think it's harsh to say Guehi wouldn't lace his boots, a lot of Toon fans turning on him just cos the deal didn't get done - he's still a top player. Schar is definitely stronger in some areas but Guehi has pace and age on his side, so he could learn a lot more and get even better...love Schar though - just wish he was like 5 years younger! Lost some of his peak years under Bruce sadly.

Getting results when we're not playing well is something that we've failed to do in the previous two seasons. Games haven't been an easy watch (although we controlled things today until they scored) but four wins and a draw from our first five games is pretty amazing. (Best start to a season since 95/96 🤯). Alice, you're right about Newcastle's midfield. Its depth is underrated. And you're right about Allan Saint-Maximin v Harvey Barnes. ASM could be as mesmerizing as Ginola or Robert, but Barnes doesn't only provide beautiful goals -- and his are surely above average in quality -- he provides winning goals. My 18yo son is still rhapsodizing his performance against West Ham last season, bless him.

A right back's nightmare. Getting turned inside out by Anthony Gordon for an hour. Probably picking up a yellow cos you've got to stop him somehow. Then on jogs a hungry, fit & fresh-legged Harvey Barnes to take over from him. Yikes. When we're able to field a similar threat down the right and stretch teams, then gaps will open up through the middle, the likes of Tonali & Bruno will shine, and Isak will be the absolute goal machine we already know he is. At the moment, we are badly one-sided. Murphy/Longstaff simply aren't consistently good enough. It's no fault of theirs, they just aren't. This makes it pretty easy for opponents to set up against us. They only have one flank to worry about. We BADLY need a right winger. A Gordon or Barnes (ideally both) for the opposite side of the pitch. Then finally we will start to look a bit more like the finished article. I must say, as a Newcastle fan, I DETEST seeing us hoofing long balls to the corner flag & clinging on with ten minutes + injury time left to go. It reeks of desperation. A properly good side would be popping the ball around, retaining possession & making the opposition run themselves ragged chasing shadows. We (Newcastle) are a very, very long way from that still. We ride our luck bigtime to win these games. Should you be worried? Nah, we haven't played anyone good yet. Spurs included. When we do we'll be found out quick, in my opinion. Still, not complaining... Points on the board not to be sniffed at. Love Barnes. Love the desire, passion & workrate. Just wish they did the basics a bit better too.

Nice assessment. I do wonder what the plan is re: accommodating both Gordon and Barnes on the left side. I understand a lot of fans with the lack of a new RW signing want to see them both out there, but that clearly isn't the long-term plan. With Gordon's ever-present fitness record and quality, I can't imagine him being happy not to start ever, particularly in a non-European season with only one game a week. BUT they bought Gordon in Jan 23, and Barnes the following summer, so maybe they have a plan I don't expect? Also, I really hope Joe Willock can stay fit. He's so useful whether starting or off the bench and he's sadly missed so much football in the past year.

Eddie Howe always keeps 1 or 2 game changers (attacking midfield/forwards) on the bench (injuries allowing), he always wants to do this to change the game in his favour if things are not going well. Everyone argues just play your best 11 from the start and control the game from start to finish, fair argument but unless you are City or Arsenal then that is difficult to do in the premier league. Newcastle will get better with more goals but counter attacking on the transition they will get found out at the back as there is no pace in CB position at the moment. Should have walked at £55m for Guehi, Euros inflated price, won't be worth more than £35m by the end of the season and there is better out there.

I don't think I disagree with anything you say here. Great start in terms of results. Performances have been poor for the majority of time though. I thought the first 20 minutes v Wolves was the best we've played so far this season but it didn't last and Wolves were countering us with ease at some points. It can go either way: Either it shows the toughness and togetherness of the squad and performances eventually come and we look great whilst getting good results.... OR.... Performances stay at the same level and results eventually start matching them so we start to drop in the league. If it doesn't last then I'm still completely behind Howe (unless something drastic happens of course)- it's Mitchell that should be on the line. If he messes up January like he ruined the summer then he's shown he is no where near up to the job. If we really only started looking at Angel Gomes AFTER his England debut then he's pathetic. We should be going for a player like that BEFORE he makes an international debut! It's embarrassing to be that reactionary as a scouting team. The CBs are my only real concern. Hopefully the rumours are true and Botman will be back in October but considering what the injury is and how it was mishandled last season I don't see that as likely.. Callum Wilson being back would be an incredible bonus- his goal to minutes played ratio is always superb. It's almost like we should've bought a CB and right winger in the summer......

