Hi there! Liron here, and in today's episode of Painting Masters I'll share with you work by John Singer Sargent.
🎨 I'M NOT AN OIL PAINTER, BUT... 🎨
Sargent's work REALLY inspires me to paint, draw, sketch and improve my skills.
I am striving for a very similar result, only in watercolor.
As I don't do oils, I'll not analyze his artworks at the level of technique, but rather at a more general art / painting level.

Sargent was trained in the alla prima method. His portraits are brilliant. He tired of the formal portrait and took pleasure in watercolor which he never sold but if you were a close friend or as a wedding gift he would give them as gifts. Sargents work is as good as it gets. Seeing them close up was a religious experience for me.

First seeing Sargents paintings in the Seattle Art Museum years ago made me want to try to acquire the light he puts in every painting. I think seeing the originals has really steered me to my goal of painting well - not there yet of course. Thanks for showing

Look at Sargents eyes in his self portrait. His left on the shadow side is in light while the light side eye is in shadow. Just amazing !

He and Winslow homer are my heroes. I went to an exhibit in Philadelphia I’d homer and Sargent work. It was such an experience to see Sargent watercolors up close. Just how bold and loose up close but precise and laser accurate from a far. It was unreal. They had their materials there too. Winslow’s box and Sargent tube set up. It was incredible. I was also thinking about doing a video on Sargent in my watercolor tutorial channel. Great work, as always, Liron.

I went to a Homer exhibit and it was just of his etchings. They were great but I also love his water colors. One of my favorites.

Sue Salley cool! They had some etchings too. The focus was Homer, Sargent and Eakins watercolors. One day I would love to go. Is it homers studio in Maine. I went to Andrew Wyeths museum/house and studio in chads ford PA- it was so beautiful.

Gail Check awesome!!! I snuck pictures of their boxes and tubes haha I know we weren’t supposed to ;) that room comparing Sargent and homer paintings side by side was just life changing for me.

Swordofdamocles602 I did too! :) my favorite was the sketchbook section. I loved seeing Thomas Moran’s sketchbook where he made pencil drawings and hand written notations in color. It was real astounding to see Sargent and Homer watercolors side by side and see their interpretations and how they handled atmosphere. Breath-taking. I do! I have a channel for teaching watercolor and gouache and whatever other painting concepts that come to mind.

I love the realism that dissolves into more simple marks when you get close. I remember looking at a large photo of one of Monet's Lilly paintings. There is a bright yellow green shrub on the left that looks realistic, yet it is just jabs of paint when you get close.

I really like that you reviewed Singer Sargent’s art as a whole rather than only focusing on his watercolor paintings. However, by dividing the attention and focusing more on his oils, I feel you missed out on a lot of information about his watercolor works. The fact he used opaque white paint and saved the white of the paper to exaggerate highlights (i.e. the alligators and the canal water), are very unique characteristics and unusual for watercolor artists of the time. Singer Sargent was certainly an extraordinary artist in both mediums! I really enjoy this series! I like how you casually talk about the artist’s artwork, your impressions, and what you as an artist feel you can take out of their artwork and interpret/incorporate into your own. Thanks for the video!

I like the new set up. at this time didn't most artists just use water colors to test their colors and composition before doing the oils, thinking it an inferior medium? I think Sargent might have been one of the few to do water colors for the sake of doing a finished painting.

Liron, really enjoyed your personal rendition of Sargent. You make well on your points about values and his drawing skills. His drawing skills were superb as his watercolurs showed, as you noticed as well. When it came to values. Remember Duran (his teacher) emphasized the importance of the half tone. He had an eye like a hawk for half tones. Which then made the rest of painting easier. After the half tints were in place, he put in only the essential details.

Claude Monet seems to be painting Constable's 'The Haywain'! And to be facing OUTwards from the scene, Sargent's composition is certainly surprising, almost like a snapshot in time

Liron, this is a great move for your channel. I always enjoy watching you work your magic with the water colors, but these videos showing the work of the 'Masters' is a great move. I appreciate your comments on each painting. I do want to see you do this more in the future. Stefan Bauman from the "Grand View" has produced over 100 videos that spans more than 50 hours of viewing. I have viewed each hour of each video because he stresses the basics and theories around painting. A few show him painting,, but many hours are lecture information. Just as Mark in Draw, Mix, and Paint, may demonstrate a few painting techniques, his strength is in the information that he shares. Great work Liron, keep it up.

