The "rods from god" wouldn't need to be fired from a satellite _directly_ over the target if they had a halfway-decent propulsion system. It would require less fuel if they got the target right under the orbit, but they could probably get decently far from the orbit without needing too much if they had decent aerodynamic control surfaces. You could probably plot an orbit which would get close enough to most major potential enemies. (Of course, this means that launching such a station into orbit would be pointing a loaded weapon at not just potential enemies, but most of the world...)

The issue is getting it up there, and how easily it can be destroyed by a missile. Space any damage is going to be devastating explosive not required. Like nukes once you shoot the first one its game over.

I've seen a lot of comments saying that the military shouldn't have that much funding BUT think about this, what I'd we didn't have the funding for the military during ww2? we would lose.the military needs to funding just in case we get invaded or start a war

Militarizing space is not a stupid idea, but it's dangerous. Ideally, military weapons in Space should not belong to any country but be a property of the UN who could use as soon as any country uses space weapons without permission (outside of UN orders) in order to protect satellites and maybe avoid milliions of deaths, these weapons could also be used conventionnaly under the Un rules (voted by the UN council). But I'm stricly against any militarization (or privatization) of space. It's better that Space does not belong to anyone, the opposite would be extremely dangerous and will be a source of conflicts. On Earth, we have some areas in the Antarctica, or Svalbard that do not belong to anyone (Svalbard is part of Norway but is open to any scientist of any country who wishes to do some research there, but the necessity of being part of a country is not mandatory when nobody leaves in the area) and where weapons are forbidden, these areas are not a source of conflict and allow cooperation between nations without any risk, something as empty as space could easily have the same or a similar legislation.

+Evlboy I know, but it is also runned by countries who care about human rights. If China wants to do something stupid, France, the USA and the UK have a veto right to prevent it from doing so. If there is a clear enough and restrictive enough treaty, China and Russia will be forced to obey it or else they must leave the UN or start WWIII. UN is not perfect, but it's better than allowing China and Russia to freely develop weapons in space.

Space is already Militarized. GPS was created for the military. There's already a US Space Command, ran by the air force. There would be no weapons for offensive capabilities because a few 100 countries already agreed not to. Space Defence, on the other hand, would be awesome. Have the Space Force create defenses from Asteroids, and runs programs in clearing debris as even a small bolt could be dangerous to space assets when it's orbiting at 18,000mph.

I think the notion of a dedicated branch of the military for space is not inherently a bad idea, I just don't think we're at a point where it makes sense yet. Maybe sometime later this century, after a few decades or so it might make sense. But given that space isn't an actual theater for war yet (as in not real combat) and probably won't be anytime soon, it's better to keep the Airforce Space Command. So long as our military involvement in space is limited to dealing with satellites, what we have seems sufficient. As we start making the transition into heavier military involvement in space, I think it's better to take the Airforce and transform it into an Aerospace Command or some type of Space Navy deal. Let them deal with both space and some measure of normal military aviation, and then, eventually maybe leave terrestrial aviation to the Army, Marines and Navy if we ever get to the point that humanity is at in Sci-Fi series such as Halo. The other branches already operate their own combat aircraft anyways, so the argument could be made that the Airforce is going to be too redundant to justify keeping forever anyways. As of now, only some of their tasks are redundantly covered by the other branches, but over the next couple of centuries, we could transition the Airforce to be primarily dealing with space and aerospace military affairs and leave terrestrial aviation to the other branches. Looking at Halo again, I have a feeling that the ideal and probable eventual organization for our armed forces is going to be similar to the branches of the UNSC (minus Spartans and what not).

Thats not how it works (there are no explosives on a 'Rod from God' weapon, its explosive energy comes from kinetic energy and mass) That wasnt a kinetic weapon that exploded in Tianjin, it was poor maintenance and infrastructure resulting in hazardous material overheating in a cargo box. Port accidents and explosions happen somewhat frequently and with devastating effects: look at Beirut Lebanon as an example.

Now i think this needs saying here, while yes it is fun and interessting to speculate on this entire militarization of space thing, it will not happen for a VERY long time and will probably remain fiction. Now im no scientiest so i cant explain it very thorougly but the simple reason is that is WAY too expensive and slow, also lets not forget about cosmic radiation wich is something overlooked very often. I really don't see the point of a "space force"... defending satalites is fine, but at the same time it's the first step to actually keep weapons meant for earth up there. That's something I reeeeeeeeaaaalllly dislike. It's a new thread against civilists (cuz I doubt those weapons are precise enough to only kill one specific target) which is really hard to defend.... I never support war, but if there is one, i hate it even more when the innocents and civilists are suffering instead of the responsible leaders. So no, I don't really agree with you, the pros don't outweight the cons imo.
