I love Looney mention about different game engines! Games really do feel so much more varied and interesting when engines they run on are different. With Unreal and Unity even I started to see what limits them. For example how light and loading work, but also mechanics and how character responds to inputs etc.

I understand the dreadful feeling of transitioning from a console experience to a PC experience. I believe there will always be a console experience. Gaming machine manufacturers and PC manufacturers realize that some players throughout the age ranges from very young to old will not want to learn how to tinker with settings. Now, if there is this shift in hardware to this extreme, there will be built-in AI to analyze hardware and with the software configuration it will auto-set graphics settings, audio, etc. Brandon, for the most part, PC gaming is as simple as clicking on an icon and loading the game. It can be hooked to a TV and there is very little difference in overall experience. There can be a little jank at times, but most games run on the default settings. Consoles are going to stay around at a semi-affordable level with little to no hassle. I cost see in increase due to components, but maybe not. Now, I could see consoles going to all digital. PC gamers complained, and game developers didn't care and ended physical games rather quickly. I think it will be slower, but it is coming. Perhaps next-gen or the one after. Many PC gamers wait for deep discounts on games and they come a lot quicker than consoles games. I think that is because there is no physical games, so they have to discount them sooner to make money. I can say that I do not buy games at full price 99% of the time, physically or digitally.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with you on the console/simple market always being around in some form or fashion. I think we’ll likely see more PC features available on console, like having access to your Steam library or GOG library… but I still think you’ll be accessing it through your PlayStation, Xbox, or even some variation of a Steam console… you pretty much already have that with the Steam Deck, it acts as a home console just as much as a switch right? So yeah… I might’ve been dooming and glooming a bit too much lmao

@@UnnecessaryRambling yes the Steam Deck can be docked and outputted to a tv/monitor. If you aren't wanting a PC, you definitely would not want a Steam Deck. They are finicky when it comes to getting games to work properly at times. Lots of plug-ins you can install to make the experience better as well. I get where you are coming from with the whole will quit mentality. For me, it's cellphones. I want to a phone for the purpose of text and calls and the I guess the internet. I have no desire to sideload or jailbreak it. No desire to tinker. I use Apple. It's easy peasy, very straight forward. My work phone is an Android. I have no idea how to use it really. It's frustrates me. Android wants its users to tinker, where Apple does not. Apple products are like game consoles and Androids are like PCs. Androids... the OS always wants to update.. annoying as hell (PC lol). Apple only when necessary (console). I get it man. Single use devices that do it well is all many people merely want. Nothing wrong with hitting the panic button occasionally to keep you on your toes. PCs and consoles will co-exist. They need each other, and consoles are needed to bring the gaming experience to those who just want to play games. The industry can tinker with the prospects of merging consoles into the PC realm, but they will fail if they push it too far.

@@trey631 Exactly why I use Apple as well. I’ll happily take less options, features, less impressive tech, etc. if the trade off is that I have less shit to tinker with lol. There’s only so many hours in the day, I’m not trying to spend any of those hours tinkering with tech if I don’t have to. 🤣

I definitely think some things can improve, but I do agree that gaming is in a really good spot right now. 2023 was legit one of, if not the greatest year of new releases of all time.

I'll probably do multiple comments, as I am forgetful. There is one more big problem with digital games, that I don't think you'll mention. They can change their content after you buy them! Not only what Looney mentioned about taking back what you bought, but changing it. One example is Yakuza game, where they changed one character face and voice actor, because original person did drugs in Japan and that's a huge thing here. They can also take out licenced songs and cars. I know there is more examples of content changes, not fixes, in digital games, that I don't remember now. With physical Yakuza game you can still have that changed actor, although you must block game update 😉.

I'm with you guys. Simplicity is by far more important to me than tiny graphical and gameplay improvements that I would barely notice unless I was already aware of it. And my collection is my showpiece in the games corner of my office, haha. That said, I am considering buying a Steam Deck OLED, as there are a fair number of interesting games on there, that are not on console (or are soon to be released).

I’ve been so close to pulling the trigger on the Steam Deck as well. I have no interest at all in playing the AAA games on Steam Deck, but a few of those indies that skip console each year are almost enough to get me in the door for Steam Deck… but the rumors of Xbox having Steam accessible on their next console is making me hold off

I do think that games are at this point now where its like the movie and music artform. Like most popular music follows the same formulas and most massive budget movies dont take risks and look very simular. Most big games today follow the same formulas, look the same way, written in the same way, and play the same way. I do think that within those big titles you can find some really solid artwork like Last of Us 2 had the same generic formula but atleast the game took massive risks in many areas. Or Elden Ring with its open world but not generic open world exploration. But most of the time you get studios that are just aiming for that 8/10 good ranking. Not to say 8/10 is bad or anything. But at this point its much easier to reach that level of gaming. So its not as interesting. This is probably a hot take but i dont think that the industry needs to be held accountable for these things. The audience needs to be. So many gamers say theirs not enough games, or that the industry is dying or getting boring. Most of the time these people dont want to take any risks in their preference. Instead they just keep playing the same genre, with the same issues and they act surprised that the games are uninspiring.

I don’t think we’re in an awful spot with an overly homogenized industry, but the trends leaning that way are noticeable imo. I do think gamers are starting to reject some of that stuff tho thankfully… Suicide Squad losing 200 million dollars this year is a pretty good example imo of gamers finally voting with their wallet. But your second point is very true as well, there’s so much good stuff out there in the indie & AA space, but the average gamer unfortunately isn’t as open to games in that market as they are for the 50th COD game that’s just like the last 49 lol.

I think there's very little in life at this point that would make me quit gaming. It's interesting you should be talking about this right now because Alex and I were just talking about what would happen if consoles were all digital because I think at that point I'll probably become a PC gamer, but I'll set it up to play on my TV with a controller. Also just find the right wife who is also a gamer and then you don't have to worry about giving up games. Problem solved LOL

I have my gaming PC connected to the same TV as my consoles. I have remote keyboard and mouse and game pad. A lot of times I map keyboard controls to game pad in games that do not have game pad support. When using keyboard controls I have my keyboard on my laps and mouse on sofa arm rest. Although I still find it easier to turn on a console than PC 🤔. It doesn't differ much in time to play after power button press, but with PC I have that thought that I have to update things myself. Also if any update or slight change in some settings brake any of my games I have to fix it myself. I installed SSD's in all my consoles, PS3, PS4 and PS5. I extended storage memory of PSP, Vita and Switch. I got PS4 Pro as soon as I could. I want PS5 Pro also. I like to feel fully prepared. I just must say that with PS5 despite having saved funds to buy I got it TWO years late, because that is when they finally become available in Japan. The West got so much more stock... 😢 Commenting only after watching 10 minutes, before I forget. 🫣

Nice, im really curious about that PS5 pro. I’m wondering when we’ll hear about it officially. It’s obviously in the works, & should release within the next 6-10 months, I would imagine… seems like it’s prolly time to reveal that thing. But I wonder if there’s mass appeal for it, when there’s only a handful of current gen only AAA games as is. Gonna be really interesting. If they can market it as the best place to play GTA6, and they can somehow get R* to go along with that marketing, it’ll do ridiculous sales… I just don’t see R* marketing a PS5pro in anyway lol

@@UnnecessaryRambling I'm thinking maybe they'll announce it at Tokyo Game Show, PlayStation already said they'll be there, and release this fall. I'm trying to save for it in my piggy bank and buy as soon as possible. I always choose fidelity mode over performance in games, so if it gives me more performance on my fidelity modes I'll be happy.
