Stu Rutherford is a real life tech guy who often works on Taika's films (you can thank him for the stunning cinematic Valkyrie scene in thor ragnarok). Majority of his scenes in this movie were basically the cast improvising and dragging him into scenarios lol

He clearly does good work, then. Even in this, it's not easy to get a good light balance while still making the scene look genuinely dark, let alone do it when it's shot like a documentary. Even with the full moon scene with the park lamps, the sharp light/dark contrasts looked realistic. And the lighting in the "horror" scene with Nick being chased through the house, in particular; very well done.

Each character is inspired by a different style of fictional vampire adaptation. Viago is the romanticized 'Interview with the Vampire', Vlad takes after Gary Oldman in 'Bram Stoker's Dracula', Deacon is influenced by 'The Lost Boys' and Petyr is essentially old school Nosferatu. And I guess Nick would be Twilight? lol

@@ArunaUtd He actually wasn't. Bram Stoker knew next to nothing about Vlad the Impaler. All he knew about was the name "Dracula" (which he was led to believe was a name that meant 'Devil' and was given to any Wallachian ruler with a reputation for courage, cunning, or cruelty) and that he had a battle once where he crossed the Danube to fight the Turks, a battle he was forced to retreat from. Heck, he didn't even know Vlad the Impaler's actual name because the book he sourced for Romanian history didn't include it. It incorrectly referred to both Vlad the Impaler's father Vlad Dracul and the Impaler himself as "Voivode Dracula." Count Dracula, in the novel's history, was a Dracula from a later age than Vlad who did the same thing Vlad did, only he kept coming until he was out of soldiers and he ultimately won.

48:33 that whole convo with the werewolves in the woods was improvised. It was filmed at 3am and Rhys (the alpha) was tired and whatnot, so Taika and Jemaine asked the werewolves to just ANNOY the living shit out of Rhys, to bombard him with stupid questions, so the reactions were all genuine💀

Since you guys seem to really like the 'backpack' scene, if you watch closely you can actually see Deacon as a bat fly into Nick's bag, so what you see later is Deacon mid-transforming back into human form while still in the bag 😂

I love the French dub version of that movie. They work so hard and it makes it even more funny. They purposely made a bad dub to have the same feeling you have when watching a dubbed documentary. They also choose voice actors that are known for parody or that looked exactly like the actual actor so the voice is perfect. They included private jokes and Easter eggs of previous work the voice actors did and it fit the story. They also changed localisations and names so that the identity and some jokes are not lost on local audiences (for example they are not in Wellington but Limoges, Stu is Gilles,... ). For those who watched a dubbed version, how was it in your country?

I watched the tráiler in castillian spanish, the dub is terrible. The characters have no accent (wich is important part of the characters) and Deacon and Vladislav sound like thugs. It's not funny at all. The french seemed to understand better the task 😂

In Italian is also funny because their added or modified jokes that were funnier than the original version. Taika Waititi's characther voice was a bit off (they needed to choose a different voice actor) but the rest was okay.

I'm so glad you guys watched this! It's hilarious. I love the low budget mockumentary style but the cast improv just takes it up a notch. The only time I got scared was when we got introduced to Peter and he hissed at Viago, I jumped when he jumped lol. Peter really did have a cool design and I kinda find it funny he just turns everyone he bites lol. The guys seemed to take care of him giving him non-human meals. But I loved all the characters really, they all brought something different.

@4:34 I think this is my favorite interpretation of the whole "stake through the heart" thing, where it immobilizes them rather than destroys them. It feels closer to all the various burial superstitions that used to exist, where these supposed weaknesses were later derived. "Vampire burials" had a bunch of variations, but hit on certain things we still associate with the folklore... One of the most common practices, where the idea of a stake through the heart comes from, is actually from the practice of driving a large metal through the buried body in its tomb. It wasn't assumed to be a full solution or result in destruction, the expectation was that it would pin the body in place if it reanimated. Another common practice that is barely mentioned is cementing a harvesting sickle blade over the neck, the idea being that if it came back and struggled, it could potentially cut off its own head. Sometimes canine teeth were removed, and sometimes a piece of brick was shoved into the mouth.

I love how they inccorporated all the mythos and rumors surrounding vampire lore. Also the TV show is an easy recommendation. One of my favorite shows of all time. It starts similar to the movie but quickly dirverges and has done some insane stuff. Also, the 2 oblivious cops, Officers Minogue and O'Leary, have a spinoff show called Wellington Paranormal where the two basically go around Wellington and investigate/solve different paranormal events in the same benign and oblivious manner.