We haven’t hit our top performances yet so winning ugly is how we are doing things right now however I still have a number of concerns. Defence looks shaky, popes keeping looks unconvincing and not as assured as in previous seasons. Set pieces are poor. Again never used our height advantage and our short corners are shocking so I’m not sure what we are doing at set pieces. I still think things behind the scenes aren’t right and our forward line is spluttering a bit. The quicker Gordon gets a goal to settle him down the better. Look it’s 3 points in the bag and it’s a massive positive to get results while not playing well and finally we have options to change things for once

As a Newcastle fan I'm surprised we have as many points as we have the performances have not been there so far. Part of me is wondering whether this an Eddie Howe masterstroke. We have possibly been too intense under Howe which has led to injuries. I'm wondering whether he has somehow hacked the team to win with the minimum output needed. Maybe its playing with fire but until we have a bigger squad maybe its the best way forward for us.

Toon fan here. We’re playing crap at the minute. We’ll get found out soon enough if we keep up these performances. Something not right at the club. Defense is shocking. On the flip side, if we do start to cook, then look out 👀. But it’s a big “if”.

Appreciate everything longstaff has done, but he cannot be the starter anymore. Literally silent yesterday I can’t remember him touching the ball

Howe still won’t start his strongest 11, or even play the lads in unfamiliar positions but wow, when the subs settled into the second half, was much better! We’ve picked up points where we have expected to, the hard work is coming up which will be a massive a test, 10 points so far is all that matters at this point.

I think he is still managing Willock after injury, and doesn’t want to over tire Tonali when he’s been off for so long. When fully fit and rested, those two will start.

as an NUFC fan I'm not getting carried away, yes we're getting results whilst playing poorly but that doesn't necessarily mean we will steamroll teams when we get up to speed - football can just be like that, fine margins - there'll be games we play really well and get nowt, it's cruel but you just have to be as consistent as possible in terms of results...playing how we are we'd get our arses handed to us by City/Arsenal/Liverpool for sure.

Remember when Pep said “we can not replace him” about Aguero that’s how I feel about Schar🤣 he’s so underrated, brings so much to the team.. £3m bargain he was!

100% those players don't grow on trees, good on the ball but also strong in the air and tough as nails - if he was quick, he'd have played for a much better team

From a Newcastle fan I’m happy with the points but I’m worried about a better team will punish us the way we’ve been playing

the teams newcastle have played this season so far they should be winning... regardless. we have 2 games which we should also be winning then lets see how we do against man city. only reason we are where we are because the teams we have beat have played worse than us.. when we come up against a team that WILL play better, then youl see just how bad we are. i honestly dont know what our problem is at the min we just cant seem to click. and i feel once we get smashed off man city then everything after that will be down hill.

Pre-seaso0n, I had a bet that the FINAL order would be 1-Arsenal; 2-Man City; 3-Newcastle; 4-Chelsea. Looks like Chelsea could let me down!.

Have yet to play well and here we are. Help's we have had such a soft schedule... Howe needs to get over his bromance with Longstaff and Murphy and start legitimate PL players like Tonali and Barnes... THEN see how we do against City and we can talk...Willock is too injury prone to rely on him starting. But he will become the super sub IF he can stay healthy...

Longstaff lost the ball for the Wolves counter-attack that resulted in the goal. He played a sloppy ball which was picked off. He's too inconsistent and unfortunately, its time to move him on or stick him on the bench. Great analysis, again.
