One tip for you: ditch the liquid detergent and get some Earth Breeze laundry sheets. They are 4x5 tissue-type sheets that take up very minimal room, dissolve in water and do a great job of cleaning. One small sheet does a large load of laundry, so if you are hand washing in a sink, you can cut a small portion from the sheet and save the rest. Lighter weight & no worry about liquids at the airport.
@SOSASATSUNRISE Жыл бұрын
That's such a great tip! Unfortunately, laundry sheets are hard to come by as you travel from place to place so you take what you can get. Usually we take a little detergent from where we are staying or buy the smallest amount possible and leave the rest behind. Even though the whole world has the same liquid restrictions in a plane as the US, travel sized anything is really hard to come by. Maybe we can have some family bring us some of those Earth Breeze sheets coming up? Thank you for watching!

Nice review!! Those 2 bags look fantastic and I actually have the Porter 46, but none of those (even the Farpoint 40 is too big) are carry-on size when traveling around Europe and in many low-cost airlines worldwide. So, those are good backpacks but I have found out that anything over 30-35 liters has to be checked when traveling on the cheap in short or regional flights and low-cost airlines. The older model of the Osprey Porter 30 (bigger than the newer model) is my choice now and I have not had any problems so far.

I once did over two weeks across France and Germany with just a personal item and it was possible because of carrying detergent! Just a tiny container for me but it meant i could take a day about halfway through the trip, wash everything one evening, and leave it on radiators overnight to dry and i was all set to go again!

this video is awesome. I am trying to design my own backpack for long-term travel. I agree that the power bank chargers are indispensable after trying to find McDonald’s to get Google maps and the chargers didn’t work. Ha ha. Last trip, which was about two weeks to go scuba diving in Malaysia, I took a big travel backpack. it was completely full. I realized that I had a lot of clothes and I was at a secondhand store to get a light soft shirt. The attendant offered to put my bag behind the desk while I was shopping and he said that the bag was so heavy that he could barely carry it. That really stuck with me and made me consider what I was traveling with. Everyone has different needs, but I realize that I was focused on having a lot of clothes that I didn’t need. I went to the park with the trashcan and put half of my clothes in the trash. It made no impact on my trip whatsoever, except to make my backpack lighter. This is not advice for you guys because you’re clearly more experienced travelers than I am. But if you are complaining about too heavy of a bag, I think you could make some significant edits. For example, the metal bottle could be replaced with a collapsible bottle. I’ve never used one, but I heard about it. Also, multiple jackets can be turned into one jacket, same with shoes. I actually prefer a umbrella to rain jacket from my style of travel, but it seems like you guys do a lot of nature stuff. also, I would consider sending full hard drives back to homebase or parents house. I’m also going to send my prescription scuba goggles. It’s not too much for someone to store for me. Also, I’m trying to get down to one pair of shoes in the end I think I want to minimize to a point where , maybe sometimes I do without but have a really clear idea of what’s in my pack and also have it not be a pain to lift. Anyway, thank you so much for the video. It’s amazing.

I guess that this is only relevant to certain countries or airlines as certainly here in the UK there is no way that you would be allowed bags that size as carry on with most airlines sadly. Great video. I'm a BIG FAN of Peak Designs too although after a strap failure (broke at the pivot point by the shoulder) I often use either my Pakt Backpack or my Minaal 3.0. Truth be told they're ALL awesome bags. The Peak Design Wash Pouch (small one actually) is my Go To as my "Dopp Kit". My suggestion would be to migrate away from the cotton t-shirts and go with Merino Wool products. They won't smell as much after multiple uses and maintain warming properties even if wet as opposed to cotton. I now only travel with merino wool t-shirts and socks if I can.

Great video, though you do carry a lot more than I did on my last long-term trip. I try to go with a 30l bag at the most as well as a small shoulder bag or something for easy access. Then again, I've not travelled for a year or more in a long time and I have a lot less tech I travel with. You guys are still far more minimalist than when I first started travelling. One does tend to size down over time once one recognises just how much unnecessary stuff you have taken a long. Happy travels!

Sizing down to 30l is a dream! Although all of our equipment is what will hold us back from sizing down too much. Staying in one climate will also help. @@SOSASATSUNRISEWow, that was a fast response time! I should also ask if you've had any issues with them on really hot pavements? This is something I hadn't considered up till recently when started seeing some comments about it. Yes I'm aware of the issues with adjusting to barefoot shoes, don't worry, I'd never just buy them right b4 a trip; I'm slowly working towards them - increasingly wider shoes with zero rise. Amber, are those the Z-trek zero shoes? Is it true they can be worn as water shoes? Have you tested this?

