You lose around 20% of your power when using the a/c, causing you to use more throttle which equals more gas wasted. Cars are designed in wind tunnels to increase aerodynamic efficiency, but mostly at speed with the windows up. Windows down creates drag at speed, decreasing efficiency. To get the best mpg, only use a/c when up to speed in your top gear with the windows up. Around town in lots of stop and go traffic at low to medium speeds, turn off the a/c so you don’t use more throttle and roll down the windows. Also, as a side note, your windshield defroster/defogger uses the a/c compressor, so use it sparingly when not on the highway or at speed.

The compressor is turning regardless. You're just turning the ac or heat on. It's called a serpentine belt.

@@shanehoward585isn’t the compressor clutched though. Like yea the pully is spinning but there is not load on it. When you turn the ax on then the compressor engages.

Both either or and with the AC on and the windows down double the amount of gas used but highway speed not city driving..that's the right question.and I say both because a lot of people love to drive with the AC on and the windows down that's just putting too much strain on the ac system and is just not the proper thing to due..ac is meant for a closed area not with the windows open all around that area you're trying to cool down.

The 55 mph test used a computer to estimate fuel efficiency based on air intake, not actual fuel consumption, and showed A/C was more efficient. The 45 mph test consisted of running the tank until it was empty, and showed open windows were more efficient. * Because the original tests were inconclusive, this myth was revisited in episode 38, in which it is found that air conditioning is more fuel-efficient when the car is traveling approximately 50 mph or more. At slower speeds, windows are more fuel-efficient.

If i remember correctly it depends on a lot of factors here. it is a really complicated thing and i am no scientist so take what i say with a grain of salt. If you are just driving around town 45 MPH or lower with consistent starts and stops it is better to have the windows down. The efficiency of the AC goes down at low speeds. Once you get more into high way speeds 55-70 and likely not to stop having the AC going is working more efficiently and it is better to have it on with windows up. Once you get around 65 though you start hitting diminish returns. At 70+ unless you have a hybrid that is very efficient it is better to have the windows down again. Of course speeds and efficiency will vary between make model and year.

Wrong. The windows being down caused drag increasing the amount of work needed by the engine to move against it. Running the ac causes you to burn more electricity, also making your engine work harder to keep up. There are no free rides. The actual answer is the windows are less gas at lower speeds but more at higher speeds.
