Our society faces multiple crisis - culture wars, unprecedented dissatisfaction with democracy, vast inequalities, a climate and ecological emergency - but where is the alternative?
In his new book, Free and Equal: What Would a Fair Society Look Like?, Daniel Chandler argues that the ideas we need are hiding in plain sight, in the work of the twentieth century's greatest political philosopher, John Rawls. Although Rawls revolutionised philosophy - he is routinely compared to figures such as Plato, Hobbes and Mill - his distinctive vision of a fair society has had little impact on politics, until now.
In this talk Daniel Chandler will explore how Rawls’s ideas can rehabilitate liberalism as a progressive public philosophy, and point the way towards a practical agenda that would reinvigorate democratic politics and transform, or even transcend, capitalism. #LSESTICERD

"Free and Equal: What Would a Fair Society Look Like?" This book is a clarion call to make John Rawls' vision of a fair society into reality. But it is the readers who have the moral duty to be active in making this kind of transformation happen. Authors are like Generals in a war. They need an army to turn the winning strategy into victory. Still speaking metaphorically, the readers have to be that army.

After living for 40 years in a communist society, where the highest earner could not, by law, have a salary larger than 6 times the lowest salary (eg. the CEO of a bank vs the janitor ), where everybody had a house (either rented by the state, or bought under very easily termed loans from the state), where everybody had a workplace (virtually no unemployment)……I can tell you that it does not work. A society starting from the idea that people should be equal is doomed to fail. The less able will always be the majority, and the more able (a small minority) will be asked to think and work and invent for the rest……This is not inducive to progress and prosperity….Go ask anybody who lived in Eastern Europe during the Cold War.

To imply that because things didn't work out in the old eastern block, it means that any or all efforts to improve inequality are misguided, seems to be a pretty large leap of logic, and not borne out by many other examples. The idea that people should be equal helped to bring about the ends to things like indentured servitude and slavery, which has brought prosperity to millions. Also, there is vast spread of options between a world where CEOs only make 6 times that of a janitor, and our current situation where the average American CEO makes 344 times that of the average worker.

Progressive policies are only viable in countries where their plutocracies allow it. Scandinavia is the only area that comes to mind.
