The eighties we're the second round of techno music. Some of you forgot during the 70s were a lot of techno. They just had the better equipment then. When they stopped using it,.. is when the music began to die for me. Still have the albums though! 🤓💯💥

As a teen in the 80s, there was NOTHING like living in that decade. I loved the 70s, but the 80s were awesome, too. The music, style, movies, television, and everything was amazing. I vividly recall sitting in front of the TV, watching snow on the screen, excitedly anticipating the premiere of MTV, back when they played nothing but music videos. It's was EPIC!

We were the first on our block to get cable, and then MTV the year it premiered in 1981. I LIVED for MTV and loved all the original DJs. The Real World seemed so amazing at the time, the first reality TV I ever saw, but then reality shows kind of took over. When I first heard the Bowling for Soup song 1985, and the lyric "Springsteen, Madonna, way before Nirvana there was U2 and Blondie and music still on MTV" I unexpectedly felt a huge lump in my throat.

He's considered one of the pioneers of using synthesizers. He's actually in the HOF for it. In the 1990s, Dolby founded Beatnik, a Silicon Valley software company whose technology was used to play internet music and later polyphonic ringtones, including the Nokia tune. He was also the music director for the TED Conference. On the faculty at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University since 2014, Dolby leads Peabody's Music for New Media program, which enrolled its first students in the fall of 2018.

First seen, if I'm not mistaken, in the popular science programme on ITV Don't Ask Me presented by Labour MP Austin Mitchell. Though I would say the 70s had a higher quality of music overall, there was a magical few years in the early to mid 80s where we were still getting new Classic Rock (before the glam hair bands made caricatures of if), great Pop / Top 40, great R&B and wonderful new sounds from the British New Wave. All melding on MTV. It was so good.

It's poetry in Motion! I can smell the chemicals! SCIENCE!! lol I'm so glad that yall watched the video! New wave videos were usually very quirky and funny. lol. I remember this group and their videos as a kid during the '80s. GenX! They were a good new wave, synthpop, post-punk, group. They were '80s and early '90s. See their other weird, humorous videos like "Hyperactive!", "Europa and the Pirate Twins", "Airhead", "I Love You Goodbye". Yall are right, new wave was typically light hearted, fun odd, goofy, funny, cool, funky beats (bass guitars), dance music, . Think of it as punk rock mixed with reggae/ska, disco, techno. lol They were similar to other new wave groups like Madness, Talking Heads, XTC, M, Oingo Boingo, B-52s, etc Thomas Dolby wife (actress Kathleen Beller) is gorgeous BTW, they had kids together.

Interesting connection for Amber: Dolby originally wrote "Hyperactive!" for Michael Jackson. They were recording albums in the same studio at the time and ended up talking a lot about beats and synths and whatnot. Michael asked if Dolby had any songs that he might be interested in. Dolby put together "Hyperactive!" and sent it to Michael. Apparently, MJ's response was silence followed by "I like the drums." Dolby says that, by that time, he was in love with the song anyway and decided to do it himself.

Thomas Dolby is a genius, not only musically but as an engineer. The tech that was created so music could be downloaded on one's cell phone? Thomas Dolby INVENTED that. This song was his only big hit in the US, but he's got so many others - touching on many genres - that you should check out to get a fuller picture of what he's capable of. "Hyperactive!" is a frenetic upbeat trip, "I Love You Goodbye" is a bluesy love song, and "Close But No Cigar" is a rousing rock song (with guest guitarist Eddie Van Halen!). "Budapest by Blimp" is a nostalgic orchestral journey, and "Airhead" is a bit of snarky fun. You can't go wrong with Thomas Dolby.

In the video, that's British scientist Magnus Pyke saying, "Science!" repeatedly. He's the English equivalent of Mr. Science, or Bill Nye the science guy - which makes more sense if you realize who it is. I'm from the '50s, '60s, '70s, but really got off on the '80s - such a huge amount of experimentation with sound going on, it was THE MULTI-MEDIA RENAISSANCE with music, TV, film, etc. But even acts from the '60s got a re-birth in the '80s (Moody Blues, Yes, etc, etc.). Tom Robertson used the stage name Thomas Dolby after the stereo technology (Dolby I and Dolby II). He was an internet inventor and currently music and tech professor.

