Thanks to the lenses in the headset, the focal distance is 6ft in front of you. The screen is physically 1 inch away, but your language suggests our eyes would be focusing at 1in away from your face. As far as your eyes are concerned, the “screen” is 6ft away. Very few people can focus on things 1in from their face. The reduced blinking and reduced exposure to sunlight seems very real. But even so, in the Apple vision pro you’re more often looking around space, instead of staring at a single screen. Early days still before we’ll know the impact. But it’s worth pointing out that the focal distance is not 1in, it’s closer to 6ft.

I’m glad someone else understands this. Our eyes don’t have to focus to their minimum distance to use these headsets, they focus to 6ft in front of them like you mentioned. To our eyes, it’s about as much stress as looking across the room. The lenses of the headset focus the light for your eyes so they don’t have to bend the light in a way that looks further away.
@chaset3389
@chaset3389 2 ай бұрын
However, it's still not the same as looking around the room normally. Your eyes focus for things at different distances, but in the headset, everything is on a screen that is '6ft' away from you. It's better than 1 inch, but it's not like the display is accurately casting light such that your eyes flex to vary their focal distance as they would in the real world. Everything is 6ft away, right? I'd imagine that can still cause strain.

@@chaset3389As an VP, there seems to be a depth perception when looking into the headset. You do feel a sense of distance, how that actually correlates to one’s eye’s interpreting what it’s seeing would be very interesting to know. The VP has been in development for over a decade, I would think that APPLE has optometrist and ophthalmologist on hand to consult with development of this device… I would also think people at APPLE are aware of the movie the JERK, starring Steve Martin… 🤔

Where is it documented that the focal distance is 6ft and not 4ft or 8ft? I've been looking for that information so that I can get a correct prescription to use with the Vision Pro.

@@chaset3389 Your eyes looking at the same focal point for long periods can indeed cause eye strain in some people. For me, I don't notice it much even after hours of watching an entire movie.

Thanks for the video. I wanted to ask Since the screens have a fixed Focal Distance. Say 6ft. Would this would I would think be bad for the eyes. Since they are not changing focal distance and tend to stay at one focal distance. Like any muscle in the body if you do not work it it gets week.. Same for sitting at computer all day. That is why they tell you to look away every now and then.. Do you think there is a way they can fix that. Like have it change the focal distance for the screen. But then that might mess up corrective lenses. But if it could change the focal distance why can't they adjust for you script for your eyes as well? Just wondering the last part?

Thanks for this tech-enthusiastic video. But I would honestly have expected something along the lines an optometrician told me a few months ago, i.e. that those kinds of VR headsets are essentially being REJECTED by our eyes! Due to the fact that our eyesight is based on constantly front ward and back ward moving objects, instead of looking at an object that has constantly, for hours, the same distance from us = the two screens we're looking at in the headset. Weren't you aware of this?

I would love to see a semi-transparent lightseal, or one that can go dark and transparent from the AVP. I use it quite a bit outside, as it allows me to have a large monitor to my Mac while coding outdoors. But it would be nice to have the lightseal but have it be transparent.

A virtual display can be larger and appear further away than a normal computer display. So it might be less likely to induce near sightedness

Wow, interesting video about the possibilities of this technology. It will be interesting what data/studies come out when people start using these headsets more often. It's possible that it could actually be better for our eyes because the focal length is farther away than a phone or laptop screen.
@eon5323
@eon5323 2 ай бұрын
Nope. When you look at something close up, there's a thing called vergence accommodation conflict. It's what's giving people headaches. Your eyes are trying to look at something closer that the focal length the headset provides. Meta has prototypes that fix this, varifocal displays.
@LanceT.
@LanceT. 2 ай бұрын
@@eon5323 Yeah, interesting. I didn't even think of that component of comfort. I wonder if, for spatial computing, putting the screens/apps at the focal length of the headset would be more ideal for spending more time in the headset (at least until varifocal happens). For example, if the focal length is 4 feet, the virtual screens could appear to be 4 feet away.

11:00. I think the AVP drying out eye's isn't because you're looking at screens. 1) I look at screens all day anyway, and my eyes get significantly more dry FASTER with the AVP than looking at my 43" monitor. 2) I actively focused on blinking my eyes in the AVP, and they still dry out fast. I think the reason they dry out so fast is because of the AVP's fan, moving air around right next to your eyes, wicks moisture away from your eyes, and causes them to dry out faster. Like a dehumidifier attached to your face.

Speaking of weird 3D eye sets I went to my Optometrist a couple weeks ago, they put these things on my where I look and blink where 3D objects are. It determined my eyes were seriously out of aliment and my optometrist would discuss how to address it. She didn't, even though I brought it up. I got all kinds of gizmo tests and I figured it was just to boot the bill.

I got sick still haven’t found out what’s wrong but one of the symptoms is blurry vision. For some reason my vision becomes blurry when I eat or get tired or use my phone to watch content. This goes away after rest. My eyes are good it’s just whatever Is happening to me is causing this blurry vision. Whoever when I use my Apple Vision Pro I don’t start to get blurry vision like when I use my Iphone. I feel absolutely no strain on my eyes using the Vision Pro compared to my phone. If I start using my phone for a few minutes my eyes become blurry and I get tired/sleepy. On my Vision Pro I don’t get any of this. So I can say that the Vision Pro is healthier for the eyes than using your phone from my own unique experience that is affecting my eyes since I got sick.

You may be right, I have similar experience but with Meta Quest. I think because the virtual image is projected at about 1.3m distance through optics even though the screen is few cms away. Which also means that the eye lens does not have to focus hard like for phone/laptop screens.

It can't fix depth perception. That being said, you can definitely still use it like everyone else, even with just one eye. The whole depth perception thing is like trying to explain colors to a blind person.

Sure, sunlight is helpful for eyes - but the reason why being outside is good for preventing myopia is because you focus on far away objects (cars, houses, clouds, etc). Your eye physically elongates and reshapes itself when viewing objects too closely for too long (screens, phones, or simply being inside the house too much). That's why submarine personnel normally have vision issues and develop myopia. Since this is going to be inches away from your eyes - it's pretty obvious it's going to mess your eyes up with prolonged use (if you use the simplest of common sense). I'd have fun with these for sure, but not walk around all day with them. OUCH!

People pretend like apple vision pro is the start of VR. I followed VR back in 2014, saw it at Runefest 2015. The technology existed in Media since at least the 70-80s. Apple wasn't even the catalyst for mainstream VR. It hit mainstream with the Quest 2 when it became affordable and you didnt need to have an expensive PC to run it with a screen that isn't all blur. Also no casual consumer is carrying an apple vision pro, most people will look at it and then see the superior quest 3 thats no more expensive than console.
