This is one scenario that the Gnu Public License (GPL) was designed to prevent. Especially the requirement that any additions / improvements / changes to the code be made Open Source as well is what prevents the "Extend -> Exterminate" part of the scenario. Which is why we should definitely use the GPL more often. We have a lot to thank RMS (Richard Stallman) for.

The problem is that with enough money, you can just nullify that through lobbying. What matters to me is control over software sources. With Windows 11, they've already pushed a release update that prevents Athlon 64 X2 or coreduo (+ everything older) from working. The TPM bypass still won't work. This video creeped me out so badly - but also made me laugh so much! Creeped me as someone who used Windows for the last 20-something years, and laugh because a year ago I FINALLY moved to Linux, so now I can laugh about those things. Great work! I thing you were right on the money. Every word here is on one hand pure satire, but on the other hand 100% real.

Bro casually forgot that Cannonical dis exactly this. They were just shy of removing the ability to change default apps or access the terminal. Opt-out marketing? Yes. Ads in the OS? Absolutely! This is why I love Linux though - some asshat company decides to pull a Redmond and we can all just say, “No, I do not accept this”. Then we either use a different distro or we fork!

Would have been even funnier if he added an additional tie or one bow tie on top of the first tie per tier. xD But that would have been an extra USD 9.99 per tie per month with an annual auto renewing subscription!

This is why I am on Debian. They have a democratic internal structure and are not seeking profit. Their focus on stability also means they aren't going to go for fads. I think they will always remain quite behind compared with operating systems created by profit seeking companies, but they're like a backstop from this kind of enshittification.

I think the opposite side of the coin is Arch Linux. It’s also a community-maintained distro, but spearheading the use of bleeding-edge packages and new technologies. Sure, Fedora uses them day 0, but that is a corporate distro by Red Hat. Day 1 is still good compared to day-0 access.
@docopoper9 ай бұрын
@@commentarysheep I'm very glad we have arch too. Having a large body of users using software as soon as it comes out is a very important service to provide to the linux community. And it is waaaay better to have two backstops than just one. Both are great options, I only picked Debian over arch out of personal taste.

If Windows does become a subscription i bet that 50% of their users will go to either mac, chromeos or linux at the rate they are locking features behind activation.
@katanah31958 ай бұрын
I am your average... opposite of a power user. I use Windows because it came with the computer, and I don’t really want to have to get my hands in the guts of my computer's OS, and I've heard so many horror stories about users like me getting absolutely screwed by our own incompetence on every other option that I refuse to even bother messing with Linux as a toy or novelty. That said, if Windows makes their OS a subscription... the only thing I hate more than computer junk I don't understand is expensive subscriptions. And I hate Apple's walled garden BS and expensive status symbol hardware, and I've used Chromebooks and they suck. I want something that you just install it and it works, that will run an internet browser, run office tools like a word processor and a spreadsheet program, and run my games. The horror stories have convinced me that Linux is not that... but I will definitely have to at least try the most recommended beginner distro if MS does something frustrating enough, and I suspect a lot of computer users on my level of understanding and comfort are in the same position. Today I read a paper from 1999 criticising the way MS has built an empire selling OSs and how they're a house of cards and even their huge low understanding userbase could get pissed off enough and learn enough about computers to try something else and stop buying not just the products themselves but the slick marketing they come with, and it's all still relevant. If anything, that paper is more prescient 25 years later than it was at the time. Well, that part anyway. The guy's got some political views that were questionable at the time and really didn't age well.

@@cchutney348 You don't really need NatworkManager. You don't really need systemd (speaking of modularity also). And many such things, not using which is pretty straightforward but for some reason another abstraction is laid upon still.
@cameronbosch12139 ай бұрын
@justapotota4330 I mean, technically, the BSD and MIT permissive licenses do allow this type of commercialization. Copyleft licenses like the GPL and AGPL do stop it to some degree because you can just (theoretically) fork the changes because anybody using copyleft code has to provide source code to its users/customers and can't stop them from redistributing the code under the same terms of the license.