One of the cool bits to this song (and the video) was the older fellow interjecting "Science!". That was Magnus Pyke, a well known scientist and presenter on British TV. Dolby asked him if he could record a couple of words for the track, and he came up with all the ad-libs.

Dolby spoke of his early musical experiences in a 2012 interview: I sang in a choir when I was 10 or 11, and learned to sightread single lines, but other than that I don't have a formal education. I picked up the guitar initially, playing folk tunes-Dylan-then I graduated to piano when I got interested in jazz, listening to people like Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, and so on. The first electronic instruments started to become accessible in the mid-70s, and I got my hands on a kit built synthesizer and never looked back. Dolby is associated with the new wave movement of the early 1980s, a form of pop music incorporating electronic instruments, but Dolby's work covers a wide range of musical styles and moods distinct from the high-energy pop sound of his few, better-known commercial successes. In 1981, Thomas Dolby played the main synth parts in Foreigner's power ballad 'Waiting For A Girl Like You'. I've always liked the dude, he was clever as hell. His synth lines were awesome to me. I own four of his albums The Golden Age of Wireless The Flat Earth Aliens Ate My Buick Astronauts & Heretics Golden Age of Wireless and The Flat Earth are probably my two favorite, but there's some good tracks on the others as well.

Thomas Dolby (real last name: Robinson) was born into an academic family in the UK. He traveled a lot, as his father worked as an archaeologist. Thomas Dolby learned to play guitar, and the piano. He started making music with synthesizers when they became more affordable in the late-1970s. Early in his music career, Dolby wrote a modest hit song for American-born British New Wave singer Lene Lovich, entitled "New Toy", and toured with Lovich's band in 1980 and 1981. After the tour, Thomas Dolby embarked upon a solo music career (although he would work with Lovich occasionally in the recording studio). Two other hit songs/music videos that Thomas Dolby had here in the US are "Europa And The Pirate Twins" and "Radio Silence". At Live Aid, Dolby played synthesizers with David Bowie's band. For almost a decade, Thomas Dolby has been working as a music professor at Johns Hopkins University, in Maryland. Thomas Dolby is 63 years old.

Thomas Dolby was New Wave. It was great being an 80's kid turning 12 in 1980 and 21 in 1989, it was the best time to be alive and listening to music on the radio, and to see music videos get their start in 1981 with the advent of MTV. Along with Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" and Herby Hancock's "Rocket", Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science" was one of the MOST PLAYED High School Marching Band songs back in the 1980s even into the 1990s at Pep Rallies and Games! New Wave songs tended to be Heavy with Synthesizers and blended with Jazz & Rock and you knew them when you heard them, and they were some of the greatest Ear Candy to Listen to, especially the Thomspon Twins, The Cars, Human League, Depeche Mode, ABC, Pet Shop Boys, Talk, Talk, Talk, Spandau Ballet, and Tears for Fears to name a few without naming all!

I know that some '80s videos tend to throw you and have thrown me, but this one tells a story that's pretty easy to understand. Jordan had his eyes closed a lot, again, and some of the missed scenes were helpful in explaining what the story was about. I think it's cool that Thomas Dolby, a real inventor (made it possible for sounds/ringtones to be added to phones) portrays a scientist along with other "scientists" and their ideas that drove them insane.

That's a common misnomer. Dolby sound was invented by Raymond Dolby, not Thomas Dolby. Thomas Dolby is his stage name. His real name is Thomas Morgan Robertson. Dolby was a nickname given to him by friends and colleagues before he hit it big because of his affinity for music gadgets, synthesizers, and technology. He then used Dolby as his professional name. Dolby Laboratories famously sued him for copyright infringement; however, it was later settled out of court, and he was allowed to keep using it as his stage name.

So experimentation was a big part of the music scene. that is when music and digital sounds came together. Trust me it was hella exciting to see all these new computer generated sounds and gadgets. Kind of new, in some ways. 1930's had a few inroads, but the first big pop song, to feature a synthesized sound was Del Shannon - "Runaway". The BBC sci-fi show, "Doctor Who", really, placed synth sounds where a broader audience could be exposed to them. Yeah, the 80's had a certain saturation with synths, and this tune is quintessential, in that approach.
