The first Terminator is the best. It creates such a unique atmosphere, and the terminator is very terrifying. An unstoppable killer, with no sense of humor, and the highest kill count. Even in the second terminator this breaks apart, who let's him smile or say funny things. It's not that bad in the second one, and also the second terminator is a very good action movie. But the first one is just different. And it started the way to make the terminator less terrifying and more laughable. Oh, and in my world the 6th part just doesn't exist, it's just THAT bad.

@@DCMedien There was an entire exterminator of terminators from the future as a bodyguard next to the heroine in the first one. In the second, we have a terrifying liquid shape-shifter who's times more advanced than his slow primitive predecessor or current counterpart. The plots, thus, are nearly identical here and level out. You trying to dismiss the scariest fastest shape-shifter as a non-existent or "laughable" threat is more than odd here. You just seem to be entirely forgetting the actual movie and all its terrifying chases that kept you thrilled from the start to the end.

I think the single biggest problem they've had since T1 (not T2) Age rating. T1 18 T2 15 T3 12a T4 12a T5 12a T5 15 The first movie was for adults. It wasn't for as many people as possible. As a result we got a horrifying movie. T2 started the trend of appealing to a wider audience by dropping the rating, graphic content and language. By the time Salvation came about it was a bit pathetic
@JammyGuns
@JammyGuns Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I agree with that, though I do think what you're saying applies to the Indiana Jones franchise with Crystal Skull completely lacking all bite and violence. But otherwise there's plenty of violence in T2 on par with T1, and even in the more anemic T3 a cop still gets punched clean through by the TX... It may be an issue perhaps but I don't think it's anywhere near the biggest. Really for me the Terminator movies have just fallen victim to the same problems as so many other franchises being produced in this age, chiefly prioritising style over substance - not just in terms of special effects but also dialog, characters, writing etc. Look what's happened to Star Wars and so many others. The big criticism 10 yrs ago was the abuse of CGI but it isn't even so much of a CGI problem anymore; they just flat out can't write characters or interesting stories now...

@jammyguns8015 with each movie there's less visual blood/gore and less bad language. In T1, when Arnie starts shedding skin, there's blood all the time. By the time you get to Salvation there is nothing, nowhere. Each one is a little bit less "realistic" than the last. When people are murdered there's a lot of blood. When people are scared or angry, they swear. First one kicks off with "f**k you asshole" The worst in T2 from memory is "dickwad"

I grew up in the 90s so I saw T2 Judgment Day first on VHS. I didn't see the first one until I was in my early 20s on DVD at my friend's house and I realized I liked it better. The gritty fast paced plotline and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the bad guy was super cool. Also I liked Michael Biehn and wish he was in more movies. He's a great actor and played the part of Kyle Reese perfectly. You truly believe his character has seen some terrible things in his life and he did a great job telling us the audience what's going on. Unlike the action packed sequels the original Terminator has a dark horror movie feeling to it. I suggest not watching the other films they're shitty. Terminator and T2 are the only ones I really enjoyed.

Terminator 3 isn't as bad as I initially thought.. It just has too many silly parts which breaks the story. My favourite is The Terminator... In my opinion Terminator 2, is a little overrated. It doesn't have any of the stuff from the original that made it good.. Having a Terminator who can kill people with ease, coming up against another Terminator.. I didn't feel any stakes. And it's no longer a slasher horror like the first one.
@judsongaiden9878

9:25 Michael Biehn also struggled with that. If they'd ever gone to AA meetings together, would it have been ironic or unironic? 13:45 What it got right was taking place during the "future" war and not involving time travel. 14:40 That partially explains why they keep rehashing the same tropes over and over and over again instead of treading new ground.

For me, the first 2 Terminator is one Story and they end perfect with the alternativ ending in T2. And i also like Terminator Salvation as a Ad On because T1 and T2 tell us the Story of the changed Timeline, T Salvation on the other Hand show us the Future from where the Terminators and Kyle Reese came. Its a a Prequel (because Kyle Reese) in the other Timeline. They have found a perfect actor for a young Kyle and Cristian Bale is great as John Conner. At the beginning of T2 we can see John Conner as an adult, and Bale fits in really well with that Actor. The Bale Conner could become this future Conner from Part 2. And indeed, J.Conner in T2 also has these scars on his face, which Conner also gets at the end of Salvation. It goes really well with T1 and T2. Hence, for me, T1, T2 and Salvation. You can forget all the others.

The Terminator was the best because it was an original horror scifi movie that caught moviegoers by surprise. I rewatch it more than T2. T2 was great because it built off the first movie. But it changed the ending from that of a dark future to a bright one. That was a great ending to the storyline but not a good direction for anymore sequels. Rise Of The Machines was decent but it didn't need to be made and it didn't fit neatly with the first two movies. Trilogy was unnecessary because it undermined and diminished the impact of The Terminator and Judgment Day. The main character went from being a terrifying killing machine to being an action hero then becoming a little less serious and a little too humorous. A prequel was a great idea but failed with Salvation. Bad story, bad casting, and bad directing. It should've had the same dark, horrifying tone as the original movie. Genesis and Dark Fate? 👎🏾👎🏾 the end.

