expand on how the treaty set up modern Europe and the troubles of the 19th and 20th centuries that you eluded to but never described. Thanks.

Well, we were told that the emissaries survived mostly thanks to the angle of the walls they were falling by, basically it turned into a rather painful slope - they were thrown by the Castle walls, which were classically not 90° with the ground. Im sorry if i am not making any sense, but im from Czechia and the history teachers use this explanation. Thanks for the vid! :)

You left out the most important aspect of the treaty: The people who did not consent to the religion of their region were provided a grace period in which to migrate to a region supporting their religion. This "vote with your feet" paradigm of religious freedom is a far more effective means of stabilizing polities than "democracy" or even "republics".