When we are editing and working we try to stay on top of things 😀. Neither of us have ever had issues with heat.or even cold feet in the winter. The Z-trek zero sandals can easily be worn in the water. Our feet do slide around quite easily when the sandals get wet but they dry quickly and you can always tighten them a bit. We’ve been travelling for 7 months of the last 13. We’ve found that more recently economy air travel flights are reducing the weight of your bags. We’ve had to pay for additional Kilograms for 1 checked bag on our last flight as we were restricted to 7k in our carryon. We got close with to just over 7k in our carryons. But that meant I couldn’t bring my camera or recording equipment. I’m hoping this is not a coming trend. They were also including the weight of your carryon and any personal bag in that amount. Just a way to grab more money.
@SOSASATSUNRISE Жыл бұрын
Sadly, there are always new rules to follow! Just some helpful tips. We always carry our big camera and tripod outside of our bags and have never been asked to weigh it. I would research the penalty for overweight carry on for whatever airlines you are flying. If the penalty is near the same amount as it is to pay for extra weight or a carry on, I would take the risk and see if they even check to see if your bag is over weight. Also, try not to even give them the opportunity to weigh your bag. Check in online or at a kiosk and avoid the counters at check in and boarding at all costs. We rarely have someone ask about the size of our bags. Hope this helps!

it will, the worse the airlines become with baggage the more people will travel like this and it will just continue to get worse. These bags are most definitely over weight and over the restricted size. Please don't travel like this, If your over the limit your taking space from someone else. If you need all this stuff to travel, check your bag or board last. They should just have dividers in the storage bin and that's all you get.

If your watch doesn't charge, try lightly scraping the charging ports with a pocket knife or some such. Once in a blue moon a light layer of patina may accrue on the copper, little enough that you can't see it with the naked eye, but enough for the connection not to work. I have resurrected many a watch like this. You don't need to scratch a whole lot, just a couple of scratches in the patina to let the power through is enough :)
@SOSASATSUNRISE Жыл бұрын
I was so excited to try this and hoped you were right. Sounds like a very plausible problem and solution. 90% of the time we walk onto the plane with no questions asked! If an extra bag is less than $10 when booking, we will happily pay to not have to worry later. Check in online and have you E-ticket on your phone to avoid the check in counter and try not to have two bags on when entering the plane. This also only applies to budget airlines. We have not had any problems carrying on our bags on any major airline.

Our best advice is to never give them the opportunity to see the size and especially the weight of your bag. Always check in ahead of time online and either download your boarding pass or print them from a kiosk. I think we have been "caught" twice while checking in and had to pay extra at the counter to check our bags. If the price to check your bag is astronomical, I would look at other airlines that may have a more expensive ticket but allow bigger carry ons or a free checked bag.

Thank you! We use two different tripods. One we ordered on Amazon and the other is from Sony. Our bigger tripod is mainly used for our Sony A6500 and the other was bought for our small Sony point and shoot. I would recommend the bigger one since it is more versatile. Both tripods and all our equipment is in our KIT. Link is in the description. 😀

Aren't these way above the weight limit for carry-on on moss airlines? How do you solve that?
@SOSASATSUNRISE Жыл бұрын
Depends on the airline. Although budget airlines typically have a weight limit of 7kg for carry on, we never go to the counter for check in and our bags have never been questioned while boarding. If the cost of a bigger carry on is cheap enough, we will pay the extra for peace of mind and still carry our bags onto the plane.

Did u mention airports? How can u be able to bring all the food?? I wouldn't really say u are minimalists bc some of the stuff u could leave at home. Make a capsule wardrobe- tops that matches with bottoms and vice versa. A tip is to watch pack hacker, i do...a lot.
@SOSASATSUNRISE Жыл бұрын
You can bring food on a plane. We didn't really go into much detail on our clothes but everything mixes and matches and can be worn together. We even wear eschothers clothes from time to time. We aren't perfect minimalists but for living out of the same bag for over a year, we do pretty good.

Does that grey bag actually fit in the overhead bins on an aircraft? Both bags don't look like they would fit.

Absolutely! Once or twice we had to use a little effort to push them in but they always fit.

We split up the camera gear. Nathan carries the go pros and smaller Sony camera and Amber has the big Sony camera on a strap that she carries. Our big camera never goes in a bag.

Not usually, no. My day pack was never questioned about for a personal item but my big bag was on a few flights.

first Congrats on your travels and videos. My question is this: how do you get past without having to weigh your bags? We have a weight restriction for 8 kg with our carry-on bags.
@SOSASATSUNRISE Жыл бұрын
Our biggest tip taking bags on without anyone noticing they are over the limit is to get a digital ticket. Never go to the counter if you can help it. I think roller suitcases taller hiking back packs are scrutinized more. Our back packs are seen as just a back pack. Ryanair has been VERY lenient for us. 😁

In our experience, you should be just fine on Turkish Airlines. Only budget airlines are sticklers for baggage allowances. Hope you have so much fun wherever you are traveling to!
@agelesswanderlust2289 Жыл бұрын
Our experience with this issue was in Australia flying with JetStar. We were under the impression they are very serious about weight. We had no choice about checking in- they insisted it be done in person. Then they were so short on staff to check people in they were over 3 hours late leaving. At one point there was only one person checking economy and 2 four the 8 people in business class. Because we had all carryon sized luggage they allowed us through without weighing us. However we had a couple of things in what was supposed to be a checked bag that we lost in security.

wait, ive traveled for 8 months in a carry on rolling case. my max weight was 7kg...how is this minimalist? lol most international airlines, esp budget will make them check those in.
@SOSASATSUNRISE Жыл бұрын
From our experience, roller suitcases seem to be scrutinized more. If it is not a tall hiking backpack, they often see our bags as just a backpack. We have checked our bags about 5 times over the past 16 months. Ryanair, Wizz, Airasia and Vietjet are the budget airlines we fly most and do not purchase extra luggage or check our bags. Often enough, especially in Europe, we download our boarding pass to our phone and scan the ticket ourselves to walk onto the plane with no questions asked.
