What were the Dwarves doing during the Lord of the Rings?

It's a bit frustrating that the trilogy LOTR contains only 2 or 3 dwarf. I understand it would take very long to add "meanwhile, sauron are killing darwes too" because you can show that for just 5 seconds, you need to develop a background to make that then it's a huge deal/loss. But while Moria was empty, it looked like Gimli was the last dwarf standing on middle earth

Only thing I noticed was Oin did make it inside, and so did the others, they lived in Moria for 5 years and then they got attacked by an army coming up the mountain. Oin with a small band tried to escape via the Western gate when the Watcher got them. And the rest retreated to the final layer (the top, seventh layer) and died around the tomb days after Balin died.

This is the answer that i needed thanks 👌 The Dwarves do fight against Sauron but not seen or included in the movies.

i would agree with this, but with the current climate of how terrible television is, and how awful rings of power was, i don't want one.

I still do wish, however, that the external battles weren't "off-screen". The battles between Sauron and the North almost felt tacked on, in some appendices, because Tolkien knew people would ask "well what about?", though they weren't in tbe main story. I get that not every grain of sand in the desert, or blade of grass on the plains, could be detailed, and fleshed out, by Tolkien; even the great dweller on details had to draw a line some places, or his three-part work would've been seven, but some of the things he chose to keep vague, or obscure, just irritated me, as someone who likes to find out all the extra aide stuff. I like to think that one additional motivation of Gandalf, in getting the Dwarves to destroy Smaug, and retake Erebor, was to give them such a defensible focal point, for the battles against Mordor he knew were coming. Smaug was maybe just the worst case, and while Sauron might've been able to loose some true hell with his aid, or depend on it, even if Smaug remained a wild card, he certainly didn't depend on Smaug as integral to his strategies. I don't know what the Dwarven settlements are like in the Blue Mountains, or the Iron Hills, but regular Orcs seemed capable of ousting Dwarves from rheir lairs, as it was, so maybe Gandalf wanted Erebor to be a place the Dwarves could shut themselves within, and ride out the storm, slowing Mordor's advance through the north. This might already be videos, but how did Gandalf REALLY plan for Smaug to be destroyed? He left them to their own devices, when bigger fish needed frying, so he certainly didn't plan to go wizard on the dragon, and kill it himself. He said no heroes were available, implying none of the Dwarves present qualified, and to be fair, even all the Dwarves at Erebor couldn't fight, and kill, Smaug. Once he was in, none of them seemed to shore up, and make assault plans to best him; they knew they couldn't do it. Smaug DID have a weak spot, but no one had a reason to expect one of his scales had slipped, and if Gandalf had thought the quest was important; to get Smaug off the chess board, and give the Dwarves, and the North, a stronghold against evil, I wonder what his plan was, apart from "we're just, and good prevails. Providence will provide for us."? He didn't seem to plan for other Dwarves to aid them, or for the Mirkwood Elves to assist, so what did he THINK would happen, apart from just hoping blindly that something would? He was well aware that evil was, at times, permitted to prevail, or at least persist, so I wonder how he thought they'd win? Most such monsters also seem to demand that he who bests them also die for the privilege, so I wonder what type of mortality rate Gandalf expected?

When there was a request for military aid the Dwarves sent 1 dwarf imitating the Spartans when they were asked for military aid.

Oin lead a party of dwarves trying to escape from Moria through the Doors of Durin. But the other dwarves fled back inside while Oin was grabbed by the Watcher in Water, and dragged below the surface where he was devoured I believe. It was never clew if he was eaten or not.
