What went wrong with the scorpion crawler? In this video I'd like to discuss the changes and modifications I've had to make since the initial build.
Starting out as a 1998 Jeep cherokee this thing has been under the knife quite a bit, check out the entire build at this playlist: bit.ly/2rXnlc4

As someone who builds exhaust systems. I would try to stay away from wrapping it. 1) XJ's leak oil and it is oil on exhaust wrapping that can cause a fire. 2) if you are not using stainless steel the exhaust wrap on a offroad rig can become saturated with mud and water. The water will rust out your exhaust. 3) Though pricey, I would have a nice 16 gauge T304 stainless exhaust built by a fab shop and have the system TIG welded. Stainless steel is a poor conductor of heat so it spills much less heat out than other options. Do it right once and you'll never have to do it again :)

@ 14:30 The current link bars are steel 2.00 x 0.25 (assuming) x 24. With an applied force of 2000 lbs they have a deflection of 0.572. By plus sizing to steel 2.50 x 0.3125 the deflection drops to 0.234. Aluminum solid rod of 2.5 x 24 has a deflection of 0.457. Even if the deflection was the same for aluminum the bending stress yield is a problem. There is a reason they don’t make springs out of aluminum.

7075 has a way higher yield point that steel. and they don't make springs out of 1/4 inch dom tubing either

Dirt track racers use simple foam plugs/pucks to keep the hub centers clear/free from mud. You can try different densities of foam to see what stays in there. And maybe soak/spray a little WD-40 on them to resist some muddy water too.

You could use a rubber gasket around the lip of the box that houses the subwoofer to help seal it from water and use a simple latch like a cigar box latch or a post lock to keep it shut and sealed from water.

I just use army surplus ammo cans for storage. You can mount them with bungees, rivets, or bolts. The latter of which, put a gob of rtv around the hole then tighten in the bolt or rivet for a good seal. The cans are tough and waterproof

As per the wheels, or lug nuts.... I highly recommend that you either buy, or machine some centric-rings, to center the rim on the axle... I realize those aid in drive ability for street cars and aftermarket wheels and tires... but, your lug nuts are designed to merely hold the wheel to the assembly, and although, they can take quite a bit of rotational torque, , hitting a bump, that would force the wheel to slide in one direction on the mating surface, can lead to breaking the studs. rotational loads happen to the lug nuts evenly, and will still "somewhat" keep the wheel centered, now, they are under further holding load, now, throw in hitting a bump hard, or landing hard, and the wheel wants to slide on the mating surface/rotor hat. some of the lug nuts will get tighter in the tension, as others will be allowed to fall back in the torque spec range or less then what you originally tightened they too... Typically, the centric rings, have a small lip, that prevents them from falling off, through the center of the wheel outwards, (.010" to .050" flange/lip). Also, they should be a snug fit, and needs to be calculated for if you intend to run center caps, then, the rings will need to be machined for that... they will also help with the packing of mud, as they fill the void area there.. so bonus... You can machine them out of aluminum, but they do not last very long, due from corrosion effects of the dissimiliar alloy to metals contact, steel, the same thing, just rusts, unless you goop the living daylights out of them with antisieze, other wise, do your self a favor, and simple spend the money on a chunk of stainless steel. The center of the wheel and tire to the axle shafts, will assist in proper tire wear, as well, even for the short runs on road, at least when starting out on new tires, yours, that you are currently running, those are already worn to the attitude they will finish their lives with.. safety first brother... good job on the video, again, keep up the great work, Drew

Hey Matt, If you havent put the exhaust back in, I would look into getting it ceramic coated before wrapping it. It should help keep more heat from escaping than just the wrap, and it will help protect the exhaust from rusting when the wrap gets whet from off road driving and holds the moisture against it. Just a thought edit: I wrote this before I got all the way through the video. Maybe next time its off, haha

about the seat this is WAY of topic of wheeling but it may help I have a bunch of drift happy friends and one of them when he gos to the track he pulls his seats out to drop some weight. his seats are all quick release. on the hinge that tilts it forward he cut the pin out and just has a cotter pin thro it. with the pin it the seat still tilts back and forth for putting tires and what not in the back of his car to get to the track but onces there it takes 20 seconds and his back seat is out. you could do the same to your rig that way when u want the seat ,put in the pin and it is usable and you wouldn't even notic a differents , when u only ride with yourself , pull the pins and leave the back seat at home. I hope this helps. as I say in all your videos I hope this helps and I'm happy to help anytime I can. seea on the trail !

the rock busted knuckle guy had to go to thicker walled steel tubing & then bc moon buggy crazy added aluminum inside the steel case arm. U can cut the steel extra thick arms to size then the threading & hemi joints all in the aluminum inside the steel. That way steel protects arms & get best of both.

DON'T use RTV to seal your tires. It will NOT stick. Use automotive URETHANE and PINCHWELD primer on the rim and tire bead. This WILL NOW STICK just like your winshield does. Be sure this is what you want, it will be Very hard to remove when changing tires. I HAVE DONE THIS with non bead lock rims and run consistant 4 psi off road and not lost a bead in 4 years.
