Umbara was a sign that the Galactic Republic was already the Empire as it used its military might to crush a former ally of the Republic, and the conflict was fought by Clone Troopers against the natives of the planet who sought to leave a corrupt government that couldn’t defend their senator.

True, but their reasoning for the battle is far more reasonable than what would happen under the Empire. As stated, Umbara becoming a Separatist world would cut off Republic planets. This probably happened on a larger scale at the start of the Clone Wars with planets on both sides getting surrounded when their neighbors chose differently then they did. Mandalore is a good neutral example of this. It chose neutrality and thus supply lines with Republic and Separatist worlds were cut off, leading to a rise in the black market on Mandalore. The Separatists honestly must have launched similar attacks because of Separatist planets surrounded by Republic worlds. And I can imagine the Republic panicking when since the only way to get to Kamino was by passing Rishi, a planet in the Abrion Sector that mostly seceded to the Separatists due to the Republic being a bad customer for their agriculture. Rishi stayed loyal to the Republic, but if it fell, Kamino would be lost. It’s certainly quite the grey zone as even if planets on all sides had good reasons for their decisions, the astrography of their sector would possibly mean another planet that has made its own reasonable choice to side with the opposing faction might get cut off and surrounded. It’s basically waging war on one planet saves another.

Another detail is that Palpatine likely intended it to be a CIS/Umbaran victory since he sent an order to pull Anakin out early into the battle while the Republic held the advantage. Meanwhile, the other main battle where Palpatine put out an order intended to keep his future Apprentice alive was at the end of Jabiim.

Another crtical battle? 2nd Battle of Geonosis: - this would have added a completely new front in a previously secured region - a massive drain on space resources to contain them, which would have easily halted all other fronts - there were no troops ready for a invasion there - due to it being thought secure - meaning they had to rush an attack - as a droid foundry with lots of metals on hand, the place would have been reinforcing itself every minute they did not attack. So no chance to wait it out and siege them down - between shields and underground building the factories were pretty much immune from orbital bombardment. So there go the easy solutions even without a enemy space presence - and that was before they even knew of the *supertanks* which themself were a war winning super weapon

I agree with your take on Battle of Umbara. I want to say though the next battles up or if Battle Umbara is in number one top place for key/important battles. IMO, Battle of Kamino is 2nd, The Second Battle of Geonosis would be 3rd or arguably second. My 4th pick would be First Battle of Sarapin or basically all of Sev'rance Tann's conflict taking control of the Republic's key super weapon known as a Decimators and then making some of the core worlds vulnerable.

The blockade and battle of naboo, and palpatine's election as supreme chancellor, were the first true steps towards the fall of the republic and the jedi, and the rise of the galactic empire. Dooku once said to anakin, naboo was where the war really started and that the sith controlled everything and that he just didn't know it. Obviously the clone wars would not officially brake out until 22 BBY. But naboo was the turning point that led to the battle of geonosis and all the other battles.

I'd say the biggest and most obvious lynch pin of the clone wars was the first battle of Geonosis with the republic failing to decisively destroy the CIS forces when they had total space suppority but instead allowed their escape and to spread to other systems and allowed the war to actually exist. Anything after is a result of that failing.

I thought the CIS had space suppority and ground numbers to win that battle, Republic didn't even have venators or a few while the CIS fleet was a beast. They could've destroyed the republic forces with ease and caputred or killed the jedi, but Palpatine ordered Dooku to retreat and pull out so that the Clone Wars could happen. If Dooku realized and didn't decided to be Palpatine apprentice and take control this he could wipe out the jedi or capture them then rush to blockade coursant and kill palpatine. I think a different YouTUber gave light on this perspective but yeah Republic won Geonosis because Dooku ordered the retreat, "There are too many" lying to CIS leaders in the room. If both armies stayed and an all out fight broke out the repbulic fleet would've crumbled leaving CIS ships to bombard planet where republic forces were. Droids would killed and captured jedi and some clones. CIS victory.

When you say important there are many factors to consider. One could argue Duro was the most important since because of its fall due to mismanagement of resources by the Senate, Palpatine was able to use that as an excuse to gain more power and be able to legally completely dictate the war effort, which led to the Republic harnessing it's industrial complex to it's fullest leading to stopping Ooperatoon Durges Lance and beginning the Outer Rim Sieges that ended the war. Also, I didn't know Umbara happened before Durge's Lance. That's intersting.

The fact that they invaded a planet because it suddenly switched sides after they failed to protect their senator shows a lot about how "good" the Republic really was. Operations Durge's Lance was a game changer for the CIS, however, due to plot armor, it was pushed back. I love seeing General Grevious do those things (as horrid as the entire operation was), because it shows how smart and strong he REALLY was and WHY he was feared!

