What WENT WRONG With Rocksteady?

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League finally launched worldwide last week, and to say the reception is mixed would be underselling it. Some love the combat, visuals and humor but acknowledge that the end-game, mission variety and overall story-telling leave them wanting.
This pattern isn't new with live service titles, but it especially pains fans of Rocksteady Studios. It's a developer that went from relative obscurity to near-legendary status with the Batman: Arkham series. From Batman: Arkham Asylum to the expansive Batman: Arkham City and gorgeous Batman: Arkham Knight, it's difficult to believe that the studio could fall this far.
Is it a case of the development team undergoing significant revamps, or was it simply ill-equipped to handle a genre outside its usual comfort zone? Join us as we ask what happened to Rocksteady.

It’s simple: Rocksteady lost all the lead devs who made the Batman games. It’s not the same Rocksteady anymore. Same with Infinity Ward, Bungie, Arkane, DICE, BioWare, etc. You have to keep an eye on personnel changes in these dev companies. Studio pedigree means nothing if the studio staff aren’t the same.

This is an actual problem. Studios can lose key players and still call themselves the same studio. It’s almost false advertising. I used to follow studios that were good and pre ordered their games, but that’s kinda pointless now. I won’t even preorder any games now. I have to wait and see if it’s actually good first.

They have a studio photo when they completed Arkham Knight and if you compare it to the current one…they are not even close to the same studio anymore.

Flash gets pissed on iirc, Batman is a loser and shows no ability to throw off or resist the mind control (despite mastering his mind in Arkham Knight) and Supes dies like a joke. Admittedly, even if the story was amazing it would still leave the looter-shooter and live service game model lol. So not everything, but a large part of things.

As someone that works in the games industry, it's actually quite baffling how many dev teams, ranging from small to a few hundred individuals, are held together by just a few key individuals, and were those individuals to leave, the company's games would drop significantly in quality.

SS: KTJL came into pre-production in early 2018. SBI did _NOT_ even exist before 2018. The game's script and plot were already done when they (SBI) were brought in for recommendations. SB did NOT work on the dialogue, only the characterization. The game was delayed in 2021 to 'soften' the Live service elements after the backslash from their first gameplay trailer. The things you didn't like from SS are 100% Rocksteady, not SBI. So, let's put on our big boy panties and stop spreading this false narrative. You're just embarrassing yourself.

Let’s be honest. The game was pretty much made at the time. They did help make this game. I don’t believe there was an overhaul of great magnitude between the release and the time they left the studio. They were just smart enough to ensure that their legacies wouldn’t be attached to this mess. The problem is much more fundamental than changes in dev team: the whole premise was bound to be a flop. It's as if Insomniac said: "nah, let's not do a Spiderman game featuring Peter Parker or Miles Morales. First mistake, to connect this game with the Arkham saga, why? There was no need, this could have been its own universe and they would have avoided a lot of hate then. Second, just a final scene, I don't know, where we saw the "real" heroes of the Justice League locked up, in suspended animation, what ever and that would make it clear that what we killed were clones, more problems avoided with the fandom. And therefore, it would even generate interest in the future to see the rescue of the heroes by the villains and believe me, even people would be more hooked. Top this off with a bland game, made purely for the sake of easy money and with the most repetitive, simplistic and boring gameplay, that at one point I said, I'd rather be playing "Palworld" than this. Add it all up, and you have the perfect storm for Rocksteady to shoot themselves in the foot. A shame, but there will always be the legacy of their original Arkham trilogy, this game honestly doesn't even count.

What likely happened was Rocksteady said what about we make a game like Arkham series except they fight the Justice League except once Warner Bros. got wind of this they said make it live service It would make sense since it was only recently we got Gotham Knights. Rocksteady hadn't a clue how to make a live service game. I'm not trying to defend Rocksteady to much as we still got the game we got and they may have highlighted it was a bad idea to Warner Bros. but at the end of the day they may have been strong armed into making it. I have to assume if it wasn't live service they may have made a better game and could have focused more on making each Suicide Squad member feel different. Would make sense why they had people leave the project to they had a great ideas but if they can just be strong armed into going against their vision they didn't want to work there anymore. But I do think we would have got bad boss fights still even if it wasn't live service as in Arkham Knight most of their boss fights was in the batmobile or just not great. Like who's idea was to have Slade fight Bruce in a tank as opposed to in combat like Origins.

