@charleslowe5223 жыл бұрын
We will eventually get to see it with just a turbo. You'll see how well it responses to boost. Dan Jost was running a series 2 in his Grand National, he had a Borgwarner turbo and he was making about 700whp. In this instance his 3800 was paired with a built 4L80. Unfortunately the company that built his 3800 hammered the main caps on, instead of installing them correctly and main cap 3 broke I believe or something along those lines. I believe he said he was running about 20 psi of boost in that setup. Instead of buying another 3800 and rebuilding it himself, he instead bought an LV3 4.3L v6. He then bought a Holley High Ram intake and modified it to fit the heads of the LV3, so he could run port injection. For some reason he replaced the heads with new ones from GM parts direct and they were not very expensive. These heads flow more out of the box then aftermarket performance heads for the 3.8L found in the Grand National. They actually flow a little or are on par with Buick Motor Sports fully ported Stage II heads. Dan got his 4.3L running and I believe he said he was making the same wheel hp as with the 3800, but he's only running about 9 or 10 lbs of boost. I was impressed with LV3 heads, that I ordered a pair from GM parts direct and I only paid $168 for the set.

It's worth noting that all that sweet streetable torque in the compound 3800 is coming at much, much lower boost levels than the peak of 23+psi. Those >15psi boost numbers are only in the last 1000 or so RPM. The 3800 is tripping on the stock cam and spiking pressures because of it. Those boost pressures are going to come way down with a new cam, with little loss down low, while the 4200 would have to move the torque curve even higher to a less drivable zone with the equivalent can. Now an M114 or TVS 1900 on the 4200...

The problem with both is the issue of packaging and intended usage, regardless of how much power you can squeeze out of them. Unless you are keeping the 3800 in the car it came with, you are likely stuck using it in another FWD vehicle, and stuck with the AT it came with. Richard really had to dig to find a manual transmission bell housing to mount the 3800 on the dyno, so transplanting it into a RWD vehicle will be difficult if you want a manual. Now Richard has already started that the 4200 is a very long and tall engine, so that has to be taken into consideration. In answering a question to me, the 4200 bellhousing bolt pattern is not compatible with the typical Chevy SB pattern, so without an adapter, you'd have to use the transmission out of the vehicle it came with, which probably isn't capable to handle the power of a high boost 4200. But I still think it would be a fun swap in a 1967-1972 or squarebody pickup.
@charleslowe5223 жыл бұрын
The 3800 bolts up the 4L60, which can be built to handle some power. The person who helped Richard get the 3800 up and running with the Holley, Brian Pryes swapped the 3800 series 3 and a built 4L60 into his 1987 Regal T. Running a Precision 6466 turbo, at about 18psi and I believe his car is putting down about 700whp. Don't get me wrong, I think the Atlas is pretty bad ass and I am thinking that I am going to go to boneyard and get one. Just to have one, like the LC9 aluminum 5.3L I have setting in my garage.

Like Richard mentioned, the F-Body used the 3800 V6. The F-Bodies also used the 2.8 / 3.1 / 3.4 V6 for many years. And they have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. So basically, any 3rd or 4th gen F-Body with a V6 will have a RWD transmission you can use.

This is an apples to avocados comparison. The displacements are not close. One is overhead cam, the other is pushrod. The packaging is vastly different. The 3800SC is a decent small package that makes good torque for its size, but the supercharger is just holding it back from its true potential. The inline 6 is a better configuration but harder to get into small engine compartments, and its true potential hasn't really been explored. They're both interesting, but really not comparable in any way, other than they both have 6 cylinders. I agree with others that the last generation 4.3L v6 would be a lot closer of a comparison. At least the displacement is similar. The biggest advantage I see for the 3800 is that it is a small and fairly light package that has a ton of availability. The LS completely stole its thunder, because most people would prefer an 8 to a 6. Plus, it just sounds UGLY. I'm a fan of the 3800 over the LS, but I can even understand why everyone chooses an LS truck motor for their builds... cheap, v8 horsepower with an unlimited aftermarket.

I don't know if the bypass valve is a large enough orifice to make that work correctly or if it would create a restriction and hinder performance? The misconception of parasitic loss of blower is common but it actually becomes neutral to positive as internal pressure rises and the rotors try to drive the engine thru the belt, Detroit used this characteristic in their diesels for decades and other manufacturers used energy recovery with an exhaust driven turbine to a gear drive successfully too if you wanted to google scania for example

What your doing, posting these videos... I love it! Don't stop! Another comment mentioned Northstar engines and it got me thinking. I'm seriously considering getting a Fiero and doing an engine swap with either a Supercharged V6 3800 or a V8 Northstar engine. Both being the most compatible for a swap. Between the two I'm really curious which one responds best to modifications and overall performance. And thank you again for posting these vids. I love em!!
@Silkmaster42003 жыл бұрын
A lot do is top swap. Basically 9.4 in 1 compression short block adding supercharger and heads application on top NA. Reason why do that. It responds better out of the hole taking off and better times on the track. Other reasons too. Be cool do top swap NA with supercharger and heads. Be very close to the 4200 power. I think anyway.
@tuningwithstyx3 жыл бұрын
L36 rods won't be as strong as the L67/L32 rods though. You can also make up for the compression difference by adding 6.67% more boost to the lower compression engine by my math.
@Silkmaster42003 жыл бұрын
@@tuningwithstyx people been doing that for years. Series III rods are stronger. Powdered Titanium i think. It’s better little higher compression than low compression. Depends on the engine. 3800 work better top swap. Talk to ZZP. That’s for superchargers. Turbos probably better for low compression. But not too low though. Might bog out.

History of Australia. Not that long ago, large groups of Australians would undergo a pilgrimage to a place called "Mt Panorama" to watch a thing called "The race". While in this holy of holy places large amounts of ritual alcohol would be consumed by the disciples of Ford and Holden(GM). Due to the followers believing in different Gods and the large amount of heavenly ale being drunk sometimes punches , bruises, headaches, and large fines would occur. Even though things are different today to associate Barra with GM at the hill, would be an extreme blasphemy. :) have a good one.

Don't sleep on the 3800... in America everyone seems to think it's a slouch but take a look at what the aussies have done with that motor. There's a race team down under making well over 1k and running 7s. Those v6s are absolutely wicked and don't need a whole lot of $$$ to get there.
@reggiewest27023 жыл бұрын
Boost is resistance to flow. So you are getting the same amount of power with much less resistance in the 4200. It’s not a great comparison using a compound on one and turbo only on the other. That turbo takes forever to spool up on the 4200. Can you imagine the 3800 trying to spool that? Get the correct size turbo and run it on both motors. That would be a good test.

For the 2007 models, the 5.3l trailblazer was rated 11hp more, almost a rounding error, but was a half second quicker in the 1/4.
