For anyone who says something along these lines *We should help Earth instead of going to space* The problem isn't money, we have more than enough, but you get diminishing returns at some point. And I'd argue we largely have the technology needed. Further utilization would lead to more development and innovation. So that's not the problem either. The problem is the lack of long-term policy, and an economically viable plan. It wouldn't matter if we strip out the entire space program, because that wouldn't help anything. Colonizing space isn't mutually exclusive with reducing our impact on Earth, we can - and most likely will - do both. But we need better leaders and more entrepreneurs to make the change down here happen.

David K thank you I’m tired of people saying “stop space exploration help the poor” when in reality that would make our situation worse. That money would be stripped from the economy lowering inovetikn leaving many jobless and rendering even more people in poverty. And not only that but NASA and private companies are responsible for almost everything we use on a daily basis. The technology that was crafted innovated and designed for space travel has been applied to earth practices. Like velcro, robotic sensors (now used for advance prosthetics ect) 1/3 of all cameras contain tech jpg used to miniature muse and still provide detail accurate picture for scientific use (applied to camera like the 1 in ur phone) memory-foam, wireless headphones ect the list goes on. Now all of this happens while giving nasa the scraps of the plate (in terms of money) we should really be putting more money into the space industry to find ways to make more new products boosting the economy and getting poverdised people help from this tech not the other way around

I agree and there is also a bigger picture...If humanity doesn't make a concerted effort to spread beyond our solar system, the Voyager and Pioneer spacecraft might one day be the only evidence we ever existed. The sun is going to roast the Earth (and probably Mars) then vaporise it. It might be over a billion years away, but even that might not be enough time for us to succeed. A self sustaining colony on Mars would just be a tiny step, sorta like the first multicellular life on Earth on the way to becoming humans.

@@rea280 Yeah. Ironically to some people, a number of the technologies needed to settle space could be used down here, and vice versa - a positive feedback loop. If you want to settle another planet, you need to be incredibly sustainable. As an example: Food needs to be grown as efficiently as possible. You don't have a lot of room, and resupply takes a couple years - so hydro/aqua/aeroponics and vertical farms would all be required in space, but also be incredibly useful on Earth, as deforestation is a problem, and Agriculture contributes a lot to that. And all those ways of growing food greatly reduces your footprint, and even water usage. That's just one example. Energy storage, solar, nuclear, water purification, recycling, new mining/manufacturing practices that don't require fossil fuels, and more are all required in space, and could also be used down here. So that kind of development would spur innovation on both fronts.

And it doesn't matter how badly we want to protect our wildlife, if we go extinct - and an Asteroid wipes all of our efforts in one swoop. Now, I don't think that's going to happen _anytime_ soon. We've got plenty of time, but it's for reasons like that, why I don't understand arguments against space colonization. It's going to happen at some point, and if it isn't us, it's going to be someone else who records our history and wonders why we never took the final step; or it'll be no one, and Earth gets scorched. Wiping away not only all life, but everything we've ever done, and everything we'll ever do, forever. It'll be like we never even existed.

When they talk about self-sufficiency, they're not talking about oxygen, water or food. Those things are easy to produce. They're talking Mars having the industrial capacity to mine its own rare elements and produce its electronics without relying on industrial or electronic supplies from Earth. Mars needs to be able to repair and produce all industrial equipment independently to be truly self-sufficient, and that's why they say it'd need about 1 million people.

Politically I would wonder how this would work though. What country would they be associated with? How are they going to enforce laws etc? Will there be a tax for the people on Mars going back to Earth? I feel like that just like past colonization, Mars would eventually break away from Earth when the colony becomes big enough, and would most likely end up overtaking earth hundreds of years in the future. The actual problem is the atmospheric density. Plants would suffocate due to how little carbon dioxide is actually there.

Mars is too small for a proper atmosphere. CO2 levels were pretty high on Earth pre life also, but the atmosphere was thick, so water vapor stayed around. Artificially produced Oxygen would work, but supply has to be replenished as has that of water. Mars is unsustainable and can not just be brought beyond a tipping point and then work as Earth,

I think underground colony is the way to go, it's relatively easy and it has so many advantage . Nuclear will be the best deal but the trouble will be to fuel for it... The biggest trouble will be the gravity, it's less than eart so this will cause trouble in a medium timeline.

Our biggest trouble won't be the gravity. It is up there, but it is no where near close the biggest problem. The biggest problem is Mars magnetosphere. Since it has a weak magnetosphere people won't be able to terraform the planet because space and solar storms would destroy everything and throw it all into space. The most viable housing option for a big colony on Mars right now is a pressurized glass dome. There will be nothing else better then that unless we can learn to change Mars magnetosphere or atleast protect Mars from the solar storms. If we can do that then terraforming is possible. Again, just like you said after we can solve the Magnetosphere option which we have no Idea of how to yet then we can focus on the gravity problem, but we can't change the gravity on the Red planet because we'd need to increase the Planets size by a huge amount. However, that problem of gravity could be easily fixed if they put a rule to exercise for a few hours, or you went in depressurized buildings a lot.

