I always thought of them as assistants to the Valar or were another form of Maiar that helped to shape Arda during its creation and were in charge of its upkeep. Kind of like groundskeepers. Constantly keeping the mountains built up (or tearing a few down), redirecting rivers (or creating new ones), or moving till of dirt and land to other places or valleys.
@fensoup7161 Жыл бұрын
wait thats actually a very good theory, that would make them kind of like non evil balrogs edit: That could also explain why there stories about them even though we rarely see them, maybe they used to be way more numerous but as Arda was completed they all started changing their physical forms to go to valinor.

The Hobbit was also written first and Tolkien was refining the world of Middle Earth as he went along. I think if he had written The Hobbit later on, the Stone Giants would not have been in the Hobbit at all. Not to say that Stone Giants wouldn't have existed in Middle-Earth lore, just not well into the Third Age in Middle-Earth. Maybe the party would come across ancient ruins that they discover was once a Stone Giant.
@jacobwilliams65454 жыл бұрын
Paulafan5 first in what sense. He wrote much of the lore decades before hobbit
@joshuah.44964 жыл бұрын
The only problem with this is that he decided to keep them in the lore after the lore had already been fully established. The version of The Hobbit we read today is not the original version. After figuring out all the lore while writing LOTR Tolkien found certain things in The Hobbit that he needed or wanted to be changed in order to fit it all within the same universe. So well after The Hobbit was originally published Tolkien wrote a revised edition which changed certain things about the creatures, lore/history, and relevant plot points. For example, in the original version of The Hobbit Golem actually willingly agrees to give Bilbo the ring if he won the riddle game, as the ring was a birthday present of his from a time when magic rings were much more common. Golem even willingly lead Bilbo out of the caves as a replacement gift when he found he had lost the ring

Stone giants might be a leftover from the earlier creation stages of Arda, that they were created as helpers by the Ainur to help shape the world, and that some kind of stone giant (a child?) was taken and corrupted into the trolls by Morgoth, since their flesh is alike to stone and they return to their natural stone forms when exposed to sunlight.

Yeah i read the books first but I too thought it was possibly it was an explanation for the sounds of thunder they were hearing. The way the people of old used to explain it by saying Thor was angry people seek explanations for the natural phenomena that scare them. But I don't mind the movie's depiction at all, it just makes the whole thing scarier because these things are so strong and make the company seem even more helpless against their fate. I think the writers thought long about everything they put in the story and why so it will have had a purpose. In books you can talk about their thoughts, in a movie you have to show it, it would be a depiction of their minds.

It's hard to imagine any off-shoot of Men becoming as gigantic as the Stone Giants. It seems more likely to me that their origins lie in the Ainur or some form of spirit incarnate. Bilbo also remembers stories about ogres, which might be related to the giants, trolls or Orcs or might be other creatures altogether--maybe connected to the eastern legends of the oni.

When I read the Hobbit I viewed them as a figment of Bilbo's imagination. BUT, as I read more, I view them as a version of a lesser Maiar (Caradhras, was view as "an angry mountain"). So Tolkien had nature spirits (i.e. Goldberry, Melian) that took humanoid form. So why not? It fits in with the Celtic setting he was echoing of 'spirits of place'. So why not? The storm wakes them, and then they "fall asleep"/merge back into the rock when done. Semi-sentient spirits of place. And obviously there were influenced by Guillermo Del Toro's stone giant from Hellboy II, and carried over from when he left the Hobbit.

The stone giants could be morgoth first attempt at making trolls as they were made from the mountains and trolls are rather large but morgoth likely wanted bigger but he kept failing to corrupt something that large (may sound strange but morgoth probably isn't as big as we tend to think (we know this because he wore the 3 silmarils on his crown and they were made by a elf so they were designed for someone around 2 metres tall to hold now melkor wears these on his crown so he's likely only around 5 metres tall))

I always thought of them as beings made out of stone such as golems from WoW or Castle in the Sky. Interesting interpretation that they originated from humans, but my problem with this interpretation is the scale of the giants compared to the humans, as beornings and hobbits are much more human in scale and and size. The idea that they originated from humans is also in conflict with the fact that they're called stone giants and not just giants, because I think this is an important detail which indicates that they're probably more likely spirits of nature.
@elric74154 жыл бұрын
I think that they could have been a creation of Aüle the smith-god of the valar; It is said that Aüle created the dwarves out of clay cause he wanted a creation of his own. So what if aüle wanted to create stone giants as helpers to the dwarves, so they two races can fashion great works. I also believe that stone giants are going to play a part in rebuilding Arda with the dwarves after the final battle with Morgoth.

I had a thought that perhaps the giants the dwarves and Bilbo saw were just their interpretation of of chaotic nature. That maybe there were no giants present at all but rather their smaller stature amongst such chaotic and fierce weather gave the impression of giants playing among the storm. Or maybe it’s just Bilbo being dramatic in his telling over the story of his adventure and he’s being metaphorical in his storytelling for a chaotic storm. A last thought I had that they were perhaps some Maiar that took residence in Middle Earth. That they took the forms of these Mountain Giants and were merely acting as spirits of nature, neutral in terms of loyalty to Melkor or the Valar.

