Sanibel is special to my husband and me. We live in SC and had been there once and loved it. My husband was diagnosed with early onset dementia, so we decided to get away. Well, we drove to Sanibel to recapture the magic. We put down the windows, listened to ‘70’s music, and laughed the whole time! Thank you for the trip today!

Thanks, Shar, for taking us back to Lighthouse beach on Sanibel. I miss that place so much....but not the no-see-ums. You're a brave gal!! I giggled at the scallop with the googly eyes! LOL!! I enjoy pausing the video, after you've picked up a shell and guessing at what they are. Trying to keep my 71 year old brain, active. I did have a problem distinguishing the ribbed cantharus with the horse conch. I noticed the ribbed is a bit on the stumpy side where the horse has an elongated body. Am I correct about that? Anywhoo, thank you so much for taking me back home to see how much it has changed and how far along they've come. One day I'll be back and see it for myself, God willing. You sound much better, glad your on the mend. ❤ Take care of yourself, beautiful beach friend. 🏖 ❤ See you next Sunday!

There are more shells in the winter months, but no specific "season" for the different species. Any shell can show up at any time, but it's more likely to find good things after a storm or a good wind event.

When I saw the black scallop, I had a thought. May not be your style or might be gimmicky, or you may have already tried it, but here it is. Organizing shells like parfaits, band of one color followed by another and repeat. Or use three different bands of color, etc. Might be pretty to see in those tall glass jars you use. Orange and white bands like a cremesicle, black and white, pink and white. Again might be a contrived looking display as I do like your natural mixes in the jars. Maybe experiment with excess shells. Another reason I enjoy your videos: makes me think about how to further enjoy these beautiful and fascinating shells, good for the mind.

I saw this shell "art" in a frame that I'd like to replicate one day. It's all shells, but the art is the color, not the shell or the shape or the shell. The shells start black and go to grey, then tan and white, orange and then grey again. It's really lovely. So many idea - so little time!!

Some beautiful shells. Now a question, why are the Noseeums so bad at Sanibel and Ft. Myers? I don't remember that from years ago. And that Shark Eye, wow!
@SWFBeachLife6 ай бұрын
I don't get bit up on Fort Myers Beach, but Sanibel has always been bad for noseeums - just more so after the hurricane. ~ "Following Hurricane Ian, the no-see-um bug population on Sanibel Island has surged significantly. The hurricane created ideal breeding conditions for these pests by transforming freshwater bodies into brackish water environments with decaying plant material, which no-see-ums thrive on (WUSF ) (WGCU Public Media). Residents and workers on the island have reported that these tiny, biting insects have become much more pervasive, making outdoor activities particularly uncomfortable during dawn and dusk (SCCF)." AND those little buggers live in soil, not standing water, so spraying for them can be less effective.
@debbiejones62656 ай бұрын
I was eaten up the morning. I went shelling on Fort Myers the worst. Even my cousin couldn’t believe how bad from the pictures I sent her until we just went on vacation and she saw the scars all over my legs. I wore shorts, but I had a sun shirt on and my arms were fine. But my leg legs were covered in bites. And then when I use the bug spray that you recommended that worked very well but because I’ve never had noseeums at Fort Myers before, I didn’t wear it when I went out that day. Lesson learned
@SWFBeachLife6 ай бұрын
@@debbiejones6265 That is misery! I have never experienced the noseeums over on FMB. They only eat me alive on Sanibel. I have taken to wearing swim pants to avoid sunburn AND noseeums!

I’ve found a couple of wentletraps there but not much else. Looks like it’s time to try again. And regarding those evil no see-ums…. Can they not bite through any type of clothing? And does you bug stuff stay on in water? I get awful reactions to them that last a couple weeks so trying to find something to repel them.
@SWFBeachLife6 ай бұрын
The nosseeums can't bite through clothing, so I received zero bites on my arms and legs. My hands did get bit despite the bug spray, so I bought gloves for next time. I have had my difficulties over there as well, but at least I FINALLY found a few good shells at Lighthouse Beach.

Hi, was wondering what app you use for the tide
@SWFBeachLife6 ай бұрын
I use an app called Tides - I showed it in a previous episode: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZzTiXibmrpskLc
I think the little keyhole limpets are so cute!! We have a lot of limpets (Tacoma, WA, on Puget Sound), but they don't have the keyholes. I'm having a problem coming up with the page you showed that has the spot to click for beach walks with you. I get to your Etsy store page, but there's nothing about beach walks. Could you post a link, please? Thanks!

Yes or course! Here is the link to my page about beach walks: www.swfbeachlife.com/hire-me

Is there a special time of the day or year or condition when no-see-ums are peaty?
@SWFBeachLife6 ай бұрын
The noseeums love the early mornings and evenings, so they can be horrible until the sun comes up and once the sun starts going down again. They aren't so bad in the winter, but they are pretty terrible in the summer. They don't like a breeze so if there is a good wind they aren't too much trouble either but when they are bad they can be terrible!

What are the pants you are wearing made of? We are coming the 21st of this month and are staying near the lighthouse... I am terrified that our trip will be ruined by the no-seums. I've already purchased the big repellent you suggested. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Those pants are swim pants I picked up in case I was feeling lazy about putting on sunscreen OR I wanted to protect myself against the bugs. They work great! Any covering will help keep the bugs off you. Here is the Amazon link: amzn.to/3Vyej1S The bugs stopped biting around 8am, so depending on when you get out to the beach you may not encounter them but it's always good to be prepared!

The bridge fee to get to this beach is 9 dollars. Plus parking. I was just there. We found alphabet cone snorkeling plus a bunch of other beautiful stuff snorkeling. I live half hour north of Tampa. My grandson just found a shark eye that size at pass a grille beach. If you go to pass a grille go to dog beach and go along until you get to the rocks. It says private but I have been going there five years and nobody has said anything and there are other people walking through. I am not sure if they mean prive resident because once you get uo to sidewalk to the pool it says prive. We found beautiful stuff just walking and more digging.

Hi. Did you find some Venus Clams?
@SWFBeachLife6 ай бұрын
I have found imperial venus clams on the East Coast. On this coast I've found lady-in-waiting venus clams.

I keep thinking that I see some in your home area videos.

Not the same at the lighthouse without that big root ball that was on the beach. I always wanted that stump.
@SWFBeachLife6 ай бұрын
I think you are referring to Lovers Key. That stump was absolutely epic. I'm glad I have lots of photos and video of it.
@TerryChilders-sv7he6 ай бұрын
@@SWFBeachLife one near the point by the lighthouse too. It was beautiful, not as big as the one on lovers key. It was more like a huge driftwood tree.

@@TerryChilders-sv7he Oh yes! Sorry, I know the one you’re talking about. Yes, anything that wasn’t either really established or cemented down is now gone 🥲

Do you ever make jewelry with them?
@SWFBeachLife6 ай бұрын
My husband was making jewelry from shells for a hot second but I seem more interested in doing mirrors and picture frames.