It's not the most important in terms of the war itself, but I think the most important battle for the fate of the entire galaxy, was The Battle of Coruscant: It was a literal last hurrah for the Republic, to spike nationalism and militarism in its citizens that Palpatine could take advantage of. Palpatine could've very easily died, had the wrong ship blown up, or a major accident happened, averting everything he planned, but it didn't happen It was Anakin's ultimate victory, grooming him to be at Palpatine's side and the Republic/Empire's enforcer

Umbaran technology does seem to be a lot more refined and customized, akin to the starships of Naboo. Is it necessarily more advanced? Maybe in a few respects but I suspect that Lucasfilms' narrative is that the Umbarans had wargear that was sleeker, far more ergonomic to Umbaran phsyiology, and simply different from what the clone troopers had become accustomed to in the massive copy-pasta that were the CIS ground forces. The Republic's clones did, at the end of the day (so to speak), adapt to those differences and were even able to quickly learn how to operate a few examples of Umbaran equipment.

Ah yes, the battle where the Republic went full grimdark. Burning Geonosians alive is not a war crime, of course, that's just pest-extermination. Was the clone wars really just 3 years though? I keep thinking it was 5. It seems so short a time for such a massive conflict. Not just in scale, but in regards to all the new ships and weapons which were first developed, then put into production, then leaving the assembly line and going to the front line. Just developing the Victory star destroyer seems like it should take more than 3 years from prototype to being ready, even if it was pushed into service. And what about Clone reinforcements? If a Kamino-clone takes 10 years to grow, they must have started to grow several batches of 200 000-a million clones even after the, what, 6 milion strong full Clone Army was deployed some time after Battle of Geonosis? Like when Obi-Wan visits Kamino in Attack of the Clones, they had the clones which reached maturity for the start of the war, but then they also must have had clones with 1-3 years left of their growth-cycle at that time, and who would have been ready to go in the middle of the war? I know Sparta-clones answer this in legends with them just taking 1 year to grow, but I always found them to be a bit too... deus ex machina, ya know? I think the Kamaino-clones strike a nice balance where they are difficult and time-consuming enough to grow for it to matter a bit more.

Spartii clones can go nuts more easily & lack quality, but numbers have a certain value. Clone numbers & reinforcements are confusing. I like to think that Sifo Diyas placed his order, then Palpatine place further orders for his war & orders for his Empire. Of course in war he got a hold of Spartii cylinders & later changed his mind about Clones, but thats how I patch holes.

Well, Dooku was absent an apprentice after Savage Oppress and it would only be later in the war Quinlan Vos would join him as a secret assassin. So Dooku possibly would take him as a Sith apprentice. The thing is that Palpatine would just order Dooku to kill Krell if he got too dangerous and since Dooku doesn’t have the same connection to Krell as he did to Ventress, there wouldn’t be as much hesitation. Now what if Krell found out about the whole plan? He said so himself he rather be on the winning side, not dragged down with the Republic and the Jedi. His best shot would be surviving the Clone Wars and convincing Palpatine to make him an Inquisitor.

They were assigned based on needs of the army your average Trooper received the same flash education training program some were selected when they'd show above average skills and intelligence to serve as ARC Troopers, NCO's and Officer's. Units like the Clone Commandos were specifically trained from birth for their roles.

I dunno... I'm thinking that L'Antillies on the Perlemian would have served far better as a lynchpin to Kashyyk, via the "Randon Run" spacelane. Even the Ootmian Pabol run to Terr'Skiar would have worked as well to approach Kashyyk and other Mytaranor Sector systems. Had Umbara itself contained an invaluable resource then I can see the cost perhaps being met but with two far less hazardous back doors to the Kashyyk sector being available, I think they could have gone around easily enough. Sure, we made have missed out on a great story (including the justified execution of Krell) but I don't think the Clones would have objected... :)

Why exactly are planets along a hyperspace route so important? Do ships need to drop back into realspace at each planet? Otherwise, can't they simply just stay in hyperspace and just bypass the whole thing?

Perhaps the concern was of these hyper lanes having ships or mines blocking the way. As the High Republic comics and the Last Jedi have shown, you can’t just go through something in hyperspace. Placing such a blockade keeps ships from blasting right by.

@@tristankawatsuma8962 Airfields (or rather, ground based space ports) just house fighters, shuttles and some freighters. They don't house or make ships, or make anything. Ground based factories also don't make ships; they may make fighters, small freighters and shuttles, components and some other smallish stuff, but that's it. Such things can either be bombarded from space or blockaded from space. Anything capable of making ships will be somewhere in that solar system, in which case they can be captured, destroyed or somehow disabled or cut off from resupply, which would render them useless. Any inhabital planet, while potentially useful in itself, isn't necessarily needed in order to control the system itself. Assuming, of course, the system as a whole is the objective for whatever reason rather than the planet itself.

Even if I can say the ground forces can improvise, at most they would probably make factories to build star fighters and small ships, not anything big enough to take on a fleet of warships. How about ground-based emplacements? Those can cause trouble for the fleet and space stations they build.

Seeing how this was all one HUGE rigged casino game with the Clones meant to win in the end an then some of them probably literally stab the Jedi in the literal back. Even IF they'd lost here Sideous probably woulda had back up plans on top of backup plans or orchestrated some WAY bigger and CRITICAL loss for the Separatists that'd made them not want to or unable to press a major offensive somehow. Just like when Grevious tried that attack on Coruscant that turned out to be a MASSIVE GAR trap an MASSIVE counterattack waiting to happen