I do feel T1 is the best there just a sense of threat and a a vibe that has never been matched imo......I think as arnold became more popular him being a villian was probably off putting for some......in a way being kind of an indie thing with an unkown actor at the time benefited T1 in a way....they ratched up the humor for the sequels....wheras in T1 the little bit of humor was more matter of fact then aiming for that funny moment or repeating tropes to the point of parody.

Here's an idea, how about a Terminator movie from the point of view of a regular family. Like how walking dead and things like that show the zombie apocalypse from the perspective of regular people, and how they cope with the tragedy. A Terminator movie that shows the aftermath of Judgement Day, and how a regular family deal with that might be interesting. No John Connor, no chosen one, No Arnie. There's over 8 billion people in the World. The Connor's weren't the only family effected. They could even do a time jump, and show the prototype t800's. ones that predate the Arnie ones. This is just one idea.

Imagine being so successful, that still making almost twice what you invested is considered failure. That makes filmmakers try too hard to do the wrong thing it appears. Continuing enriching work is adding something valuable to the epic. Capitalism entering the creative process is compromising to the craft. That's where parody develops. Parody had it's place but not to inspire.

What went wrong? T2 happened. And it was turned into a template to follow. As fun of a Hollywood summer blockbuster that still is, T2 introduced: - What you watched prior didn't matter. It is firmly established in the original movie that there is and can only be the two of them: Kyle and the T-800. Terminator tells the story of humanity's last battle against the machines. That's the entire premise. But you know... Hollywood sequel magic. And Cameron being approached by Carolco money men if he wouldn't be interested in a sequel. A sequel to his first hit, after his last movie (The Abyss) had rather flopped. Oh, so Judgement Day IS inevitable? And Skynet now is replaced by Legion? WHO GIVES A SHIT ANYMORE. - An almost 1:1 retelling of the previous film (just with more subplot fat and exposition slowing it down, lessening the impact). In an attempt to top what's come before, by introducing an advanced Terminator with a new set of special effects and gadgets. Whilst this almost worked here due to Robert Patrick's performance and Cameron's restraint to still make encounters up-close and personal rather than giving Patrick rocket launchers and whatever: Every sequel followed down that route. With the consequence that you cannot tell your basic Terminator action from just about every Marvel super hero action anymore: Special dudes using special abilities and triggering flashy spectacle effects everywhere. No matter how hard you try: If you keep on telling that story of a killer robot out to get ya, you're not going to beat the original movie that way. As no image and gadgettery ever is gonna beat the image the original movie transported as a symbol of its story: That of a machine not even letting go off its deadly routines when its barely functional anymore by the end of it: Skin hanging and rotten, eye gauged out, leg limping. And a frail and visibly mortal human being desperately unmatched -- and still trying to put up that fight for all of humanity and stop that machine. - Add to this that the Terminator had long since been made the source of popculture jokes, high-fives and family-friendly plotlines of "making him more human" since forever, and you lose all major impact your titular creature may have ever had. Good luck trying though. What's the next Terminator gadget gonna be, Hollywood?

Now here's my but and that is the sad truth is this is a lack of effort more than it is anything else. It shouldn't have to be this way. This is a lack of effort, nothing more. It's absolutely pathetic. The terminator sequels would be so much better with a competent team and director behind it! Normally, Hollywood does make too many movies, and that's what ruins the movies, but this is not the case with the Terminator. It's just that the director behind the sequels after 3 is an absolute disgrace!

Both Arnold and Jim are to blame. Arnold, because he allowed those directors to turn his character into a comedy joke, starting at terminator three, where Arnold was such a big star that he could have said hell no don’t put these jokes in and don’t make my character talk the scientific babble, but then Jim is just to blame because by constantly endorsing terminator movies just to be good for his Besty, he literally took our trust in him away because now we don’t trust what he says. I don’t trust either Arnold or Jim anymore at all. Both of them have shown that they don’t Understand the very things they were part of. Jim doesn’t care about his creations now because he is in the oceans with avatar and Arnold doesn’t care because he wants to be seen as Mr. funny guy. The 1 and the 2 are the best and the 4 is not bad too but already with the 2 Cameron started to do anything with the excess of jokes, certainly it was funny but it considerably reduced the tension and the horror that the first film had installed and that's where the 4 did a little well, fewer jokes and more serious like in the first (it just lacks a little horror). I wish there was a trilogy that chronicled the most important events of the futur war but that's not the case, at least we have the video game "Terminator Resistance" which did.

