When I got into Lord of the Rings when I was a preteen in sixth grade I was a Nazgul for Halloween. My buddy who knew my parents was into Knights and stuff and he had armor he made from light sheet metal the boots that you see in the movie and they were easily slip onto my legs up to my knee and of course I bought a grim reaper robe which my mom completely put a you can't see in but I can see out cloth over the face so it looked like I had no face and she put a robe cloth over the head to make it look like the movie version and my the black gloves that came with the outfit my friend put pieces of metal to make it look like the gauntlets that you see that they wear in the film. And of course I had a sword it wasn't a ringwraith sword but still it was a sword that did its Duty I remember when I was in complete costume I did the walk with the stance of the Nazgul with the sword in front of me almost statuesque I tried doing the scream and it worked but it did a number on my vocals so I didn't do it as much

I read an article some time back that suggested that the process of physically becoming a ring wraith did not start until the bearer of the rings exceeded their normal lifespan, and at that point they started to fade. Of course, by that time they were probably completely dominated mentally by Sauron, with little will of their own.

That might explain Gollum to some degree. As a Hobbit he had probably exceeded his natural life span and to look at him, you would never guess what his race was. He did wear the ring all the time but it was still able to corrupt him, and even when he lost it, he still kept living. This makes me wonder, when Frodo caught up with Bilbo in Rivendale and saw how much Bilbo had changed, was that really age catching up, or something else? Is that in any way what happened to the nine men who became Ringwraiths? Here's another thought, if the one ring was destroyed without Gollum swan diving into the lava, how long would Gollum have lived afterwards? Would he have gotten to go to the Undying Lands too, or would he have just keeled over once the ring was destroyed?

@@NoFormalTraining Gollum himself expected that "when Precious goes, we'll die, yes, die into dust. Dusst!" Of course, he may have been mistaken; Bilbo did not immediately succumb to the physiological ravages of time as soon as the Ring melted.

On a theoretical basis (from the spiritual perspective specific to Tolkien mythology), the transformation into a Nazgûl (a ring-wraith) can be described as the fading of the human species like the elves. While the elves fade away naturally in Arda, it is the rings of power that make humans do this artificially. In a way, it is a kind of side effect of the rings of power on the human species. Rings of power fade humans while preventing elves from fading. The reason why rings of power have the opposite effect on elves and humans in terms of fading is the relationship of their souls (fëar) with their bodies (hröar), which are structured from the material of Arda (their souls being or not connected to Arda). The rings of power they possess connect the souls of people whose souls are not connected to Arda to Arda, contrary to their nature, and this becomes their spiritual suffering. They find themselves unable to die and unable to leave Arda. This is the idea I developed. The fear spread by the Nazgûl is related to Estel (a kind of hope), one of the basic themes of mythology. Estel deprivation prepares the ground for Melkor's evil will to take effect. Aware of this, Sauron aimed to pacify the Estel feeling in beings through the Nazgûl and activate the will of his lord Melkor, to whom he was affiliated. Further evidence that Sauron derived his power from the inheritance of his lord Melkor (the spiritual power he spread throughout Arda). Gandalf, on the other hand, pacifies this influence of the Nazgûl through Narya and strengthens the will to resist with courage by developing the sense of Estel in beings. This is another theoretical approach I have developed on this subject. The dagger Merry uses is sort of like an anti-Morgul sword. It frees the soul of the ring-wraith, which is forced to be bound to its withered body (against its nature through the ring of power), by separating it from the body to which it is bound, and making it independent of Arda. In this case, whether the freed soul returns to Mandos is a separate speculation. This is my theory on this subject.

It always seemed to me that the Nazgul were failures. Yes, they were terrifying and could really impact the moral of Sauron's enemies. But that terror was drawback since they could only interact with the living world on a limited basis because they were so terrifying. One of the strengths of men was their unpredictability. They were not bound to Arda and their spirits were often restless. Sauron took from the Nazgul the greatest strengths as men. It seems if you look at it, the rings were a disaster for Sauron. The Elves took there's off until he fell at the end of the Second Age, the dwarves could not be subjugated by the rings and for Men the rings created monsters.

