I remember eagerly awaiting every Friday update and trying to figure out what notch added before everyone else… we even used to datamine the jar to find newly added textures as hints. Before Redstone had a name a lot of us used to call it copper since it was “conductive.” Sometimes you’d hear what was added but not how to craft it and you’d have to guess patterns until you figured it out. These were the days, easily among my favorite memories of early Minecraft. Thanks for the nostalgia!

One way they could bring secret updates back would be to release them as part of a bigger update. A close example to this would be the addition of Netherite in 1.16, but imagine if it was never announced not only in the initial trailers, but not even in the changelogs as well. Picture this: You decide to go Nether mining because you need quartz (or you heard they added gold ore to the Nether that you need for bartering). You descend into the depths, breaking through Netherrack, and you encounter a strange brown block. Upon collecting it, you receive a new furnace recipe for a “netherite scrap”, and decide to investigate. You smelt the ancient debris to create a scrap and you get the recipe for a netherite ingot. Upon gathering enough netherite and gold to craft an ingot, you receive new recipes for the supposedly-useless smithing table of all things (or the crafting table in an earlier snapshot), and realize you can upgrade your diamond gear to be stronger than before. How cool (if a little convoluted) would that be if they let us discover these things organically?
@grandmasteryoda67172 жыл бұрын
that would be so damn cool
@destructivforce28942 жыл бұрын
While cool, there was a small amount of backlash to netherite, which while it died down quick with the update, might not have died down as quick if people just happened to stumble into armor better than diamond.

That first year up to the Halloween update was a wild time. Notch was really involved in the community, and he had a photo of the view from his office; if you could figure out where he was he'd take you out to lunch. I don't think anyone ever managed though. I don't think a game will recapture that zeitgeist ever again. Also my friend had the opportunity to be Employee #2 at Mojang but the email sat in his junk folder for about 4 years

I started during beta 1.7.3, pretty much everything up to release 1.8 was a secret update. I quite literally managed to ignore the changelogs all the way from 2011-2013, but I will say, it was very fun. I remember the day when beds stopped spawning monsters half the time I slept, and I was extremely happy when I realized it was gone. I also remember when they added a ton of new Redstone components, I was shocked when I saw this strange thing called a “Hopper.” Sadly I didn’t figure out how it worked until a year later. It may be worth noting I barely used the internet at the time, so I didn’t really have anyone telling me about updates and new features all the time. The experience overall was quite fun, but I have to admit that since I’ve been reading changelogs, I’ve finally been able to actually have fun with features that were added past 1.3.

Snow was by far the best thing. I am pretty sure I started January 2011 and I mined through a mountain in a spiral staircase (after running away from a zombie as he hurt me when I tried to touch him, hey I didn't know anything). When I saw it snowed (there was obviously no snow on the ground) I made a hole in the top of my base and put some glass in (man, I just remembered how proud I was to figure out how to make glass, just dumping everything into the furnace). And like 1 or 2 patches later I think the snow just disappeared. One of my saddest memories in regards to Minecraft
@314rft2 жыл бұрын
About Seecret Friday 2, you missed 1 minor but VERY important detail: Signs would crash your game due to Notch accidentally giving mob spawners the same tile entity id as signs. This meant that loading any world with signs in it in this version would crash and possibly corrupt your world, and loading a world created in this version in later versions would cause any existing mob spawners to both be defective and have ghost signs inside of them. So for anyone looking to play a version with mineable spawners, do NOT play inf-20100625-2. Just play inf-20100627, where that bug was fixed, instead.

While I don't think they should go back to secret updates... It would be nice if they had secret features that they didn't announce beforehand. If they kept them out of the public snapshots, that would be even better... Give the game a little bit more of that classic mystery element. :) People would still spoil the surprise online, of course, but its the thought that counts...

Brings me joy to see X is still synonymous with early alpha Minecraft. Sure, you can dismiss him as just one in a long line of Minecraft KZbinrs that fizzled out over the years, but I prefer to think of him as the unassuming pillar that the entire scene was built upon. Minecraft KZbin is it's own industry now, and X, in my eyes, will always be that quaint guy who stumbled into starting it. Glad you included the X-system and his world file in the video. It was a great choice.