Surely there must be opportunities to live underground on Mars, intuition tells us cave systems are there. Cave systems exist here on Earth so why not on Mars. If they do exist there then it would be great to explore them.

Moon is actually easy. NASA has a ton of hardware and data about moon due to several cancelled lunar programs and actually is working a program to build a space station in orbit of the moon by 2024. When you talk about a one million person colony being self sufficient, you should qualify it. Yes they would need to produce all the bulk supplies such as air, water, water and fuel. But they would not be able to produce some things like advanced microchips. Just running the fab line would be hard, when you add in the supply chain needed, a million people is not even close I can see all the people rushing to say that all the companies that supply the fab don't need that many people. But each of those companies need specialized supplies that have to come from somewhere. This repeats for several levels before you have a complete system that does not need imports from Earth. Just producing basic office and home supplies is going to be a big strain on the colony.

Keep in mind that computer chips are light and small. You could ship hundreds of thousands in one trip. But if local production was deemed to be important enough, the colonists could develop their own home grown electronics based on tech that cannot compete with silicon on earth. An example would be 3D printed conductive plastic electronics. It would be slow and bulky compared to earth tech but if there was enough demand I think it could be done.

As many SciFi shows/movies as I've seen in my lifetime, I can't believe that I never even conceived of the idea of using/building a dome(s) on Mars. Now that I've heard him say it, and seen the pictures of the idea, I'm wondering about some things. Would the dome(s) be something that would solely be for allowing building structures and possibly plant based life to exist on the surface rather than having to be buried under rock and sand, and the plants be restricted inside of those buried structures? Or, would these dome(s) be built in such a way that they would be So protective that humans could actually take the risk of walking around openly on the surface without the use of Any protective space suit or breathing apparatus whatsoever. These two concepts are Vastly different from one another and would make a Huge difference to me. If it was the latter, then I am Way more excited at the prospect of colonizing Mars than I Ever was previously. It's one thing to have to live in buried shelters for hundreds or more likely closer to one hundred thousand years while working out how to properly Terraform Mars. But, if while we were working out the logistics of it, we were able to build smaller scale city-like domed structures that were suitable for human life, And work out a way around that pesky 1/3 Earth's gravity, then the idea of starting colonies on Mars has suddenly become much Much more appealing to me!

In fact any colony would have to be at least 25 ft. underground, maybe more, to achieve radiation protection similar to Earth's surface. And that doesn't help getting there. Can't sheathe Mars crafts in 25 ft. of rock--too much fuel would be required. Only an artifical Van Allen belt would work, and we don't know how to do that or even if it's possible. Colonists might not be able to return to an Earth gravity environment BTW.

That's actually quite easy. Colony construction along with power generation can be done via automation. You send automated construction bots with needed initial resources from Earth ahead of the colonists and instruct them to use needed resources from Mars to construct a habitat for humans along with everything else. That way, by the time Humans arrive, majority of the colony is already constructed. Also, one other thing that no one mentioned is use of Geothermal energy for power generation. Food is easy enough as it was already mentioned - use of fully automated vertical farming systems which use hydroponics and aeroponics coupled with volksgardens method of growing crops (aka, forcing them to fight against gravity which accelerates their growth by 3 to 5 x - this is old technology available since 1974). Food and water production can be accomplished in another manner too... via molecular manufacturing (which we had since 2015)... And we already also had AI controlled atomic scale manufacturing since 2018. However, as it was established, Mars does have its own water supply... Since drilling would be needed to reach it, might as well use it as a way to not just reach water, but also Geothermal energy. Though, energy can also be generated through use of Thorium power stations (a form of nuclear which is a lot safer/cleaner vs Uranium). Then there's obviously Solar and Wind power as well.| If the habitat itself is designed to incorporate photovoltaic properties into its hull (which is more than doable), you actually wouldn't require separate solar panels. This of course would require we design structures that actually last (none of this planned obsolescence garbage) - and this is feasible as well. We also developed programmable metamaterials since 1974 which have the ability for self-repair and self-maintenance (if required - naturally, if you DESIGN a material to last, it wouldn't need this necessarily - or would require it in a bare minimum).

Honestly I think it'd be more effective to bombard mars with like the entire asteroid belt, or at least a good chunk of it, to increase it's mass and try and re-melt the core so that it's magnetosphere can start back up on it's own. From there, grab the ice asteroids and continue bombardment to get it's water levels up, and cap it off with stealing a shit tonne of certain gasses from elsewhere in the solar system except earth to flesh out it's atmosphere. (You'd also need to time and place most of those asteroid impacts so that they accelerate Mars and push it's orbit further out or we might end up interfering with Earth's when we increase Mars's mass.)