Remember that originally 'The Hobbit' was just a tale for his kids and while it took place in Middle Earth, it was not intended to be part of the history of Middle Earth as written in 'The Silmarillion' which predates 'The Hobbit.' That came later after Tolkien's publishers wanted a follow-up to TH asap. TLOTR was that. 'The Hobbit' was actually changed in 1953 or so to more closely align with lore from 'The Silmarillion' so that TLOTR made more sense when he finally finished 'The Silmarillion.' He never finished it. He was revising it until he died.

i LOVE them being made of stone! and what u said in the end of the video-i think they’re SUPPOSED to be creatures of base instincts, rather than fully sentient with complex intelligence and emotions, like laughter. very akin to the cave troll in LOTR. not only do i think that’s just plain all-around cooler and better, but i believe it fits everything better. they’re almost definitely not supposed to have the spirit of the secret fire, otherwise we would have heard something about them in the creation of arda, as we do with everything else, so that could easily lead to existing as an less complex being without a “soul”. the only other explanation i see is for them to be just some other undescribed entity, like the nameless things, but that just doesn’t fit well in my opinion, at all. it fits for them to be aule’s creation to pair with yavannas ents(which together r the “tree giants and stone giants”). well, whatever u personally subscribe to, i think them being truly humanoid, is unbelievably lazy and stupid, and being “stone giants”, them being made of stone is the perfect direction that i believe Tolkien probably intended(unless anywhere contradicts that). they’re totally unique and interesting beings of arda, as the huge creatures made of stone/made from the mountain. them being just large humans would be just as bad as ents being just large humans with leaves for hair, or just with clothes made from branches and leaves....how horrible and disappointing would THAT be?!? lol

This is really inspired from myths and legends explaining the sound of storms with giants playing drums or else. It looks like he wanted to use them in the story, as the Hobbit is a fable. Doesn't need to be realistic or explainable in the lore

I like the idea that they were pure spirits, fea, that could inhabit stone and make it come alive.

The Stone Giants are so violent in the Thunderstorm, they kill each other by throwing boulders on their heads.

I love the idea of the ecistence of things in Arda that do not answer to the fight between good and evil, they are simply entities pf the world, which amplify the sense of magnitude of this world, in which not everything is known, and not everything can be put into a bestiary, as a cintific work, full of races, with its own biology. This adds to the sense that not everything in Arda is to be understood, explained and put inside this world as lego pieces, some things cannot be differentiated, and scape the realm of knowledge, and is part of the unknown.

When the characters call something a giant, it doesn't necessarily mean its an actual giant. Its just something thats larger than anything they've seen and dont know how to describe it. The stone giants seen in the hobbit move could've been accidentally created when morgoth was raising the mountains. They'd be naturally in nature because he didn't pour evil into moving mountains, and when manipulated the landscape, accidentally manipulated life into stone. Not necessarily creating anything, seeing how evil cant create, just manipulate and corrupt.

If Yavanna was allowed to make Ents to be the protectors of the forests, why not Stone Giants the protectors of caves and mountains? Or maybe the were they early creations of Aulë since he made dwarves out of stone, but Stone Giants could have been a early/unifinished version of a dwarf? Dwarves believe they will turn back into the mountains they came from (one of the their beliefs) so why it's impossible to assume when Eru gave life to Aulë's dwarves, Stone Giants being maybe precursors of dwarves were equally given life at the same time? But being passive, looking like literal stones, nobody could really know where or when they were active. Maybe they were only active so rarely (what would a literal walking stone need to do anyway apart from maybe relocating once every several ages due to landscape changes or erosion) that they were only seen once by the civilizations of middle earth and thus have passed into legend.

As always, I appreciate your thoughts and videos. May I ask where you found the citations for Men's legends of stone giants as help for their buildings? I'm not familiar with that story. Also, I had the idea that hobbits weren't familiar with stone giants but had stories of trolls (large creatures that turned to stone at dawn) as referenced by Sam's song about one in The Fellowship.

I could have sworn you talked about the stone giants already.

I think giants were Maiar who helped build Arda. Since Melkor threw up the mountains to hinder Orome from traveling across Middle Earth, The Giants in Middle Earth cut off from the guidance of the Valar, tried their best to tear down the mountains one by one under the cover of the storms of Manwe and Ulmo. Stne is difficult to reode by wind and water, and these Giants in the Misty Mountains added the natural erosion by throwing house and bigger sized boulders down from the heights into the valley below simulating landslide and stone avalanches. In the past these giants may have aided elves, dwarves and human constructions by cutting and hauling stones from the mountains to the respective folk, and thus that aspect of the legends might be true. No amtter how it was done the mountains were slowly dismantled whether by careful planning or by boisterous, gleeful, violent games. As to the look of Giants I would assume their skin seemed rock like, with craggy features. Their skin rflecting the types of minderals that make up the mountains in which they resided. I think in their own way they were equal in power to Balrog and wizards, being Maiar initially. Maiar tasked to contruct Arda, and then on their own initiative to remove the Melkor made obstructions to Orome in Middle Earth I would think their are Giants still in Valinor even in the 4th age and beyond. Like Elves their bodies can die and be killed but their spirits live on and their forms can be reformed, like Gandalf the Grey was reformed in Gandalf the White.

IMO Bilbo had a little too much of the Gaffers home brew when he wrote this part in the Red Book of Westmarch

Maybe they were nature spirits originating in the same manner as the ants and the eagles and the dwarves that maybe they were not part of the original plan but were allowed later. Or maybe they are just parts of the world that were created in the music like the best theory about the nameless things.