I’m not sure of this, but it seems right to me: when the One Ring was finally destroyed, the remaining eight Nazgûl were said to have “crackled and went out.” It’s my belief that at that point, they were finally released from their bondage to Sauron, and able to accept the Gift of Men (mortality) that was given by Illuvatar. I say this because maybe, just maybe, they didn’t start out as evil men. The were tricked by Sauron and became evil extensions of his will over time. So in the end they were finally able to leave the circles of the world, as Illuvatar intended. Not saying they were redeemed or anything such, but to finally be able to be free from the thralldom and have your Fea go where it was supposed to, probably felt like a great relief. I could be wrong, but I only think this because, again, Sauron lied to and tricked them in the beginning.

I'm going to expand on mr.void's comment and say that he's likely right, but has left something out. Sure, you could call them failures, but at least until the time of the Fellowship, they still appeared to be successes, and had the Nazgul seized Frodo, they would have been a success, absent the intervention of the Valar, or Eru. Gandalf implied that his arrogance brought with it a blindness, when he called Sauron a "wise fool", but even to those in on the Fellowship viewed this as the last, desperate chance they had to defeat Sauron. Gandalf included, I might add, at least until after Moria. I can sum it up by saying that when it comes to his plan with the Rings, he was indeed a wise fool, but that'd mean nothing, if I hadn't expounded a bit, first. Besides, it's extra Tolkien-related content, at no extra charge! ;)

You probably wouldn't notice anything peculiar until perhaps you started outliving all of your own generation by many years and subsequent generations started to take note of your slow aging, inability to get sick, recovery from wounds that would kill most, or notice odd things about you such as changes in appearance. Also, you might start to notice that people no longer just exhibited fear in the presence of a tyrant, but seemed to increasingly show a fear that is more primal like they are seeing something supernatural.

Sauron always had time. It didn't matter how many times he got defeated, he would start over. This process is ruthlessly Darwinian. I'd imagine that over time he would find captains and servants, survivors whose strength was above the norm or people who he had influenced and done favours for, who could be used to further his own ends. There is a game, Shadows of War, available now with videos of some of the in-between scenes and fights. About the return of Celebrimbor and the forging of a second Master Ring. Every time someone possessing this Ring defeats a Nazgul, you're given a flashback of his life. How he was manipulated by Sauron, each one made to perform a horrific evil which damned their soul. Living in such a vulnerable condition physically, Sauron would give one of the Nine. The ring would give them power - strength, rage, authority - whatever they wanted! In the accepting and in the using of the ring, they were bound by their own damnation to Sauron. Though they were tricked, they made the decision themselves. They were destroyed by their own hand. As each were destroyed in the game, their last words were 'as my pain ends, yours is just beginning!'

This vid doesn't actually address the title - it is instead about the nature of the Nazgul. The reference to Frodo's near transformation to a wraith is not comparable because the mechanism is completely different. What it SHOULD have done is focus entirely on how the transformation would progress, mentally and physically. Mentally, thought would be increasingly about fascination with Sauron, to the point that the will of Sauron was the only remaining thought. Physically they would increasingly prefer to be invisible as their bodies aged, until eventually their bodies became so withered they could only continue to exist invisibly. However their bodies must have still existed as otherwise the Witch King could not have been stabbed by Elven blades. Unpacking this process in detail over time was what I was hoping to see and didn't get.

I have theory about the Morgul blade that the witch king has. What if the morgul blade was originally owned by Beren and it was the same the dagger that cut the Silmarllion from Melkor crown. Then Melkor in anger takes the broke the dagger for what it did. He then re-forged it to corrupt the dagger and made it into the Morgul blade. Then it was lost in the final battle where he was captured. His second lieutenant Sauron found the Morgul blade and had it, but didn't use it until the second age. He then passed it on to the Witch King. Even at Weathertop Aragorn sings about Beren and Luthien. It only makes sense that the dagger that they use in the story should come back. Continuing that then Frodo is stabbed in the chest by the very blade that Beren once used. Frodo is ultimately healed by the same plant that healed Beren.

