What works? What doesn't? Porsche 914 engine inspection before removal

I'm restoring Califiornia / smog spec version of the same '75 here in the UK. Looks to be the same spec as yours, except mine also has EGR. Despite having just enough paperwork when I bought it to show that it really did spend all it's life in California until being imported to the UK in 2016, it's far from rust free. Interesting that you had the problem with the LH engine lid hinge. I did too, except mine was causing the front edge of the lid to hit the bulkhead. I've had the shell stripped, and after that, the cause was obvious. The hinge bracket on the bulkhead had only originally been welded on with 1 spot weld. The right hand one had 3 or 4. The bracket had pivoted around this one weld, pulling the hinge out of alignment. May be worth looking closely at the spot welds on yours too if the cause of the problem wasn't obvious. There is no access to put more spot welds on the bracket (they top edge of the bulkhead is double skinned), so I tig'd both sides to the bulkhead.