So inspiring to hear your interpretation and observations of master works. I noticed that many people have commented they would like to hear your impression of the watercolors of Sargent. I saw those watercolors at the Brooklyn Museum on special exhibit several years ago with my artist cousins, and would love to revisit them with you. At that time I wasn't studying watercolor myself, but now I am and am learning a lot from your videos. Thanks!

New setup is technically good. Go watch some of the twitch gamers/artists and look at their layouts and frames in general. There’s definitely something cool you could do there. if you want help working that out let me know, I’m not a streamer myself but I’ve definitely spent a heap of time as a viewer. I think the bottom left is the wrong spot for the camera too, and it’s probably worth investing time in trimming the camera input down. I assume you’re using OBS? It’s pretty good based on the little mucking around I’ve done with video.

What's really bizarre in first 'daughters" painting are the PAIRS. Not classic one, three, five.... but pairs of objects. Two vases front, two vases behind, two windows, two forefront girls, two background girls. Hm. Very odd but it works. Hm. Any thoughts anyone? .. Good observations Liron. Spot on. Note* Mme. X is HUGE! Its at the Norton Simon in California. Stunning in person! His self portrait is BRILLIANT, utterly brilliant. He is an artist's artist. Wow. Breathtaking.

Hi Leron, thanks for covering John Singer Sargent, but just like another person commented, his watercolors are soo good and exceptional that I don't understand you did not cover them more extensively. I saw the exhibit in Boston a few years ago and what he did with watercolor is absolutely amazing, I can't think of a contemporary artist who reaches his level. He also spent a lot of time in Italy and in the middle east where he did several watercolors. The museum of fine arts Boston created a catalog with many of his watercolors, maybe it can still be found second hand

Hi Liron. Great review of J.S.Sargent. Would love if you would do one just of his watercolors. Also, regarding the new format, when you had the image of the gondoliers on the screen, because your second screen was in the bottom left corner, the cursor you said you were using to point out the technique could not be seen. Hi Liron. I love this style of painting too. Impressionists in general. You want comments on the video. The quality is good, also when zoomed in or out. The audio is good too. Knowing you did this as a test, I understand you wanted to try out having you talking in the corner ... but ... I would prefer to see only the painting you talk about. I'm not interested to see you when I look at the painting. In fact I did not look at you then, I only was aware a corner of the painting was missing.

Sargent is one of my my all-time favorite artists.It's true, he achieved most of his fame and income from portraits, but in my view, he was as much a landscape virtuoso- there was nothing he could not handle. In his catalog, there are some 2,000 paintings, and about 700 charcoals drawings! (This from the Ormond Plein-Air podcast- a great listen). I must take issue with a comment you make often- that is: a 'randomness' in brushstrokes or marks. If you have seen his deft, astonishing, charcoal drawings, you can see that there is never any 'random' anything, and this holds true for all his paintings and watercolors as well. Every mark and stroke has purpose and effect- he know exactly what to do, and did just that. kentiessenart.com

Haha I totally agree! I think there’s a type of randomness that can be learned. It’s very purposeful and nothing is in excess- but it also avoids patterns and unnatural or artificial look 😉 But that may be a philosophical discussion haha. I do however wholeheartedly agree regarding landscape vs portraits. I personally find landscapes more impressive at times, as there’s a lot more to take into consideration (though to be honest - his portraits are almost never just the face, there’s often a scene around the figures). Such an inspiring artist he is!

Sargent was extremely gifted- I think it is more instinct, talent, and experience- an brilliant ability to describe each thing with the right amount of information to carry the painting- no more, no less, but never random.

Please accept just some concrete suggestions: The first thing they teach you about an analysis of any kind is never to use " I, me, my...", but "He, him, it, the painter, the situation...." You are not the subject of interest but the analyst. Never say "I like it, I love it, ...." Just describe and say why, the causes. ....That´s just the first and basic thing you should change, Why? Just listent to it. Any average person notices your repetiton of "I like it ..I love it" After the first twenty times the listener wonders if the subject is Sargent, his style, his paintings..... or you, and your likings. The "I guess..." use makes things even worse. Another issue is the continous presence of your face and the scarce paintings, detailed close-ups, absence of details, even of a plan. But this is closely linked to the first one: the focus, the protagonist, the right words and not filler. Excuse me if this is not the kind of comment you were waiting for. You asked for sincere opinions. This piece of advice is both essential and backed by examples and evidence. It is meant to help and improve contents on youtube.

Haha, good question 😉 Who knows? If you read on Wikipedia, they describe it as his own modern form of realism. Impressionism at that time seemed to have been much farther than realism than it seems to be today, at least in some cases.