I see and understand your point, the first is the best and it stands on its own, but judgment day is the greatest sequel ever made, and is a masterpiece and the perfect follow up to the original masterpiece

T1 and T2 were the only unambiguously good ones because they were the only ones that really had anything behind them. T1 was a basic slasher horror film with an interesting premise, slasher films being a dime a dozen in the early 80s. T2 retroactively pulled T1 up as well thanks to its story, action, and effects (all of which still hold up incredibly well today). My thinking is that the key was its take on fate. T1 laid out in no uncertain terms that the war is coming and that nothing can stop it, while T2 not only upped the ante but directly challenged that hypothesis as well. Everything since then was simply a popcorn action flick at best, directly mimicking T2 with various gimmicks (Arnold being old, John Connor being the bad guy, etc.). Honorable mention to Salvation, though. Props for at least trying to do something different.

That it sed stop making sequel's why not just give us 1 movie that's a prequel & a sequel @ the same time based 11 years after salvation but still the prequal of the terminator & terminator 2 time travel flaw. Call jenisis & dark fate a multiverse problem.

All hardcore Terminator fans know that the accepted lore is The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Terminator: Resistance (the fairly recent and killer video game), while also acknowledging that Terminator Salvation wasn't awful. lol Any entry that follows and respects the history and tone of Cameron's first 2 films, while ignoring the 3 hideous entries that need not be spoken of.. lol

The original should have been the only film. T2 story is mess it completely contradicts and convoluted the story that was set in the first film. In so many ways T3 is easily the best sequel because its much more in line with the original in its ideas and message. It was also needed to correct the massive plot holes T2 made. Salvation was not needed but at least its coherent in its story. 5 and 6 are just garbage

The problem with film franchises like Terminator and Alien is they're so good. Yet repetition is lazy and on the whole just does not work. The reason why these films were so good is they were original. The rise of the great TV series was a direct consequence of the failure of reboots to deliver. And this goes for T2 and Aliens especially. They're great films. And a lot of people love them. But the originals far surpass them. The trouble with these two films predominantly lay in the fact that sci fi horror and children just do not mix. That said. They're also just not very good films. Cameron for me is just another average director. But he somehow struck gold with Terminator. Arnie was nothing before T1. Conan is childish pap like the 70s Spiderman films. Pure rubbish. But T1 propelled him to the career we all love. Predator. Total Recall. Red Heat. Etc. The main problem with these films is not even the director. It's re-hashing a great story and expecting the audience to enjoy it as much as the original. The art of film is dying because original work loses out to established repetition. Asia arose because Hollywood just ran out of steam. Now it's all generic stories and rubbish characters repeating nonsense ad infinitum. So much is spent no one wants to risk a wet blanket. T3 is obviously far worse than T2. Particularly because by 2003 all these films suffered from a decent start but rubbish ending arc. Die Hard is a classic example. Great original. Pretty useless sequel. And part three starting good but going downhill thereafter. I think the creativity exists. But it's always the tame writers that get the job. And on top of that - T1 marked the near end of a golden age. By the late 80s films were just getting rubbish with a few jewels hidden in the dog doo. I know a lot of people will disagree with me. But the proof is in the pudding. No film is perfect. I'm sure plot holes exist in T1. Why didn't the machines just kill Sarah Connor as a baby for example. But T2. Jeeez. Remember that bit when thirteen year old John can break into top secret labs with his gizmo. How ridiculous. It's an extended scene that includes Arnie shooting up-the cops but not killing them - BORING - with his helicopter gun. They break in, have an extensive shoot out with the cops, where Dyson dies, and they escape. The cops arrive because, you know, radio calls them in. And the bad terminator gets the message. This is the most incompetent terminator in history. Where the hell was he when he got the message? Alaska? Did he get lost en route? And why did Dyson switch sides? So what if he sees the arm on Arnie. He was working on the damn arm from the original in a top secret lab. Suddenly he's on the good guy team. Talk about a weak storyline. You've got a kid who tells his protector don't kill anyone. And he survives. This is a kid. A bit of shrapnel could kill him and he doesn't even get a scratch. Same with Newt. Really boring storyline. I won't digress but Aliens is so full of holes you could fly the Nostromo through them all. Let's not forget an alien that can kill with its blood decides to get inside a cage IE a lift / elevator instead of just climbing up the exterior in seconds. And we know the planet is about to explode. But Ripley decided to shoot up the queen - because she sees an egg. Ridiculous. A good shoot em up scene. But childish story telling in the extreme. A lot of people say T2 and Aliens surpass the original films. But unfortunately those people are frankly just idiots. Remember when Sarah could not bring herself to shoot Dyson. She missed him with a thousand bullets whilst outside. Oh a toy hit his foot. That was lucky. His kid saves his life. Twice. Because Sarah can't shoot him. Not even to save her own son ... And humanity. So instead they decide to rob and easy to break into too secret facility and blow it up with a bunch of stuff that just happens to be laying around. Jeeez. This is really bad story telling. Sorry but it just is. Mad Max is the only sequel I can think of that comes close to the original. But even that does not surpass its prior masterpiece. One edit though. The only Terminator re-boot that needs to be made is a 100% set in the future war between Connor and Rees etc al and the machines. Now that would hopefully be a decent film. Maybe.
