I was most surprised when I learned Anakin says "Padme help me!" right before the mask comes down. If you rewatch that scene with the audio way up you can hear it.

It is not mentioned in the book at all, I would assume not given the damage and how he had to drag himself uphill after being burned. The heated black rocks would have continued burning and scraping him as he pulled himself away from the lava.