I just got into Arkham knight and about to finish it. That and the Spiderman ps games are the best hero games I’ve played and AC is incredible. So disappointing to know the evolution of the style of the Batman games have completely flopped

This is what happens when you spend all your attention on live service, microtransactions, and seasons/battlepasses instead of story, gameplay and endgame. You end up with a half assed, half finished games. AAA games are now inferior to the indie games coming out nowadays. Once that indie gets bought up by big corporates , it's all over for them.

Someone somewhere must have made the decisions that led to what this game has become and I have a feeling WB had a hand in those decisions whether it's live service or making a Suicide Squad game. I heard something about Rocksteady wanting to try making a live service so it could be a combination of both. Either way the premise alone makes the game uneappealing in my opinion. Story wise I think it'd be more interesting if a Suicide Squad member went rogue after Arkham and took it upon themselves to save the city...or one Justice League member trying to save the rest. So many possibilities. Combine that with innovative gameplay in an atmospheric single player campaign...I think that'd be much more enjoyable.

I wanted to give it a chance despite all the negative comments on different platforms, especially on Steam and KZbin Comments on videos, so I bought the Digital Deluxe Edition to get "the full package", because I loved Arkham games (still playing them even today) and I knew Rocksteady made them Iconic Masterpieces.... So played like 1 hour and I was like "This shit is cringe, refund!" worst experience ever, I even enjoyed Gotham Knights much more, and finished the main story and some side stories of that, but this? Like wtf, Harley Quinn is like nothing compared to the Harley Quinn we knew from Arkham Games, this Harley Quinn is like if they ordered its personality from Temu, and put it into a body and clothes bought from Wish.... Not to mention what I have seen from gameplays, like wtf? They did bad with Flash, that was fucking disrespectful, they did bad with Batman too... and Harley grabbing Deadshot's *ss.... like what? Isn't that "sexual harassment" or it is only that if a male character does that to a female?

The post game content is Suicide Squad saves The Justice League there are datamined voice lines of The Flash asking why is he back and a voice telling the player he hasnt fully recovered from what brainaic did to him (which will probably be season 1) then there is a voice line of Lois Lane telling the people of metropolis that Green Lantern has also returned and is fighting with them again (which is probably season 2) there are also calendars in the game that give out a code saying "He will return" with the last calendar having the bat symbol

Replay Arkham Knight - even on PC, it's fine now. The Batmobile is not overused - the vast majority of the batmobile content is optional. Don't like it? Don't do it. It's crazy how a narrative forms about a game during release and then never changes.

World of Tanks: Arkham Edition has far too many unskippable tank missions. Ruined the game for me. If the tank was an optional problem solving tool I could use or not at my discretion, it wouldn't have. Knight is the prettiest game, but both in story and mechanics, it's the weakest of the three and a disappointment after City.

Sweet Baby Inc is what went wrong with Rocksteady. A plague in the videogame industry. Also, no one gives a crap about the Suicide Squad. When it comes to DC only Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman matter.

Plus any fan of the original trilogy never asked for this game, we just wanted another quality sequel as the Batman. What annoys me more is that they had years to do this as arkham knight came out in 2015.

Shit I loved Arkham knight from the jump but that’s cuz I didn’t need to deal with the PC port I had a ps4.. the tank parts never bother me the racing for riddler was the only thing I had issues with and the short DLC.. but everything else was dope I think I will replay it today

Right there with you. I actually loved the tank parts. The Batmobile was so much smoother to control as a tank than it was as a car. As for Riddler and the racetracks, a lot of his stuff felt wonky. I never bought him as the tech head. Between the time element and the involved construction, the racetracks felt like they should have been under the control of someone like Clock King. If they'd created a Clock King/Riddler alliance, that I would have believed more readily.

Maybe but i think this game did too much damage to fans, they would need to publicly cut Sweet Baby Inc out. They have sunk so many years and money into this and its gonna implode worse than Anthem and Marvel Avengers in a few months.

Fun gameplay, good story with great scenes and acting, cool city, tons of end game content, I'm absolutely loving it. The criticism is partly valid (repetitive missions, short story) but I feel like this game got stuck between Rocksteady's legacy and games as a live service hatred. Suicide Squad is it's own thing and it deserved a warmer reception.

Well after Rocksteady killed Arkham Batman and the Justice League before we got to see them I don't think that they'll be able to recover from this even if the bring a Justice League from another universe because its not gonna feel the same, especially with the Batman.
