Let’s talk about what would happen if you went two weeks with less than five hours of sleep each night.
Getting seven to eight hours of sleep is the best way to support a healthy body. But many people aren’t getting enough quality sleep.
There are so many health benefits of sleep. This is when our bodies recover, burn fat, and detoxify the most.
Here are the top side effects of not getting enough sleep:
• Fatigue
• Mood changes
• Poor cognitive function (with memory, focus, concentration)
• Sympathetic hyperactivity
• An increased risk of cardiovascular problems, stroke, and diabetes
• Weight gain
• Fatty liver
• Immune system impairment
• Poor recovery from injury, stress, or exercise
If you have sleep apnea or you're a heavy snorer, you may experience an imbalance of oxygen and CO2, which can cause poor sleep.
Other potential severe side effects of sleep apnea can include:
• Brain atrophy
• Increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular incidents, stroke, and diabetes
There are many different natural things you can try for sleep apnea. Check out my other videos for more information.
What to do if you’re not getting enough sleep:
1. Take a nap
2. Keep you’re room cool (between 60 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit) and leave your window open if possible
3. Try to keep the humidity in your room at 50%
4. Turn off all electronics in your room when you’re sleeping
5. Don’t overeat or undereat in the evening, and make sure to consume enough protein
6. Don’t eat too late in the evening
7. As it gets dark, start dimming the lights and avoiding blue light

Ask any over the road truck driver. Just because we are mandated to take a 10 hour break doesn't mean we get solid sleep. Parking in a noisy area, parking so your bed is at an odd angle, too hot to sleep, too cold to sleep, parking in a bad area and sleeping with gun in hand are just a few examples.

True story Doc, I worked the graveyard shift for 15 years. Lived on 5-6 hour sleep from Mon-Fri and would stay awake all day Friday to take care of my kids and reset my circadian system to be awake in the day on weekends. A Sunday evening nap before work and it was back to the weekly grind. During a check up a few years later I told my story to a cardiologist, he looked at me and said “You should be dead!” He had apparently tried that shift for two years and wanted to quit being a physician. Thanks for everything you do to keep us informed Doc!

My heart had a hard time and i got depressed. Ever since 2015 I have been recovering from this. And thanks to your videos and advice I love my life again. I sleep about 6 hours a night. When i wake up, I'm not tired/sleepy. Im not moody, or depressed. I feel all around just fine. When i was a kid i slept 8 hrs all the time and was always tired. I think the younger you are, the more sleep you need. Heres a lil tip for emf around you when you sleep, put your phone in airplane mode so its not searching for a signal all the time. Those text messages and calls can wait. If you need the phone because you might be expecting a emergency call, put it across the room. Our phones put off an enormous amount of emf especially since most of them are 5G now, which is another serious health consequence. Something i don't recall this channel ever mentioning.

Mad how you mention 5g. I don't know anything about that and WiFi signals, but I've noticed that since I started to put my phone on aeroplane mode with WiFi on (incase of emergency calls etc) my quality of sleep improved. Either a mad coincidence or there's something to the lack of 5g as you allude to.

I’m 57 with five adult children and for many years I didn’t get much sleep and often I just couldn’t go to sleep or would wake up many times a night and able to get into a deep sleep. Over the past three years I’ve done lots of research on it and finally am at a point where I can sleep 7 to 9 hours a night and I actually feel good. When I didn’t get much sleep, I couldn’t hardly even drive to the grocery store and back without falling asleep while driving. Long trips required that I pull over several times and take naps. I was always foggy, brained and pretty grumpy but tried not to be. I understand being in a position where it’s impossible to work in the time to get enough sleep. I was that way for years. It really took a toll on my health in many ways.

However, if I go back to bed and fall back to sleep, I will get maybe two more hours of sleep, but I'll feel so groggy and cranky for the rest of the day. Great-Grandmother, at nearly 104, never exceeded 5 hours of sleep daily. Grandfather, now 81, also slept just 4-5 hours. My father and I follow suit, sleeping 5-6 hours a day. What's the implication? Each body varies, considering sleep quality (REM) and diet. Even 8 hours may result in tiredness, low spirits, and lacking drive. It's crucial to discover what works best for you. The way I see this. Don't spend 1/3rd of your life sleeping. Become physically fit, get rid of stress so that your body requires the minimal amount of time to regenerate itself.

There are genetic freaks (anomalies) that require less sleep. It’s not a flex-you did nothing to earn it. It’s simply your genetics-be grateful instead of projecting the false narrative that it’s a “life choice” to enjoy more of life that could lead someone ELSE down the path of ill health. Not sure if there’s a relation but a lot of politicians have this anomaly and a whole lot of them are sociopaths.

A quality sleep involve quantity as time is require for your body to enter and complete a full sleep cycle. What more important is when you sleep. Sleeping for 8 hours from 2am is vastly different then 8 hours of sleep from 10pm. Both is 8 hours of sleep... However, one is beneficial to your health while the other will destroy it. Also, not getting enough hours every nights will never be healthy. Just because your body is used to it and you're awake and functioning after only 5 hours of sleep doesn't mean you're healthy. You're surviving but not thriving.

