A referendum on the deal negotiated by Boris Johnson (which was nothing like what was promised in 2016) was a prefectly reasonable position to take. The petition for a people's vote on that deal got 6.8m signatures and was ignored by the government. I don't see why this one should be any different.

@barneyrubble1964Күн бұрын
There is no basis for a second election under our constitution, without a vote of no confidence in the government or Starmer himself going to the King and requesting Parliament be dissolved (which is about as likely to happen as Turkey's voting for Christmas). The King can call for Parliament to be dissolved but this might conflict with his duty to be politically neutral. The referendum however is different. Under the EUROPEAN COMMISSION FOR DEMOCRACY THROUGH LAW (VENICE COMMISSION) CODE OF GOOD PRACTICE ON REFERENDUMS there is a requirement for both sides to have equal opportunity to make their case. We were a signatory of this at the time of the referendum. Significant overspending breaches this and in Good Law Project v Electoral Commission and the subsequent investigation by the Electoral Commission leave did indeed over spend under the finance rules. The Code of Practice says over spending is a reason to null a referendum. However our political class are so scared that nobody will face the leave side down and that includes Starmer who did nothing in opposition and cannot bring himself to do anything now as PM

A politician, in the pocket of big pharma, with no expertise, telling scientists and doctors who studied it that their evidence meant nothing. And nothing was done. It's that simple. Directors don't get to put 500% of their income into pensions to avoid tax. Where are you getting that from? The cap is £60,000 per annum, set by the Tories which used to be £40,000 per annum.
@A190xxКүн бұрын
The black hole is that the government are spending more and more on things we do not need, are inefficient or over priced. FYI You can also pay large sums into your pension, which is not damaging the economy, but may well improve as everyone with ample pension is not a burden on the State at retirement. These rules were brought in during the 80s when many pensioners were entirely reliant on the State as they had never been incentivised to save for their retirement. And owners of businesses should be encouraged to do well to produce the taxes that pay for everything. The last budget has already caused the economy to contract, so now Rachel Thieves has reduced her tax revenue.

Change does not mean destroying small businesses. Change does not mean a stagnating economy. Change does not mean putting people in prison for social media posts. Change does not mean giving favour to non natives in the NHS queue's. Change does not mean uncontrolled, open border illegal immigration (something which they campaigned on heavily before the election. I know my local Labour MP's slogan being "Only Labour has a plan to stop the boats!"). None of this was in their manifesto. Labour won with a 20% share of a 70% turn out. Not even a 3rd of the country voted for them. Had we not had such a big split between Reform and Conservatives...the outcome would have been very, very different.