I think there is also an element of addiction that has to be addressed here. Don't get me wrong, this was a fantastic video and your points are all very well made. But, like Gollum, I think the Nazgul became addicted to the power of their rings. Otherwise, any sane person would felt themselves slipping away and have thrown them away and said, 'no more of that, thank you!'. Tolkien's ideas of power and responsibility are remarkably complex, especially given his Catholic faith. Yes, you can pity the Nine, but can you forgive them for their deeds? Tolkien lets you work that one out for yourself, as a great author should. ^_^

It would be cool if Gothmog was another Nazgul, but I do not believe that he was. My guess would be the witch king was a Black Numenorean and likely born into or joined at an early age a cult of morgoth/sauron worship. He was noted for his ability, ambition, and lust for power and awarded with a ring of power. I wonder if there was some sort of selection process to be granted a ring. IE Sauron would play two rivals off each other, and they would each go to greater and greater lengths to prove themselves worthy of such a gift from Sauron.

In a way Tolkein wrote long before George Lucas, but Lucas seemed to have had a similar being in his own movies. The Sith in many ways undergo a similar transformation upon becoming an apprentice. The only difference is that Sith while enslaved to the Dark Side of the Force, are not imprisoned by it, but both groups suffer in a similar manner. The Sith "transform" over time and assuming they live long ,become a shell as well. Their skin pales. Their eyes look sunken in, their bodies also become frail. This is due to long exposure to the deteriorating effects of the dark side. While a Jedi serving the light does not endure the deterioration, the Sith do. That implies both groups have a concept of a light side and a dark side. The Nazgul, like the Sith accept the powers and begin to use it, thus "draining" the dark side. It would have to be replenished with waves of constant fear, suffering, and death. And that is what the Nazgul inspire and that might be why they do so. Because without the dark energy that fear and suffering cause, they cannot replenish their power and would possibly wither and die. So like all of Mordor, the entire world of Tolkein rests on the simple balance of light and dark. With both sides eternally fighting for dominance. So it's a need to make the denizens of Middle Earth suffer and be afraid in their dreams. It gives Sauron substance and food to feed upon. The Sith are similar, inspiring fear and dread with their appearance. And like a leech to blood, both groups (Nazgul and Sith) need their enemies to be afraid and in pain. It makes them stronger.

Apparently the Ringwraiths didn’t need to physically possess them, not anymore at least, but Sauron may have felt that he needed to hold their rings to control them now that he no longer possessed the One.

I sometimes wonder what Sauron did with the remaining seven rings for the Dwarves he recovered. He got back three and if fans are right they were basically the same in all regards as the nine, so I wonder if he ever tried to make 3 more Nazgul. Or if Sauron had won and reclaimed the one ring, could the Wytch King either be resurrected in some way, or could his ring still be used to make a replacement? Could he have made even more rings like the 9 and 7 and make even more if possible?

One question I have is did any of the Nazgul know what they would become. Some could be so power hungry that they may have willingly undergone the changes.

Nazgûl have always been my absolute favorite. Witch King is probably one of the greatest villains ever created. But I do have a question… since Nazgûl are not living nor dead, what exactly happened to witch king after being defeated by Eowyn? Technically he was dead to begin with so he couldn’t die…

Why aren't there legions of wraiths that are Morgul blade victims? Does every victim of a Morgul blade injury turn into a wraith themselves? Why is Frodo special? Is it because the breaking of the blade inside the wound is the rare occurrence? Is it that the "turning" happens rapidly without ethelas medicine? Is it that the attack usually kills before the "turning" is complete?

It’s not possible for them to go rogue since their wills are completely bound to Sauron due to the rings. But it could be a cool what-if! Their power and abilities could be used against their old master, but I don’t think their nature of terror could ever be used to do good.

The Nazgûl are indeed pitiable. I wonder, are they released from bondage through the destruction of the one ring? Do their spirits, as men, return to Eru Illúvatar? Do they find peace? I would want them to find peace. I think they have atoned for their sins through their bondage and ages of suffering.
