There WERE mobile phones BEFORE cellular, (going back to the 1940s!) But they were VERY LIMITED (Like a handful of subscribers in a given city). Few frequencies were available, And one might have had to wait an half hour to "get a line". Cellular radio technology changed the game by allowing multiple users to share frequencies, Making mobile phones much more reliable, available and easier to use, (and eventually cheaper!) Things started to get "real cheap" in the late 1990's when analog cellular gave way to digital cellular. Today it's CHEAPER to have a cellphone than a LANDLINE! Stuffing the concept of the PDA into a cellphone led to the "smartphone".

Why have a smartphone in the thumbnail? It's like if you made a video about the first car and using a modern EV or something in the thumbnail. It's so incredibly dumb.