So I got diagnosed with sleep apnea and was asked if I was tired all the time. I didn’t think I was and they told me I was getting about 3 hours of actual sleep per night. I ended up getting a sleep apnea mouth piece as it was the cheapest attempt to resolve the issue and now I sleep 7 & 1/2 hours every night. I wake up feeling rested and energized and also I no longer wake up with migraines/headaches. My digestive track has also gotten much better. It changed my life by actuality sleeping the correct amount of time that my body needed to rest. I suffer from migraines and they’re almost gone which I take nurtec if they ever come. I think there’s so many more problems due to lack of sleep than we actually know about and with time and research it will only discover more issues that are currently unknown 🤔

A few years ago I was having bad memory issues, I had to think hard to say names of things like ‘doornob’ and even my kids names. I thought I had a brain tumor. My doctor asked if I slept well, I said of course, I sleep 8 hours a day. After work I would crash for 3.5 hours, then wake up and work until 1 or 2 am, and sleep 4.5 hours after that. She told me that was the equivalent of sleep deprivation, techniques used to torture people and break them down mentally! She recommend a trial of 8 hours of sleep for 2 weeks. My memory came back!! I am so thankful for that doctor not saying I was depressed or something. Whenever I don’t get my sleep my mind slips back into really bad memory loss. I had trouble getting more than 6 hours sleep, I had very little, often no deep sleep, and also an elevated resting heart rate. This gave me many of the symptoms Dr Berg described in the video. Credit where due, my long time friend noticed that my worst symptoms coincided with increased consumption of vinegar. She suggested a trial of periods of cutting out vinegar, including pickles, from my diet and noting the results. Her observation proved correct, and the trial has been repeated three times now with a strong correlation of cause and effect. I don't have the resources to do more than a n = 1 trial, so Dr Berg, if you could carry out proper testing you may be able to establish a link.

Now I have impaired memory and cognition, brain fog, chronic fatigue and a heart rate that stays above 100 without medication to slow it down. The worst part is that I know what's coming and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it. I think I'm a perfect example of how inept and uncaring the VA Healthcare System has become.

It's not only getting enough sleep but quality of sleep. The problem to tackle is being able to sleep all the way through rem the deepest part of the sleep cycle because that is also the time when the body repairs itself or deep sleep. Unfortunately it can occur during the morning hours precisely when most of us have to wake up for school and work, therefore robbing the masses of critical body and mind repairing for years to come, generation upon generation.

I had zero trouble falling asleep, but 1-2 hours later, I would be wide awake and only catch a bit before time to get up. I developed systolic hypertension, calcium in the arteries for starters. It all culminated with very sporadic chest pains and a soft blockage of the LAD, and cysts covered adrenal glands. After a stent and I started keto and supplementation to fight calcium buildup (k-2 and magnesium among others) my sleep has went back to more my usual 6-8 hrs of total "black out" and waking naturally just as before dawn rises. How do I know it is natural waking? For me, that is I start have mild video like dreams as I come up. It's all gentle.

Those baby and toddler years are difficult in the sleep department… But hold onto hope because it truly does get easier. I know it might be difficult to think this right now but you will look back on these days and miss them. I remember being so tired and rocking my newborn in the middle of the night while my three year old finally started sleeping peacefully… I remember just knowing as difficult as it was I was going to miss it. I kind of felt like if I reminded myself of that it would make it easier. I would pray while I rocked and thank God that I was blessed to have these children and thanked Him also for even the difficult times. Well, 20+ years later I realize I was right. I would love to go back and hold my babies again. Rest with them when you can. You have to be kind to yourself like that and realize things will smooth out eventually. For now take care of you while you take care of them.

My wife sleeps terribly. Her brain never calms down. I wish I could find a way to help her get more rest, especially now that she's 6 months pregnant

Dr. Berg thank- you again for the pearls of wisdom! What is your advice for night owls on the grave yard shift? Also, can you talk about the 4-hour sleep study as it seems like a healthy range some have adopted. My guess is that it's 4 hours of quality delta sleep ect.. which i hear takes 1 week to adjust to.

I am 71. I have always required a lot of sleep…I need 11 or 12 hours of sleep. If I don’t get that sleep my heart races and my whole day is shot from chronic fatigue.

I'm 34 yrs old. I used to live alone with lot of stress and 4-5 hrs sleep at nights. I turned 30 and my hairs started turning gray. Then i got married to a suburban stay at home girl, and now i sleep 7-8 hrs a night, slowed down gray hairs and my brain is much more active now with boosted productivity and moods. So glad i made the right decision.

Do you need to sleep all at one time? I tend to wake up and be awake for an hour or so, then go back to sleep.

Most indigenous people sleep in two blocks of 3 hours with waking time in between.

Same. After about 5 hours, I wake up with my mind alert. I may or may not feel a need for a nap later on.

I came straight to the comments!!! Even paused the video cause I go off of 5-6 hours of sleep every night and anything more than that, I'm not energized the same. So I believe it depends on who YOU are.. everyone different

I'm 53 and I still sleep 7-10 hours regularly. People cannot believe I'm 53. I love being asleep more than any other activity, so for me it is not wasted time. I do miss out on mornings. But when I've got up early I'm just not a morning person!

Hi Dr Berg! Could you please make a video about chronotypes? Because there are harmful myths circulating that you can change your chronotype. My whole life I was being gaslit that I get up "too late" while I'm rather a night owl. People tried to "fix" my circadian rythm and I had a permanent jet lag and poor health because of that. Thank you! 💖

Is it a myth? I would also like a video about the chronotypes! Used to be a night owl and start living like dr Breuse advised for night owls. I took the test again and now I am categorised as a bear.
